What's happening around the Club!

Well what a busy February we have had with lot of racing and Celebrating our 30 Years as a Club. Congratulations to all those out there competing and a special mention to those that received  podium positions or PB's.  More details and race results below.

The Committee have been working tirelessly to get 30 year event and our own sprint race done.  If you see the committee members around just give them a pat on the back because they have done a fantastic job in organising and running these 2 major events.  Both of which I think were a great success.

STC CELEBRATES 30 YEARS

Our 30 year celebration night was a well attended night filled with many shared memories of the clubs history, the unveiling of the new honour board to be displayed at the club shed and the induction of two new life members.
We welcomed Steve Ayton and Carole McGregor as life members of the STC. They join Lindsay Hooper, Dave Rabel, Paul Phillips, Pam Pouge, Mike Toll, Tony Moore, Peter Whyte, Peter Guy and Barry Freer.
PRESIDENTS REPORT

February has been a stellar month on our calendar bookended with the celebration of the 30th anniversary of STC and the Cavalier Homes Shepparton Sprint Triathlon.

On the 11th of February members past and present, life-members and long-time supporters of the club gathered at The Connection to celebrate the rich history of the Shepparton Triathlon Club. The evening gave an opportunity for all to catch up and reminisce whilst indulging in first class food and beverages. The new honour board to be erected at the club shed was unveiled recording the history of office bearers, life members and club champions.

Also acknowledged on the evening was the significant place in the Goulburn Valley community the club has forged over 30 years, some statistics were highlighted including that the club has had an estimated 2,250 cumulative members, hosted 21,000 athletes at club, 70.3 and Hexman races and significantly generated in excess of $50,000,000 in economic benefits for the community.

The committee also used the event to induct two new life members. Steve Ayton was recognised with life membership for his contributions to the club over many years including his involvement on both the club and 70.3 committee and years as an office holder of the club. Carol McGregor received life membership in recognition for outstanding athletic career competing in triathlon since 1994 to current with a race record to be envious of. Well done Steve and Carol.

The 2016/2017 triathlon season has seen the return of the Rural Race series with STC hosting the final race of the series with perfect weather conditions on February 26th, followed by the series presentations. Race day kicked off with the juniors racing a course consisting of a pool swim, ride along Tom Collins Drive and run around the Northern end of the lake. It was great to see our juniors racing with gusto and hope to see even more next year.

The seniors race was started with a 750m lake swim, followed by a 2 lap, 20km bike course taking in Tom Collins Drive and the Sheep-Mooroopna causeway before completing a 5km run on an innovative concentric lap of the lake.

The race saw great representation from across the Northern Victorian region with many competitors travelling for the race and to vie for a spot on the podium.

It has been great to see the revival of the rural race series giving triathletes from regional areas access to a genuinely competitive series without having to travel to the city. It has set a solid platform for further growth of the series including the Shepparton race in years to come.

The club had several place getters in both the sprint race and the overall race series, these are detailed in the results section of the newsletter.

Congratulations to all competitors and place getters in both the Sprint Race and the Rural Race Series and thank you to the sponsors, supporters and volunteers whom made race day a success.

Lastly a big thankyou to the committee and their families whom have dedicated countless hours over the past few months to make these two feature events on our calendar happen, thank you.

Trent

CLUB MEMBER
This month we profile husband and wife duo Scott and Wendy McHugh, who are also sponsors of the club and Sprint Race, 'Cavalier Homes'.

PROFILE

Name: Scott McHugh
Nickname: Skizz
Favourite Food: Pizza
Favourite TV Show: Game of Thrones
Achievements: Being successful in business has allowed me to have a good work life balance.
Favourite Race: Echuca as it was the first Race I did and it is a top course.

Name:  Wendy McHugh
Favourite Food:
1st = Ice-cream topped with lots of Milo
2nd = Scott’s spaghetti
3rd = fruit
Favourite TV Show: Anything animals, which I rarely get control of the remote to watch.  However, this year my favourite movie was ‘Eddie the Eagle’, the true story of the English snow ski jumper with an Olympic dream.  I love how the inexperienced Eddie manages to not die on an international sized jump, then exclaims “Right done that!  On to the next one”, and looks up at a jump double the size.  I can relate to that, having only just survived one half ironman here in Shepparton, and then qualifying for the World Champs in Slovakia this June.
Also really enjoyed watching the short locally made (Marcus Cobbledick) documentary film ‘Fairless’, which is about local identity Steve Fairless, former Australian cyclist Olympian making his come back to the sport 20 years later, and qualifying for World Champs in Slovenia a couple of years ago.  If you haven’t already seen this movie, then do yourself a favour.  After watching the movie, then Utube the following years World Champ and watch what Steve did next.  I won’t spoil it, but it involves a Danish sandwich.
Achievements:
1). Starting to finish my weekly coaching programs now (87 days to World Champs…..pressure).
2). Becoming more accustomed to early morning swims, now awake enough to:
  • tease Helen for a bad hair day, and
  • give Sharon tips to consider moisturizing her feet,
  • to steer clear of Laura's bubbles,
  • to make sure I return Chris’ magic refilling tomato container,
  • laugh at Kirsten’s bad idea of fun,
  • mention coffee much to abstaining Jason,
  • sledge soft talking, but tough actioning Fiona.
3). This is a good time to talk about my achievements, because I am currently;
  • winning the Vic Series racing, and
  • coming 3rd in the Gatorade,
  • and after falling off my bike, and overrunning the turn around point at Shepparton to check I wasn’t going the wrong way (again), I came 2nd  in the Shepp Sprint, to place me 2nd overall in the Rural Series this summer.
The summers not over, and anything could yet happen in the Vic Series, and the Gatorade series, so this will be my last interview.  That way if I get wiped off the chart from here on in, it’s a “no comment” from me.
Favourite race: Echuca, because I don’t have to get up early in the morning for this race.  Plus, I get to giggle at all the City swimmers that try to swim upstream against the Murray River current to the start line.
JUNIORS UPDATE

With only a few more weeks of training the juniors have developed some great skills and are progressing in all aspects of triathlons.  Well done to all the juniors who raced in the junior race at Shepparton Sprint.
Training continues every Monday 6pm at the club shed. Mums and Dad's keep your eye of the Facebook page for regular updates of what to bring to training.  FACEBOOK PAGE

TECHNICAL NEWS

Did you know?
Since the revision of the 2016/17 new drafting rules, right around Australia we have seen a big reduction in the number of Penalties issued. For example: Zero penalties at Challenge Shepparton, and 6 only at Ironman 70.3 Geelong. This video has been viewed over 6000 times, so there is still a big audience of triathletes who have not yet seen this useful resource. Please share where possible.

UNIFORM
Uniform will be available at all STC events or alternatively you can
