AIRLINE UPDATES

South African Airways Airbus flies to Victoria Falls:  The new Victoria Falls International Airport welcomed its first large-bodied aircraft ever, on 1st March 2017, when the South African Airways Airbus A330-200 landed (pictured above left).   The aircraft seats 222 people, 88 more than the smaller aircraft it has replaced, and was 95 per cent full on its inaugural flight.  It now flies daily to Victoria Falls from Johannesburg.

Kenya Airways links Nairobi, Victoria Falls and Cape Town: From18th May 2017, Kenya Airways will start direct flights three times a week between Nairobi and Victoria Falls, with an onward link to Cape Town on the airline's existing services.  The flight will operate on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with an Embraer E190 configured with 12 seats in business class and 84 in economy.   The schedule will leave Nairobi at 07.20, arriving in Victoria  Falls at 09.30.  It will then depart Victoria Falls at 10.20, arriving in Cape Town at 13.22.  The return flight will leave Cape Town at 14.15, arriving in Victoria Falls at 17.10.   It will then depart Victoria Falls at 18.00 for arrival in Nairobi at 22.00.

Ethiopian Airlines to fly into Victoria Falls:
Africa’s largest airline, Ethiopian Airlines, will begin four flights a week from Addis Ababa to Victoria Falls, on 26th March 2017, using the latest Boeing 737-800  The flight route will be Addis Ababa – Victoria Falls – Gaborone.

Rainbow Airlines Zimbabwe links Harare with Vic Falls and Johannesburg.    A new Zimbabwean airline, Rainbow Airlines, took to the skies on 25th January with an inaugural once-a-week flight between Harare and Victoria Falls (on Saturdays).  On 5th March the Harare to Johannesburg route will be launched three days a week on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  The airline is using a 50-seater CRJ 100 Bombardier aircraft (pictured above left).

fastjet suspends Victoria Falls-Johannesburg route:  Low-cost airline fastjet has suspended its Johannesburg -Victoria Falls route.  According to the airline's Chief Executive, Nico Bezuidenhout, this move   "forms part of fastjet’s stabilisation plan, which requires a narrowed commercial focus on network points that perform better commercially".    Since fastjet Zimbabwe began operations in October 2015, the airline has flown over 100 000 passengers across the Zimbabwean skies. Currently, it has 32 flights per week to and from Harare-Johannesburg and Harare-Victoria Falls.

NEED AN INDEPENDENT EXPERT TO PLAN YOUR SAFARI?
WE HAVE SOME SUGGESTIONS....

It's all very well checking out the internet for independent and reliable sources of information like WildZambezi.com to get ideas for your safari trip, but making informed choices, knowing what works, putting it all together, and making bookings needs a local expert.    Time is of the essence.  Most people have a limited time period for their holiday, and especially if long-haul flights are involved, you need to be able to slot everything together properly so as to make the most of the precious time that you have.

Here's where your safari planner expert comes in.   Many travellers are reluctant to engage the services of a Safari Planner, thinking that they are going to have to pay a premium for this kind of service.  But wait.... that's not true.  Travel specialists like Safari Planners are provided with their own special rates by the product suppliers, which ensure that the cost to their clients is no higher than if they were to book direct.   Not only will you save endless time and cost, but you get the added benefits of:-
  • independent advice (the best Safari Planners are not affiliated to any particular products, but can advise on everything)
  • informed choices based on the Safari Planner's personal experience
  • first-hand, on-the-ground knowledge
  • years of experience in knowing what works and what doesn't
  • someone to call if you have a problem.
However, it's important that you engage a Safari Planner who really does know what their doing.  There are many well-respected travel companies who have developed safari planning expertise in Southern Africa through years of experience.   If you know one, then you're fine.  But on the whole the best people for the job are those on the ground.

If you are coming to Southern Africa and hoping for an amazing wildlife safari experience with an add-on trip to the famous Victoria Falls or more, you can't do better than the following Independent Safari Planning experts who are part of the Wild Zambezi travel network and come highly recommended:-

GOOD RAINS, BAD ROADS & RISING RIVER/ LAKE LEVELS
Many parts of Zimbabwe have had received very good rains this year, with crops thriving and dams spilling (in some cases for the first time in a decade or so).  While this is good news for farmers, it is not such good news for the travellers using the country's network of roads which, in some cases, have badly deterioriated as a result of flooding.

Wild Zambezi is grateful for updates from various Zimbabwean travellers and residents of Kariba Town.  Self-drivers are warned to be extremely cautious when driving even in urban areas and on main "highways", where large potholes and surface erosion are appearing.  The best advice is to keep speed down and to remain vigilant at all times.

Motorists travelling the Harare-Chirundu-Kariba road should beware of a very broken-up surface which has occurred near the town of Banket, a few km after the pass over the Great Dyke hills. A section of road that has collapsed here, the tar has started peeling off and there are a series of dips that are causing a great deal of damage to traffic.

On the section of road between Makuti and Kariba Town between CHARARA to just past CHAWARA, there are some bad sections.  From Charara to the glitterstone quarry is particularly bad and there are two big potholes at the Nyanyana River bridge on the quarry side of the road (pictured).  There are also a few deep potholes near the Kariba Airport turn off.  Please drive with extreme care!

Meanwhile, the water levels in the Zambezi River and Lake Kariba are rising steadily as inflows from the good rains in the various catchment areas are starting to have an effect.   Here is the comparative hydrological chart from the Zambezi River Authority showing the official measured levels of Lake Kariba for the last 20 years.

A "GOOD NEWS" ANIMAL STORY TO COUNTER THE "FAKE NEWS" MYTHS!
The rescue of 'Mr Bones' the hyena !

The internet is awash with animal welfare rescue stories and particularly if they involve charismatic wild creatures like elephants, or lions, which readily appeal to the public imagination.  However, other, equally needy cases where less immediately appealing wild animals are involved are often ignored by the Media.

We are delighted to report on the successful rescue, rehabilitation and release of a male Spotted Hyena in the Kariba area.  Read the full story at our Blog Link:  The Rescue of Mr Bones, the Hyena.

All credit must go to the the hard-working volunteers of the Kariba Animal Welfare Fund Trust (KAWFT) and the dedicated veterinarians of the AWARE Trust  for this extraordinary (and heartening) story.

Hyenas really do, on the whole, get very bad press (if they get any coverage in the media at all).  One doesn't often see a picture of a "beautiful hyena" posted by the many photographers who show off their creativity on Social Media (except of course if the hyenas are busy tearing apart the remains of a lion kill carcass).  Many people find them "ugly" because of their scavenging habits and their eerie "cackling" and whooping calls.  Their hindquarters are less developed than their powerful necks and forequarters, which gives them a rather ungainly gait.  Traditionally, in African farming areas hyenas are considered pests, and the species has a negative reputation in African folklore, in which they are depicted as greedy, gluttonous, stupid, and foolish, yet powerful and potentially dangerous.  The block-buster Disney film "The Lion King" did little to dispel this image, and in fact has caused much damage to the reputation of the species, in the opinion of those working for its future conservation.

The truth is that hyenas, like vultures, play a vital role in ensuring that the wilderness is kept clean.  They have powerfully-built skulls and jaws specially adapted to crushing bones.  In fact, the jaws of a Spotted Hyena exceed those of the brown bear in bone-crushing ability!  Their digestive systems are adapted to break down all organic components of their prey, including the skin and bone, which is the reason why their dung consists largely of white powder and hair.  There is very little left of a carcass in the wild after the vultures have left and the hyenas have finished it off.

"Fake News", seems an appropriately topical label to apply to the misleading depiction of hyenas as slobbering, cringing, evil creatures.  They are, in fact, true sanitisers of the wild and a vital link in ensuring the health of natural ecosystems.  They deserve better Press!

KIDS' HEAVEN! - THE FISH-BAIT POND AT SPURWING ISLAND

Wild Zambezi so enjoyed this fun-filled image from Spurwing Island Lodge, on Lake Kariba, showing their new natural "live-bait" fish pond during the Zimbabwe Schools' half-term weekend!  What an excellent way to keep the kids (and some of the parents) happy for hours in a totally safe environment !  Well done Spurwing!

This family-friendly safari lodge situated on its own island (when the lake level is high), overlooking the mountains of the Matusadona National Park, is easily accessible with a short boat-transfer from Kariba Town and has long been popular for getaway weekends.  There are lots of fun outdoor things for children of all ages to do at Spurwing, and plenty of green-lawned space for them to do it in.  This, together with the extremely friendly and accommodating staff makes Spurwing a perfect choice for family holidays.

We'd love to hear from children (or their parents) who have enjoyed such activities at Spurwing Island.  Write us a Travel Review on WildZambezi.com HERE.

BUMI HILLS SAFARI LODGE - CLOSED TILL JULY FOR RENOVATIONS

ROBIN POPE SAFARIS ZIMBABWE LAUNCHES IN MANA POOLS WITH JOHN'S CAMP

Robin Pope Safaris has expanded its operations into the Zambezi Valley in  Zimbabwe with a new semi-permanent camp in Mana Pools.

John's Camp is due to open on 14th April and will operate until the close of the safari season on 30th November 2017.  The new camp takes its name from renowned African safari guide, John Stevens, whose daughter Sarah and her husband Milo Harrup will be running the show.  (Previously operating as The Mana Pools Safari Company, their new strategic partnership with Robin Pope Safaris has resulted in the change of name.)  All existing bookings will be honoured at contracted rates, and any new bookings confirmed between January and 14th May 2017 will be offered a special opening discount of 15%.

The new 10-bed tented camp is simple in concept, offering guests an intimate experience, exceptional service, great game viewing and top-notch guides. John Stevens, who joined Zimbabwe National Parks over 50 years ago, and has worked in and around Mana Pools ever since, will be available to guide on request.

Ton de Rooy, MD of Robin Pope Safaris says he is thrilled with the addition of John’s Camp.  " We believe we share the same values and vision and we look forward very much to growing the Robin Pope Safaris footprint in this special part of Africa.”

ANDREW SMITH SAFARIS - GIVING BACK TO THE SAFARI INDUSTRY THROUGH EDUCATION

During the rainy "green season", safaris in Zimbabwe slow down and professional guides like Andrew Smith Safaris at last have some free time to relax and catch up with family and friends.   However, for Andrew Smith and some of the other guides, it hasn't all been down-time.

They have been involved in sharing their knowledge and actively helping future generations to learn and understand the safari industry.   In addition to assisting with the annual Professional Guides exams,  Andrew and other guides have volunteered to help with a number of educational camps and expeditions.

During November, David Langerman and Andrew accompanied a group of fourteen boys from Peterhouse School and their leader, Penny Raynor, to the Bubye Valley Conservancy. The group was there for a week and the boys were given the most incredible experiences. They left with a huge amount of knowledge that will possibly guide them into safari careers or develop their passion for the bush.  Penny`s enthusiasm has inspired Andrew to be more involved with the schools.  In April this year, he will be canoeing down the Zambezi River with Penny and another group of boys.

The boys' enthusiasm has encouraged Andrew Smith Safaris to develop more educational programmes for schools.  Andrew and his wife Clea have been lucky enough to spend some time with a group of boys from St John's Senior School. The support from hunters and guides has been wonderful and the St John`s pupils have been incredibly enthusiastic.  We hope to encourage their curiosity and provide opportunities for them to spend time in the Zambezi Valley.

Although the St John's Safari Club programme is new, some of the boys came on the Kids Camps that are ran through Wilderness Safaris' Ruckomechi Camp and Kavinga Safari Camp. The boys' experiences on the camps have given them the foundations needed for a lifelong love for the bush.  This love has underlined the importance of introducing junior school children into Zimbabwe’s wild areas in the hopes that they will look after them in the future. As a result, Andrews Smith Safaris plans to run a Kids' Camp at Kavinga Camp in the April holidays.

The wilderness has an amazing way of reminding people of all ages about what is truly important in life. One child cannot save the world's wildlife, but a week on a Kids' Camp can promote a passion that will never fade.  It could also inspire emotions that will encourage future generations in Africa to preserve our beautiful wild areas.

If you have enjoyed a learning experience with Andrew Smith Safaris, please submit a Travel Review on their listings page on WildZambezi.com HERE.

SAPI AREA TO BE CONSERVED FOR PHOTOGRAPHIC SAFARIS (NO MORE HUNTING)

Well-known Botswana and Kenya conservation tourism company, Great Plains Conservation, has taken over the lease of Sapi concession, a former hunting concession on the eastern boundary (downstream) of Mana Pools, and part of the World Heritage Site.

The 118 000-hectare area is to be managed exclusively for conservation tourism with a camp set up by the end of the year.  By the time the camp opens, there should have been about two new cycles of wildlife births that won’t know the scourge of hunting, said Hilton Walker, Sales and Marketing Director at Great Plains Conservation, in an interview with Tourism Update.   We also have our eye on an existing property in Victoria Falls National Park.

Walker added that, given Zimbabwe’s financial distress, it was critical for Great Plains and other companies to invest in the destination to ensure that money came in and employment and upliftment were created.  We’re very excited to be in that neck of the woods and make a difference on the ground, he said.

Wild Zambezi looks forward to updating our readers on the future plans for this beautiful area.  For background information, see the description of the area on our website page: Places to Visit:  Sapi.

WILDERNESS SAFARIS STANDS BY IT'S 'DISONNECT TO RECONNECT' POLICY
"It is our firm belief that we should contribute to keeping some areas of the planet wild and remote!"

In October 2015, Wilderness Safaris announced their "Disconnect to Re-connect" Policy.  This divided their network of camps into those that include a Wi-Fi connection and those that are ‘off the grid’ and unequivocally disconnected.   Their reason was simple:  It would allow guests the opportunity to genuinely “get away from it all” and truly enjoy their holiday and the natural space around them.

The results?   It has been a mixed bag, so far, which Wilderness Safaris believe points to the trends themselves being in flux and conflict.  Read their full account, including a list of which of their camps are on or off grid, at this Wild Zambezi Blog link:  Disconnecting on Safari:  Why we do it.

Wilderness Safaris are determined to continue to offer guests the choice.  The idea of disconnecting in order to reconnect has always been a part of Wilderness Safaris’ promise to guests – offering space, intact ecosystems and the opportunity to connect with nature, family and friends and indeed the self....

We regard this as an important part of what we stand for and encourage … in other words, a world where natural ecosystems are valued and appreciated, with some resistance applied to the inexorable advance of man and technology.
”  says Chris Roche, Chief Marketing Officer of Wilderness Safaris.

Ruckomechi Camp and Little Ruckomechi on the Zambezi River in Mana Pools National Park are both "off grid".  Check out their listings page on WildZambezi.com HERE.

If you have enjoyed peace and quiet away from 24-hour "connectivity" with Wilderness Safaris - please tell us about it by submitting a Travel Review on WildZambezi.com HERE.

WILD HORIZONS' - HELPFUL ADVICE FOR CROSSING BORDERS

Victoria Falls tour operators, Wild Horizons,  provide cross-border transfers to and from the resort town and have an experienced representative based at each border post in the area to make going through the border formalities as simple and hassle-free as possible.   However, since the border posts are not under the jurisdiction of Wild Horizons, guests may on occasion experience some of the scenarios laid out below.  Wild Horizons have provided some tips on how best to deal with these:-

ZIMBABWE – BOTSWANA
•    You will be required to present yourself at Immigration
•    Possible queues at Immigration.
•    When crossing from Zimbabwe to Botswana you will change from a Wild Horizons coach to an open 4x4 game viewing vehicle. This will be branded African Odyssey.
•    You may need to walk a short way with your bags to change vehicles.
•    On the Botswana-side you will be required to step on a treated mat for foot and mouth disease control. The foot & mouth control is a regular occurrence and should be advised to guests as a matter of procedure. Please note that you will be required by Port Health at the Botswana border to disinfect your shoes before entering Botswana. With this in mind, we request that you carry ALL your shoes as hand luggage in a separate bag for the border crossing.

ZAMBIA – BOTSWANA
•    You will be required to present yourself at Immigration
•    Possible queues at immigration
•    On the Zambian side of the river, you will be required to walk a short distance from the transfer vehicle to the boat.
•    You will cross the Zambezi River in a speedboat (approximately 5 minutes). The general public and heavy commercial traffic cross the river on state-operated ferries.
•    On the Botswana side of the river, you will be transferred in an open 4x4 game viewing vehicle branded African Odyssey to the Botswana immigration and customs hall. Every passenger is required to present themselves in person to the officials. Again scanning equipment will be encountered, however you may be required to complete manual declaration forms at either border should the computer systems be offline.
With this in mind, we request that you carry ALL your shoes as hand luggage in a separate bag for the border crossing
•    Possible delays due to heavy truck congestion.

HOW YOU CAN HELP
•    Have your passport and visa (or cash for visa) ready. Botswana does not process visas at the border without prior arrangement and they will only accept Botswana Pula (BWP) as payment
•    The best currency to carry is US Dollars
•    Have some water and reading material nearby
•    Keep and eye on your belongings as this border is a busy one with a lot of foot traffic
•    When entering Botswana, we request that you carry ALL your shoes as hand luggage in a separate bag for the border crossing for foot & mouth disease control.

If you have crossed one of these borders with the help of the Wild Horizons team, please tell us about the experience by submitting a Travel Review on WildZambezi.com HERE.
