WAQA March QNEWS

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT

Hi <<First Name>>,

Our featured sponsor this month is Austech Welders and Sewing Machines.

Austech Welders and Sewing Machines group was started by Greg Schmidt in 2008 to service the Industrial sewing machine and Plastic welding machine industry. Yes, we sell Plastic welding machines. This causes some confusion, but is a very logical extension of the industrial sewing machine component of the company. Plastic welding machines are used for the manufacture of everything from truck tarps, side curtains, café blinds, shade sails, swimming pool covers and liners, water tanks and liners to grain bunker covers and are used in many industries that deal in flexible and rigid plastics.

Greg has been in the industrial sewing machine industry since 1989 when he started an industrial sewing machine apprenticeship in a clothing factory in Queensland. Since that time, he has worked in all aspects of the domestic and industrial industry. This includes sales and service of Industrial embroidery machines, Quilting machines, domestic sewing machines and fully automated sewing machines. We service all brands and types of sewing machines and associated equipment. We sell a full range of sewing machines (domestic and industrial), fabrics and accessories.

In 2015 Austech Sewing Machines was appointed the Western Australian distributor for the Nolting and Grace brands of quilting machines, frames and accessories. With this appointment Austech Sewing machines employed Sue Chalcraft. Sue has extensive knowledge in the domestic sewing and quilting fields and having run her own Quilting and craft shop for many years was a perfect fit for the expansion of Austech Sewing Machines. With the employment of Sue, Austech was appointed as an official Janome dealer and gained accreditation to sell all models in the Janome range.

In 2016 Austech Sewing Machines was appointed as an official dealer for Baby lock overlockers and gained accreditation to sell the full range of no threading overlockers and accessories.

Austech Sewing Machines are very proud to become a member and sponsors of the Western Australian Quilters Association and look forward to seeing members at our shop in Kelmscott.

Due to the exceptional response, we have had from our customers, Austech Sewing machines is moving to larger premises. The new shop will have a much larger showroom and classrooms and will allow us to expand the range of products we sell. We will advise when the new premises are ready and invite all WAQA members to visit and take advantage of the specials we will be running for the opening week.

We look forward to seeing you.

From GWEN AND LESLEY
Everyone enjoyed having Espresso On the Go at sewing day. Who doesn't like excellent coffee?

SCISSOR SHARPENING at SEWING DAY
As mentioned last month, we will have a scissor sharpener man at sewing day. Whilst we don't expect him to be able to complete all required sharpening during the time he is there, the remainder will be returned at April meetings.

If you wish to have scissors or knives sharpened, you will need to place the item(s) into a sealable bag with $5 per item and your name and phone number clearly marked.  This is a very reasonable price and, as this is his hobby, Brian wishes to do a good job, so doesn't wish to be pressured for completion on the day...However, if you come from far away or will not be in attendance during April, please mention this and he will prioritise for you.

As sewing night is again before sewing day, Lesley Warren will collect items and pass them on for sharpening for evening members.

Your Association needs you!!!
Many opportunities for you to join the management of the Association will be coming up this year. Now is the perfect time to learn about a job or to shadow the present encumbent to better understand a position.
WAQA will need the following positions filled before October at the AGM:
President and Vice-President - fabulous opportunity for a couple of friends to work together. It served us well with Sheila and Phil and Gwen and Lesley. Why not you and a friend?

Workshop Convenor
Website Author
Pop Up Coordinator
QNews Editor
PR and Marketing Coordinator

If you are interested in any of these positions don't hesitate to ask us about them, or talk to the person who has the job.
Small Groups with Tiiu
Thank you to several groups who have welcomed new ladies into their group. I hope everyone is settling in nicely.

I am still struggling to place ladies in the Wembley area, so I am happy to assist with establishing a new group. Please contact me via email if you are interested in this possibility.

Let me know if your group has new contact details or a new leader. It helps when I'm trying to find groups for new people.

Dear Quilters,

I have had a very cruisey couple of months since Christmas. I even went on a holiday! What is going on? No applications for workshops means some workshops will not be going ahead.

Have I worked you all too hard? Are there too many options? Do you not like the options? Please give me your answers.

At this stage there are not enough applications for the upcoming workshops with Carolyn Konig who is coming in May to teach and judge Quiltwest. With just a couple more applications we can have at least 2 of these workshops go ahead, and Carolyn has been very accommodating with numbers so we can take quite a few more people. It will be a very big shame for the few who booked to miss out on these workshops, and very inspiring for many more if you decide to take this opportunity to do one of her workshops.

I know these workshops are expensive. That is because we have to pay for airfares and accommodation, and sometimes the interstate tutors charge higher fees than we usually pay our own tutors. However, I have especially chosen tutors who are very skilled and experienced, in fact specialists in their field. You will receive the best tuition, even if you already know how to hand piece or applique, I expect you will still learn something you didn’t already know. That is how it is with workshops. You learn the most amazing tips and tricks that you never thought could help you. Besides that, you usually have the most amazing time with fellow quilters learning amazing techniques.

Carolyn’s hand piecing workshop is not just for the traditional quilters though. If you are at all likely to piece or decorate some of your work by hand at any stage, this will benefit you greatly, as will the appliqué class. There is nothing better than learning from the expert in the field, and I reckon she will have some amazing stories with which to entertain you in regard to how the appliqué sample runner came about.

Please think about booking in to one of Carolyn’s workshops in the very near future. I will have to cancel by the end of the month to save unnecessary airfare charges if there are not sufficient bookings to make these workshops viable.

Thank you for considering and ever hopeful to see you at a workshop soon.

Kerry Moore.

PS. Don’t forget we also have the Accessories workshop coming up on April 2nd. There are still places for this one too.

Check your Quilters Quarterly or the website for the details, or call me to talk about them.

Thank You Thank You Thank You

A wonderful band of WAQA members turned up at APCH on Sunday 26 February for the Community Quilt Bee.  For those of you who weren’t there, the day was hot, humid and very sticky.  As most of you are aware there is no air-conditioning at APCH.

An enormous, loud thank you to those ladies who laboured under these adverse conditions to sew borders, binding and backing and to sandwich quilts.  A special thank you to Liz Houghton for running the bee; and to Cathy Robertson for managing the pinning tables.  Everyone worked so well that we ran out of pins to complete all the quilts that were prepared!  Congratulations to the door prize winners.

Every effort by members, no matter how large or how small, makes a difference to the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves.  We receive many lovely thank you cards and letters from recipients and these will be displayed at the April sewing day/night for members to read.

Once again grateful thanks for your efforts.
