Hello, we've missed you!

We hope this e-mail finds you taking good care of yourselves and your families! There is a lot to keep up with these days, and we are working hard to ensure you have access to the resources you need to help best support & understand your LGBTQIA loved one.
We are so excited to share some updates with you in the land of My Kid Is Gay!

Our Site Is Mobile Ready!

We were able to start the new year off with a much-needed update to our site: you can now access our work on your phone or tablet! This means many more families and educators will be able to access the resources they need. Hooray!

This update (and a few additional updates headed your way soon!) would not have been possible without your donations, so thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for that support.

My Kid Is Gay accepts tax-deductible donations through our fiscal sponsor, Fractured Atlas, and monthly pledges on our Patreon page!

Activist Highlight: Staceyann Chin and Her Daughter Zuri!

Staceyann Chin is a queer activist and poet, who teaches her young daughter Zuri valuable life lessons about equality through filming Living Room Protests for their YouTube channel. Lately, Staceyann and Zuri have been talking about the unjust actions of our current president and his administration, beautifully modeling for parents everywhere about how to discuss current events to their children: by linking them to broader ideas like fairness and kindness.

The White House Rescinds Protections for Trans Youth

As many of you have seen, last week the White House rescinded protections for trans youth in school, including a protection that allowed trans youth to use the bathroom that aligns with their gender identity. We, like you, are devastated by this news, but want to also ensure you that we will be working even harder in our fight for the protection of transgender students.

As a parent or care-giver of an LGBTQIA person, you may be feeling a mix of fear, anger, worry, and uncertainty right now. We want to share an excerpt from a longer piece by Lambda Legal with you here to bring some clarity to the situation:

"The removal of the Obama guidance does not change federal law -- a school cannot legally exclude, separate, deny benefits to, or otherwise treat transgender students differently than their non-transgender peers. Put simply, schools must treat transgender students consistent with their gender identity. What the Obama Administration guidance did was explain to schools their legal responsibilities to comply with existing law and protect transgender students. Just because the explanation was removed doesn’t change the underlying law that protects transgender students from discrimination, bullying and harassment.

Federal law still protects transgender students. Period."

We encourage you to read the full piece here.

Progress from The Boy Scouts!

Good news! The Boy Scouts of America recently made progress towards equality by officially allowing trans boys into its groups. This decision follows behind The Girl Scouts welcoming trans girls into its groups several years prior. We are very proud that prominent, nationally-known organizations are taking a stand to protect, include, and advocate for trans youth.

Our Coming Out With Care package, released last October, includes lots of great self-care tools for you: a music playlist by Brittani Nichols, guided journaling and coloring pages created by Cameron Glavin, and lists to resources and advice.
You can sign up for one (for free!) here.
We have so many exciting things heading your way, so stay tuned! As always, send us your questions so we can answer them!
