President's Message

Some Thoughts from our President, Pearl Ly

Head shot, Pearl Ly, Skyline College, CARL President 2017

Greetings CARL Members,
It an honor to serve as 2017 CARL President to represent your interests this year. I look forward to working with the CARL leadership to support the interest groups in planning workshops and programs, publish newsletters that keep you connected with CARL members, and planning the next CARL Conference in 2018.
This year marks my 10th year of involvement in CARL starting as a library school attendee at SCILWorks, the annual workshop by the Southern California Instruction Librarians (SCIL) CARL Interest Group. CARL has provided me with incomparable opportunities for professional growth and learning, venues to disseminate research, and to build relationships with colleagues throughout the state. I gained skills in project management, organization, and in teamwork through organizing events and serving on the CARL Executive Board that has helped me in my professional career. I hope that you take advantage of all CARL has to offer, connect with passionate librarians, grow your skill set, and that you help shape our professional organization.

Did you know CARL’s purpose?
California Academic and Research Libraries (CARL), a state chapter of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), provides opportunities for the professional growth of its members by:

  • Conducting workshops and arranging programs.
  • Encouraging the exchange of ideas and information relating to library cooperation and development.
  • Disseminating educational information oriented to those working in academic and research libraries.
  • Supporting and, when appropriate, participating in programs of other regional and local organizations in California in order to promote and improve library service to the academic and research community.
How can you get involved with CARL?
  • Interest Groups: I encourage all CARL members to get involved with one of the many existing CARL interest groups (IG’s) or start your own. It is free to join any IG with your CARL membership. The IG’s put on fantastic in-person and online programs and workshops.
  • Committees: Watch CARL-ALL for calls for CARL Standing Committees when new members are needed
  • Awards: Apply for or nominate someone for a CARL award (CARL/ACRL Conference Scholarship, Outstanding Member Award, Research Grant Award, or CARL Member of the Quarter Award)
  • Mentoring: Apply for a mentor or serve as a mentor through the CARL Mentoring Program
  • Leadership: Run for a leadership role through an Interest Group, apply for open appointed board positions, or run for an elected board role.

If you are interested in getting more involved with CARL, please do not hesitate to contact me (lype@smccd.edu). I want CARL to continue having a strong impact on academic librarians in the colleges and universities in California.

Pearl Ly, Skyline College, CARL President

Irene F. Rockman CARL/ACRL Conference Scholarship

photo Essraa NawarPlease join me in congratulating this year’s Ilene F. Rockman CARL/ACRL Conference Scholarship recipient, Essraa Nawar. Ms. Nawar shows great promise in academic librarianship through her work both inside and outside of the library. In addition to her work as Coordinator of Library Development and Marketing at Chapman’s Leatherby Library, she is also active in creating an “atmosphere of awareness regarding ethnic, gender, and religious diversity across her campus through hosting events, exhibits and activities.”  Ms. Nawar’s diverse academic and professional background are critical skills for a 21st-century global academic librarian and the reason why she is our choice for this year’s Ilene F. Rockman Award. Congratulations Ms. Nawar and to all of this year’s applicants. You are all academic librarian superstars!

Lucy Bellamy
2017 Ilene F. Rockman Award Committee Chair

ALIGN

ALIGN hosted its second program, on the correlation and complementarity between service learning and information literacy, in a half-day workshop at Santa Clara University on Friday, 18 November. Entitled “Connecting Pedagogies: Accelerating Impact with Service-Learning and Information Literacy,” the workshop was presented by SCU University Librarian Jennifer Nutefall and American University’s Associate Director for Instruction and Research Services Alex Hodges, editor and chapter author (respectively) of the recently published Service Learning, Information Literacy, and Libraries. The workshop was well-attended by librarians from across the greater Bay Area and, after introductions from ALIGN acting chair Ken Lyons, the presenters began the first half of the session with how they each became involved in service learning projects. Going on to define both service learning and information literacy pedagogies, and comparing and contrasting the development of each, they then demonstrated the connection between IL and service learning core concepts. Examination and discussion of these concepts followed, in light of ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, paying specific attention to two of the IL frames: Research as Inquiry and Searching as Strategic Exploration. The second half was taken up with discussion focusing on service learning and information literacy in practice, with attendees participating in an exercise in which they redesigned a course assignment to better help students achieve IL and service learning outcomes. The workshop was followed by a short walk from the sparkling SCU campus to lunch at Wrap This Mediterranean Cuisine, after which the remaining attendees were treated to a personal tour of the SCU Library’s Special Collections. Many thanks are due the presenters and SCU staff for their logistical support, warm welcome, and hospitality throughout the day. ALIGN is now sixty-two members strong and growing—10% since December. Stay tuned!
