March is Sustainability Month in West Colfax
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
West Colfax has been a part of the Sustainable Neighborhood Network (SNN) since 2014, earning Outstanding Sustainable Neighborhood status every year since! Through this program, WeCAN has provided a variety of volunteer opportunities, workshops and events in the neighborhood to bring neighbors together to support sustainability practices. Some highlights of the West Colfax SNN:
- The WeCAN Running Club has been meeting since September 2016, with 50+ runners participating for close to 1,000 miles run so far!
- WeCAN has partnered with Extreme Community Makeover (ECM) and Confluence Ministries since 2012 for West Colfax Clean-up Days, bringing over 150 neighbors together to clean up alleys, help senior and disabled neighbors with yard projects, and readying the community garden.
- WeCAN has also partnered with The Parks People and Denver Digs Trees to help bring more trees to the West Colfax neighborhood; canvassing the neighborhood for yards in need of trees, and helping to distribute and plant trees to help beautify the neighborhood.
Have ideas on how to support or want to help WeCAN with its SNN efforts? Please join us at our March 14th General Membership Meeting to learn more about the SSN and how you can get involved in these and other sustainability projects in West Colfax. Please contact Josh@wecandenver.org to get involved with the SNN if you’re unable to make it to the March meeting.
Kind Regards,
Nadia Hafeez Patrick & Leah Rounds

At the Next WeCAN General Membership Meeting – March 14, 2017
Along with the Sustainable Neighborhood Network Celebration, Denver Urban Gardens will be at our March 14th General Membership Meeting for a Master Composter Presentation. The Master Composter Program is a ten-session course training individuals to be Master Composters and, in turn, equipping participants to share their newly acquired knowledge with others in the community. Through hands-on sessions, Master Composter Program participants learn about a broad range of compost and recycling topics, including resource conservation and the effective use of recycled household materials in gardens and home landscapes. Join us on March 14 to learn more about the program and how you can become a Master Composter.
Additional information will be available about the Denver Digs Trees program and the West Colfax Food Co-op at our General Membership Meeting; look for more more information on these programs in the Mid-March Newsletter. And as always, WeCAN will highlight neighborhood events and Community Resource Officer Bob Anderson of Denver Police District 1 will share crime statistics and answer your questions and concerns.

What uses would you like to see at Mile High Vista?
In 2011, the Urban Land Conservancy (ULC), sole member of the Avondale Commons, LLC (also known as Mile High Vista), purchased the 2.16 acre site located at 3200/3290 W. Colfax and 1400 Irving. The proposed plan for the site was as a mixed use development to be comprised of three structures: (1) Multi-family affordable housing; (2) Community Need – Library; and (3) Commercial Use (possible Non-Profit mixed w/market rate). Of the three proposed structures, the housing and library are constructed and are in use. The housing includes 80 units of affordable apartments with 19,000 square feet of commercial/non-profit space. The second structure is the home of the 28,000 square-foot Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales Branch Library, part of the Denver Public Library system. The remaining, undeveloped parcel on the site is approximately 19,000 square-feet. For this portion of the site, we are seeking to find the most appropriate uses through community engagement and the results of a market study. Your feedback is crucial to guide decisions concerning the future uses of this remaining undeveloped parcel.
What commercial or non-profit space would you like to see at this location?
Take the quick online survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MileHighVista, open until March 13th. Or attend one of the public meetings March 4th or March 8th, more information on the flyer.

Community Open House on Slot Homes - March 8
Join Community Planning and Development planners for a community open house to discuss the forthcoming Denver Zoning Code text amendment on "slot homes" in Denver. You are invited to learn about the process and share your thoughts as problems associated with slot home development are identified.
Wednesday, March 8 - 5:30-7:30 p.m
Scheitler Recreation Center
5031 W. 46th Ave. Denver CO
About Slot Homes: Community Planning and Development has been conducting city-wide research, analysis and public outreach to identify the problem more clearly, explore alternatives and identify tools to promote improved design outcomes for "slot homes." These efforts will result in a text amendment to the Denver Zoning code in spring of 2018.
A slot home is a multi-unit residential structure consisting of attached dwelling units arranged side-by-side and primarily perpendicular to the street. Most dwelling units have an individual, direct entrance to the exterior facing a side lot line or center pedestrian court. Individual vehicular garages are generally located beneath each unit.
For more information on the project, questions or comments, contact Senior City Planner Analiese Hock, analiese.hock@denvergov.org. Visit the project website.
