CFP: Medieval States of Insecurity (4–7 January 2018, New York City)
Paper proposals are being accepted for for a proposed session on Medieval States of Insecurity cosponsored by the Medieval Iberian Literature and Culture LLC and the Arabic Forum to be held at 2018 MLA Annual Convention in New York City, 4–7 January 2018.
We welcome proposals that explore how insecurity—political and social, real or imagined—affected the ways in which authors depicted the Arab Mediterranean (with possible foci on Iberia, North Africa,
Sicily and their connection). The medieval Mediterranean was a site of contested identities, faith traditions and linguistic registers, as well as of political rivalries between various kingdoms, emirates and caliphates. Papers exploring Arabic literary production are welcome, as are comparative studies of Arabic and the Romance vernacular traditions.
