Ash Wednesday Prayer

God our Father,
You formed us from the dust of the earth and brought us to new life in Christ
through the waters of Baptism.  We ask you to change our hearts as we journey through these forty days of Lent.  Help us to see Jesus in everyone we meet, and to serve him in all persons, especially the poor, the sick and the lonely.  By your grace, may our prayers and sacrifices this Lent, help us grow closer to each other and to you, as one family in Jesus.
We make this prayer to you in His name.
Amen

Dear Parents and Carers

Thank you to community members who attended the Ash Wednesday Mass yesterday. Ash Wednesday begins our forty-day season of Lent that leads to Easter. On Ash Wednesday, we come together like the people of the Old Testament to remind ourselves that we don’t always follow God’s ways and need to ask God for His mercy and forgiveness. Like God’s people in the time of the prophets, we wear ashes to show that we want to turn away from whatever keeps us from God, and to have a change of heart, so that we can live in right relationship with God and each other.

On Ash Wednesday, the priest or person giving out ashes rubs them on our forehead in the shape of a cross while saying:
“Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel”

For Catholics, Ash Wednesday is also a day of fasting and abstaining from meat. Fasting reminds us that food alone cannot make us happy. We must also be fed with prayer, with God’s Word and by meeting Jesus in the Sacraments, especially Reconciliation and Eucharist. The small sacrifices we make during Lent make room in our hearts to welcome the risen Jesus at Easter. (Adapted from http://www.ourlanguageourstory.org)

Last week we shared the recently released Australian Government resource that has been developed to assist parents to support their child’s learning at home. This can be found on the following link:

Kindy interviews for 2018 will commence in Week 7 this term.  If you have a child who is due to begin Kindy in 2018, please ensure your application has been received by the school office.  There are limited places remaining for next year.

As a result of parent interest, OSHClub will be trialing holiday programs and will operate for the Term 1 and Term 2 holiday periods onsite at St Anthony’s School.  There will also be the opportunity to utilise the service for staff professional development days when the school is closed.  This opportunity can only be provided if minimum numbers are reached.  OSHClub has also been an excellent provider of before school and after school care and operates from 6.30am to 9.00am and from 2.40pm to 6.00pm for parents who need to get students to school prior to 8.10am and collect students after 3.10pm.  School supervision ends at 3.10pm and at this time, any students who remain at the pick-up areas are taken to the school office, where parents or carers can collect and sign them out. Please note that students who are collected at the office need to be signed out by a parent or carer.  Siblings of students are not able to sign them out.

Our Annual Grandparents’ Morning Tea and Mass is coming up on Friday March 17.  Please save the date and start informing grandparents and grandparent figures.

Please join us for the Merit assembly tomorrow morning in the undercover area at 8.40am.  All are welcome to attend.

Best wishes and God bless

EARLY YEARS AT ST ANTHONY'S SCHOOL
We believe that children need to be in a learning environment that promotes their holistic development: cognitively, spiritually, socially, emotionally, physically and morally. Every child is unique and will develop and meet milestones at different rates. Children need to be provided with opportunities that enable them to reach their full potential and foster a life-long love of learning.

Travelling Home From School
We are currently reviewing the relevance of our procedures in regard to walking students to buses / to cross over to the council building, at the end of school days.

The current procedures include:
  • walking students to cross Servite Terrace from the Church to the council so they can proceed east on Dundebar Road to walk home or catch a bus.
  • walking students west on Dundebar Road to cross Wanneroo Road at the controlled pedestrian crossing at the traffic lights.

If your child is not collected from school in the afternoons, please click on the survey link below so we can collate data to review our procedures.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND FAITH NEWS
Ash Wednesday
The Prophet Joel and the Gospel of Matthew spoke to us in yesterday’s Ash Wednesday Mass  about repentance, reconciliation, fasting, prayer and almsgiving. This call takes us to the heart of the penitential season of Lent: a conversion of heart that comes from a renewed and revitalised relationship with our God who is gracious and merciful and bestows abundant life on all.
A pure heart create for me, O God, put a steadfast spirit within me.

Yesterday our Year 3-6 attended Ash Wednesday Mass and all children in Kindy-Year 2 had a liturgy to receive their Ashes. Thank you to Fr John for organising the Mass for our school children.
As Christians we know that we are called to live life to the full. During Lent, this ‘joyful season’, we are called to give expression to the ‘greatest commandment of the law’, the love of God and the love of one’s neighbour which is at the heart of Project Compassion. This Lent, after the ash is washed away and we move through this journey to Easter, let us hold in our prayers the oppressed, the hungry, the brokenhearted, the captive, the prisoner. Can we fast so that others may have more of the world’s resources? In a time ‘when the divide between the mega-rich and the forgotten poor is ever widening’, may we bring the good news to those most deeply affected by the inequities in our world — with your Project Compassion box give generously to some of our neighbours who are amongst the poorest and most vulnerable people in our world like Dinia in the Philippines. Poverty is widespread in the Philippines, with more than a third of the people living below the poverty line of AU$1.66 a day. Around 10 million of the poorest people are women. Poverty is the most severe in rural areas, with almost 80 per cent of the country’s most vulnerable people living there. In her village in the Philippines, Dinia is a strong force. Active in her local People’s Organisation, she also shares her farming and natural healing skills. Her strength comes from her own journey of healing, which began in shock and despair. Her husband died suddenly when she was pregnant with her fifth child.

Sacramental Commitment Masses - Sacramental Commitment Masses will be held at all Parish Masses on the weekend of March 11th and 12th. Please make sure you and your child attend one of the masses to be eligible to make the Sacraments this year.

Be A Hero Fundraiser - The Year 6 Leaders will help the St Vincent de Paul Society through organising a fundraising day on Wednesday 15th March called “Be a Hero Day”, where all children in the school for a gold coin donation will be able to dress up as their favourite Super-Hero.
Grandparents’ Mass - On Friday 17th March there will be a special event to celebrate the importance of Grandparents and Grandparent figures in our lives. The special morning will begin with a Whole School Mass dedicated to Grandparents. All grandparents are invited to this Mass, commencing at 9.00am at the Church. Following Mass, the Grandparents will be able to visit their Grandchildrens’ classrooms and have morning tea.

All families are asked to bring in a plate for this morning tea, to be dropped into the staff room before school.

 God Bless

CURRICULUM
Reading Aloud to Your Child: The Research
  • Children read to more frequently at age 4-5 achieve higher scores on NAPLAN tests for both Reading and Numeracy in Year 3.
  • Reading to children at age 4-5 every day has a significant positive effect on their reading skills and thinking skills later in life.
  • Reading to children 3-5 days per week (compared to 2 or less) has the same effect on the child’s reading skills at age 4-5 as being six months older.
  • Reading to them 6-7 days per week has the same effect as being almost 12 months older.
  • These differences in reading and thinking skills are not related to the family’s background or home environment, but are the direct result of how frequently they have been read to prior to starting school.

PRE PRIMARY CLASS NEWS
Pre Primary has had a smooth start to the school year with the students transitioning well with the five day week.

As part of our family theme - which integrates our History and Religious Education programs - the children are learning about many different cultures. Some of their learning experiences have included:  looking at national costumes, Aboriginal dot painting, Croatian embroidery, Indian elephant collage and drawing and writing about what families like to do together. Cooking has also been a popular cultural activity with Italian icecream being a firm favourite!

The students are also participating in playful learning experiences during their literacy and numeracy rotations and are beginning to work with a partner for problem solving activities.

Well done Pre Primaries on a great start to full time schooling!
YEAR 1 RE NEWS
We celebrated Ash Wednesday in Year One with a Liturgy. Mrs Johnston put the ashes on our foreheads.

What is Ash Wednesday?
Chloe: Ash Wednesday is about Jesus making us out of ashes and the ashes is like dust.
Byron: It means love.
Thomas V: It is the start of Lent.
Lola: It is about praying to Jesus.
HEALTH and PHYS-ED
Swim Club - The Interschool Swimming Carnival is on Thursday 27th March and there will be no training on this day. The last club session will be the following week on Thursday 30th March.  Year 5 students have In-term swimming lessons but I encourage them to keep attending club sessions in preparation for the Carnival.  Time trials will be held in the next two weeks as a lead up to the carnival.  Any Swimmers who would like to be considered to take part in the Inter School Carnival who are not Swim club members need to attend two sessions of the club. Please let me know.
In Term Swimming - Years 5 and Year 1 have In term swimming lessons this term in weeks seven and eight, Monday 13th March to Friday 24th March. Year 5 students taking part in the Inter School Carnival will miss one session and will need to remind their swimming teachers.
Running Club - We had 35 runners from Pre Primary to Year 6, on Tuesday afternoon at running club where we focussed on running longer distances.
Anyone is welcome to come along and join the fun- parents included!
Surf Program - This week the Year 6 attend Trigg beach for their second surf / beach safety program. If for some reason your child cannot go in the water please ensure they have permission to come on the bus and learn about water safety at the beach.
Table Tennis - Do we have any talented table tennis players in our community? I was surprised at how few of our students had played table tennis outside of school and am keen to give students the opportunity to play. In term three we have a Spring Carnival which will include table tennis as one of the sports for Years 5 and 6.  If you can help, please let me know.
Nick Corrigan Soccer - Nick has changed the format of his after school soccer sessions so that students of different ages all attend at the same time. Leaflets were sent home which give students the opportunity for a free session on Wednesdays after school.  The sessions are great fun and the children really improve their kicking skills.
HELP - I would really love to have some volunteers to give the gym mats and boxes a wash over and clean. This could be done on a Monday or Thursday afternoon from 1.15pm. Equipment provided!
Gardens – do we have any keen gardeners who would like to assist in setting up some raised garden beds for the classes? Maybe even work with groups of students to plant, raise seeds or set up a compost system? Would love to hear from you!!!
Sun Smart - About skin cancer:  Skin cancer can grow when the cells that make up our skin are damaged causing them to grow abnormally.  Each time skin is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, changes take place in the structure and function of our skin cells. Over time, the skin can become permanently damaged and the damage will worsen with each exposure.  Every additional decade of overexposure to UV further increases your risk of skin cancer. Increased use of sun protection against sun exposure will help prevent skin cancer at any age. By reducing recreational sun exposure at any age, the risk of melanoma will also be reduced.  All skin types can be damaged by exposure to UV radiation. People with skin types that are less likely to burn can still receive enough UV exposure to risk developing skin cancer.  The best way to protect your skin is to remember to Slip, Slop, Slap, Slide and stay in the shade!
Drink lots of water too!

OSH CLUB
This term is going so fast. The children are now settled back into the OSHClub routine and are having so much fun being creative, engaging in group activities, sharing positive interactions and exploring the world around them.
The children have been the nice weather and engaging in lots of outdoor play. The children have been participating in group games such as Basketball, Netball, Tennis and Cricket. The children have been using their turn taking skills and showing great sportsmanship when playing within these games. Some of the children have also been using their imaginations whist in the sandpit area. The children had worked in small groups to build mini villages and lakes using different materials.

Inside the children have been enjoying the iron on beading. This activity allows the children to use hand and eye coordination to place little coloured beads on a plastic template, creating some awesome patterns. The plastic templates are all different sizes and shapes. Once the children have filled the entire template with their coloured beads the Educators then iron them which allows them to stick together and stay within the shape of the template.
The children have also been enjoying the dinosaur space that we have in the room. We are trying to make it more exciting by gathering more materials for this area. If you have anything that you feel would suit this type of area feel free to bring it down to OSHClub. We are looking for things like wood, fake plants, maybe even tyres to place in this area.

Reminder that bookings are now open for the upcoming April Holiday Program that we will be running her within the school. The brochure of the Holiday Program will be up online by the 10th of March. If you have any questions in regards to the Holiday Program please come down and see us or give us a call.

As our numbers have increased, it is essential for parents to be using the online booking system. It would be wise to try and book in ahead to secure your bookings. Due to the high numbers we cannot always guarantee on the day bookings. Remember to set up an online enrolment and to do your bookings go to www.oshclub.com.au

Reminder to all our OSHClub parents if your child is unwell or won't be attending OSHClub for any reason and they have been booked in, please remember to call or text the OSHClub number to advise us of their non-attendance. This is very important so we are not looking for a child who is not attending for the session. Make sure your contacts are updated regularly and we are notified if someone else will be collecting your child. It is important for us to have the correct information to uphold our strict collections procedure and for the safety of your child.

Our OSHClub Program runs a before and after school program here within the school. We are located in the Year 1-3 block in the common area. Our main gate to access in and out of the service is the one closest to this block located in the Church/Staff car park.

Hours of operation are 6.30am to 9.00am and then from 2.40pm to 6.00pm. We provide breakfast until 8.00am, which consists of a variety of low sugar cereal and wholemeal/white toast with spreads. We also provide fresh fruit and a healthy snack for afternoon tea. We offer a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities which include things like art and craft, cooking, role-play activities, group outdoor games and much more.

Kind Regards
Tina and Shanyce
