We Stand United Against Hate and Violence

Horrified by Monday's bomb threat against the Stroum Jewish Community Center on Mercer Island and the anti-Semitic and racist graffiti found in Ballard, I am deeply concerned that members of our community are increasingly becoming the targets of discrimination and hatred.

As a community, we need to take care of one another as much as we can. Please take note of the resources below and take action if you witness or experience acts of discrimination or bias-related crime:
  • Report discriminatory harassment in housing, employment, or public places to Seattle Office for Civil Rights by calling 206-233-7100;
  • Report physical violence, property damage, threats or any type of bias-related crime directly to the police by calling 9-1-1;
  • Visit the Seattle Police Department’s Bias/Hate Crime Data Dashboard.
Seattle will not be a place where children and their families live in fear, and we do not tolerate hate speech or threats of violence. Read more in a Council statement my office took the lead in releasing earlier this week.

U District Upzone Legislation

Last week, the Seattle City Council passed the University District upzone, representing a huge step in living our values as a welcoming, sustainable and inclusive city. For the first time in Seattle’s history we will require affordable housing as we grow, reaffirming our commitment to make more room for the people who want to call Seattle home by allowing taller buildings in transit-rich neighborhoods.

Read more of my thoughts on Seattle's affordable growth strategy in my recent Seattle Times Op-Ed, here.

Calling All Artists!

Sanctuary Art Seattle and the U District Partnership are joining forces to transform the University District's utility boxes into sites showcasing the power of public art.

Selected artists will work with a project manager, a steering committee, youth artists, and the public to design and install art onto twenty utility boxes in the U District. For more examples of this kind of urban artwork, click here.

Help connect neighbors through art by submitting your designs by March 8th. Find more information on the program and application process, here.

Yours in civil service,
