What's the Roundup?

Years ago, the Coconino County Democratic Party published a newsletter twice per month. Recently, that has not been consistently done. Now we're aiming for two reports to all Coconino County Democratic Party members per month.

Mid-month, you'll receive a formal newsletter like the one we emailed to you on February 16. This monthly Roundup will come to you at the end of each month with two purposes (1) to let you know what other members and the Executive Committee have been up to during the month that's ending and to highlight items in our calendar for the coming month.

So, here we go with February's Roundup:

What Local Democrats Have Done in February

Seven PC Training/Recruiting meetings, on top of the four held in January, resulted in a more than a 100% increase in the number of PCs working to win in 2018. There's still room for more so come with a friend to the March 11 "All PCs" meeting.  Thanks, Tom Scholes, PC Chair for this great effort.

Charlie Burgin, Operations Manager, is hard into the gargantuan task of creating maps of every precinct in the county and pulling together accurate voter lists.

There is a lot of other work to get ready for the 2018 Election. We've been planning and breaking down tasks and we'll be calling on PCs and all Democrats to do what they can in the coming weeks.

We issued eight Action Alerts on our website in coordination with other activists groups. (See Latest News.) We issued even more Action Alerts on our Facebook Page (@CoconinoDemocrats). The number of followers on our Facebook Page grew by 6% during the month.  We post our events as well as the events of like-minded organizations on our Facebook Page. Party events are only are posted on our website. We're also active on Twitter and have plans to grow that audience in the next few months.

Your Communications Chair, Ann Heitland, has also been hard at work on a strategy to update our website. We're headed for a launch of the new site in May.

The Executive Committee and County Chair have met with some potential candidates for 2018. (If you or anyone you know is interested in running for office as a Democrat, have them contact our County Chair, Nathan Jones, to help them get off to the right start.)

At its regular monthly meeting the Executive Committee hammered out details for organization and finance leading up to the 2018 election cycle. The EC also adopted the party's Mission Statement and Agenda for 2018.

Our first Democratic Political Action! event of the 2018 election cycle over-flowed the room at Cuvee with over 50 attendees, including one of our new Arizona Democratic Party VPs and former Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick. The meeting got off to a bang when First VP Harriett Young broke a glass trying to call the enthusiastic crowd to order.

March is RK month, but February already was filled with hard work by our RK Committee, led by party vice-chair Sallie Kladnik. The success of RK is critical to making 2018 successful. This event raises funds to pay our rent, pay our Operations Manager, and so much more. See the full article about Roosevelt-Kennedy below.

Doug Ballard, along with five other Arizona delegates and their guests, attended the Democratic National Committee's reorganization meeting in Atlanta, where officers for the coming election cycle were elected by a total of 412 delegates. You can read a play-by-play of the balloting for DNC chair as compiled by NPR here. There is also a 10 hour and 43 minute YouTube video of the entire meeting. After two rounds of balloting, Tom Perez, former Labor Secretary and Civil Rights Attorney in the Department of Justice, was elected as the first Latino Chair. Doug Ballard will give us more detail about the meeting in our March newsletter.

Our Arizona Democratic Party Chair, Alexis Tameron Kinsey, posted this photo to Facebook after the DNC Reorg meeting, saying "Proud to have supported, nominated and voted for Keith yesterday in ATL. But let's not lose sight that Tom Perez is also a progressive champion of civil and labor rights - and his work at DOJ helped rid us of Joe Arpaio. I look forward to working with him AND Keith to move our Party in the best way forward. "

March Is Roosevelt-Kennedy Month

Please donate! Deadline for receipt of auction donations (if we are to get them into the program and properly set up the auction) is March 16.  Donations can be in the form of an item, service, or event that we then auction away at the dinner. Each donor will be recognized in our event program, as well as on our website. We hope this recognition serves you and your business well. Please consider making a donation!

Please nominate for the Eleanor Roosevelt Award: The Eleanor Roosevelt Award recognizes a Democrat (other than elected members of the party's executive committee) who have demonstrated Democratic values in their service to the community.  Past honorees have included Sue Strobel, Patrice Horstman, Bill Auberle, Coral Evans, Kerry Blume, Alex Vernon, Jean Perpich, Mary McKell, and Linda Hall. Please send your written nomination letters to the attention of the Executive Committee at PO Box 701, Flagstaff, AZ 86003, or deliver them to Headquarters at 201 E Birch Ave Suite 6. Deadline for receipt of nominations is noon Monday, March 13.

Please join your fellow Democrats for the 17th Annual Roosevelt-Kennedy Dinner. This year's theme is "Defending Democracy." Confirmed speakers are Congressman Tom O'Halleran, Arizona LD-7 Senator Jamescita Peshlakai, and Flagstaff Mayor Coral Evans.

5:30 pm, March 25, 2017, at the Doubletree By Hilton, 1175 W. Route, Flagstaff. (Cash Bar)

RSVP by ordering your tickets online or call Charlie Burgin at Headquarters. Questions? Please email charlie.burgin@ccdem.org or call 928-214-0393. If you purchase a Table for 8 (thank you!), please call the office to give us the names of your guests. Of course, you can also stop by headquarters or mail us a check at POB 701, Flagstaff, AZ 86002.

Proceeds from ticket sales telephonic auction support operations of the Coconino County Democratic Party (AZ), including grassroots organizing, keeping the office open, and paying the salary of our cracker-jack employee.

Social Media Workshops

Remember the Arab Spring? It spread through Twitter. The Coconino County Democratic Party has its own Facebook Page and Twitter handle, which is @CoconinoDems. This year, the Roosevelt-Kennedy Dinner even has its own Facebook Page (and we're selling tickets there -- hint, hint).

Many PCs we've talked with over the last six weeks tell us they are not sure how to use Facebook and Twitter for effective political communication. None of us are sure, but these workshops are designed to make us all better than we are. Whether you have no social media accounts or are on them all day, if you want to improve your political social media skills, come to one of these workshops.

Saturday, March 4, 10 a.m. at Party Headquarters

Wednesday, March 15, 5:30 p.m. at Party Headquarters

Workshop leaders are Ann Heitland and Pam Stinson-Tattersall.

Please call or email Party HQ to sign up because we want to keep these groups to 8 or fewer. Or, signup on Facebook.
