Software and Data Carpentry are hiring a Community Development Lead!
We are excited to announce a position as a full-time staff member to lead community development activities! Software and Data Carpentry have an active global community of researchers, volunteers, learners and member organizations. This person will cultivate and grow this community, overseeing Software and Data Carpentry’s community engagement efforts to develop and support the community, creating pathways for participation and increased communication. You will become an active member of our team of staff and will work with people around the world to advance our mission of building a community teaching digital research skills to make research more productive and reproducible.

Issue Bonanza and Bug BBQ for Data Carpentry lesson release
Data Carpentry is planning its first lesson release. To make these lessons the best that they can be, we need the community! Join the Issue Bonanza March 16-17 or Bug BBQ April 6-7 and identify issues or submit updates. There will be some surprise swag too!

On March 1, Marianne Corvellec, Bernhard Konrad and Aleksandra Pawlik will discuss their career paths and answer questions about career options and planning. Have questions about careers in software and data related fields? They have answers!

New instructor trainers!
Join us in welcoming five new instructor Trainers this month (Jason Williams, Karen Cranston, Allegra Via, Mateusz Kuzak and Kari Jordan) and two in December (Belinda Weaver and Alistair Walsh)! The Trainers Group led three instructor training events this month and certified 32 new Data Carpentry and 25 new Software Carpentry instructors.

The Practice of Reproducible: Research Case Studies and Lessons from the Data-Intensive Sciences by Justin Kitzes, Daniel Turek, Fatma Deniz (Eds.) The book is based around 31 case studies of research workflows, contributed by academic scientists and engineers from a variety of disciplines, in which each author describes the key practices, tools, and methods that they used to try to make their research as reproducible as possible (you'll recognize many SWC instructors among the author list!). If reading 31 case studies sound like a bit much, we've also written a set of summary chapters (Part I of the book) that provides a basic overview of reproducible research and synthesizes lessons learned from across the contributed case studies. -- Justin Kitzes
Unmet Needs For Analyzing Biological Big Data: A Survey of 704 NSF Principal Investigators by Lindsay Barone, Jason Williams, David Micklos - In a 2016 survey of 704 National Science Foundation (NSF) Biological Sciences Directorate principal investigators (BIO PIs), nearly 90% indicated they are currently or will soon be analyzing large data sets. BIO PIs considered a range of computational needs important to their work, including high performance computing (HPC), bioinformatics support, multi-step workflows, updated analysis software, and the ability to store, share, and publish data.
