Newsletter Issue #3 – March 2017

Hello and welcome to March! Thanks to those who have registered.  There is a lot of news this month so we might just get into it!

REGISTRATION 2017!
Have you registered? If not please register ASAP at:
 http://waratahhockeyclub.com/index.php/News/2017-registration.html

Early registrations go in a draw to win a prize
Any member that registers and pays fees in full before the Tuesday 28th March will go into a draw to win a new stick retailing at $400, donated by our proud sponsors, the Cricket and Football Shop NT.

Curby’s Pre-Season Comp
The Curby’s Pre-Season Competition will kick-start the hockey season again this year, commencing 8th & 9th April 2017.  The draw is being finalised, pending team nominations, with matches set for both Open age and Masters age (over 35).
Prize Money is up for grabs for the winners of each category. (Last year the Tahs women took home the cash prize, which was donated towards our senior presentation!).  We will be required to provide Umpires and Tech Bench personnel for the competition and will be reaching out for volunteers to assist closer to the date.
While the pre-season comp is intended to be fun, it is also an opportunity for coaches to grade players. New members or existing members looking to take on the challenge of a new grade are encouraged to get in contact with their coaches and make yourself known.  Contact details can be found on the website: http://waratahhockeyclub.com/index.php/Coaches/Coaches-2017/
Our club has nominated both a men’s and women’s open age team and looking at putting in a Masters team.  If you are interested in playing in any of these teams, please let the club’s committee know via an email to the club secretary – waratahhc@gmail.com

Thanks to all our volunteer’s at the Waratah’s Parkrun last weekend.  It was a great day!

Waratah’s Coach Development
HNT have employed Nick Lenoir as a Pathways Officer and a key part of his role is to work with coaches and provide development opportunities.  Nick will be coming along to our regular Tuesday turf training from time to time and working one-on-one with our junior and senior coaches.  There are also a number of coach development sessions that Nick will be running, each exploring a specific topic.

If you are not a coach, yet might be interested in taking on this role some day, you are most welcome to attend any of the HNT sessions.  There are also online courses that you can do that go towards accreditation.  Let us know if you need further information.

Play by the Rules: Let Kids be Kids Campaign
For those of you who aren’t familiar with Play by the Rules, it is a collaboration between all State and Territory sport and recreation and discrimination departments, the Australian Sports Commission and human rights agencies to provide information, resources and tools to increase the capacity and capability of everyone involved in sport. It assists with preventing and dealing with discrimination, harassment, child safety, inclusion and integrity issues in sport. Our coaches and many of our other club members have completed the free online training courses and we encourage everyone in our club to take a look.  Please see: https://www.playbytherules.net.au/
Last week Play by the Rules launched the 'Let Kids be Kids' campaign. This campaign is designed to raise awareness of poor sideline behaviour at junior sporting events and makes available a range of resources to help educate everybody about the impacts of poor sideline behaviour, what it looks like and strategies to prevent it from happening and causing harm.  Please see the following link: https://www.playbytherules.net.au/let-kids-be-kids

The Cricket and Football Shop NT is supporting WHC again in 2017 with equipment and The Hon. Ken Vowels, MLA, will fund an injury prevention initiative – yoga!

The Hon. Ken Vowels, MLA
The Hon. Michael Gunner, Chief Minister
