Want to Vote and Not Registered?

You can register to vote this Saturday up until 11:30 at the Town Clerk's Office. You may also register on Town Meeting Day, Tuesday, March 14, at the voting location at Canaan Hall - 18 Orange Road. Bring a government issued photo ID and proof of residence.

 

Need to Make a Correction to Your Voter Information?

The Supervisors of the Checklist will be in session on Saturday, March 4, 2017 from 11:00 to 11:30 a.m. at the Town Office, 1169 US Route 4, for additions and corrections to the checklist.

What does it mean when the Selectmen vote to NOT RECOMMEND a Warrant Article for a Service Organization?



 

The example above is one of the Warrant Articles that would provide funding for a regional service organization. By law, the Selectmen are required to indicate if they recommend or do not recommend the Warrant Article.

The Canaan Board of Selectmen believe that these decisions should be left to the voters without their recommendation. The organizations are not the responsibility of the the Board of Selectmen and the services they offer are personal to residents in the Town who can best decide on their need and effectiveness.


The Board of Selectmen are not saying they do not support the organizations. They are saying that they do not want to make a recommendation. They want the voters to decide.
 

ROAD POSTING:

 

Effective Monday February 22, 2017; all Town Roads in the Town of Canaan will be posted temporarily prohibiting all vehicles weighing in excess of (6) six tons from traveling on these roads until further notice.

Pursuant to RSA 231:191 any person who violates the maximum weight limits shall be required to restore the highway if the Town has reason to believe that the highway damage or disturbance is attributable to vehicles or activities under such person’s control or responsibility.

As per RSA 231:191, Paragraph III, written permission to drive a vehicle on Town roads may be granted subject to imposition of reasonable regulations such as bonding and restoring the highway, or other limitations. Such permission may be granted on a case-by-case basis by the Road Agent, depending upon such factors as weather and road conditions.

The weight limit will be lifted as soon as the roads sufficiently dry in the springtime to allow normal traffic without causing pavement and shoulder breakup.

CANAAN IS 36% HIGHER ON A HOUSE OF COMPARABLE VALUE IN ENFIELD. 
 

The Warrant Article that asked to change the school tax allocation formula so that it considers both students and tax base was changed to a study committee at the School District  Deliberative Session on February 4th.

The Canaan Board of Selectmen and the Town Administrator support the study committee. There appears to be an understanding on the part of the School Board and the Superintendent that the current formula does not work. The recommendation to have the study committee was supported by the School Board and Superintendent.

It is up to the voters to create the study committee. In order to have action on changing the funding formula next year, the VOTERS MUST VOTE FOR THE STUDY COMMITTEE. If you do not vote for it, there will be no change and the school tax rates will continue climbing.

If the study committee is appointed, finding the solution to the funding issue will then be the responsibility of the committee, the School Board, the Business Manager and the Superintendent.  

The voters will be able to consider the study committee's proposal in light of their tax bills next November.

The Board of Selectmen and the Administrator pushed for change. Right now, homes that are exactly the same are taxed a third more in Canaan than in Enfield. The design for the  solution is now in other hands. We wish them success in finding an acceptable solution for all.

Furnace, Gas, Electrical and Plumbing rules and the State Building Code and Canaan Building Permits

All commercial buildings require permits to do electrical, plumbing, gas and furnace work. This includes replacements as well as initial construction.

Code compliance is not Zoning where someone is told what they can do or not do on their property. It is a set of NH State rules that say if you are doing construction, you have to do it safely.

State law and regulations require that new construction in homes must be in accordance with the State Building Code which for the most part is the International Building Code.

Failure to meet code can be dangerous, may impact insurance, may prevent occupancy and may prevent property sales and financing. All of these requirements are becoming more important.

Canaan is looking at a way to let all builders, including home owners, know what the requirements are and to allow State Permitting by Notification and Certification. Under this plan, applicants for a Canaan Building Permit for major construction including major repair or replacement work would have to have a plumber or electrician or a gas technician or the homeowner themselves (single family homeowners only) certify that the work was done in accordance with code. Specific plans are not required. What is required is that someone takes responsibility for the work being done to code.

If you have trouble paying your property taxes because you have low income, you may be eligible for an Elderly (over 65) or Handicapped (Total) Exemption.


Income levels must be under $24,000 if single and $36,000 if married.

An exemption is a reduction in the tax value of your home. It may be as much as an $85,000 reduction.

You must apply before April 15 at the Town Office - Call 523-4501 ext 3 for information.

HELP WANTED
Qualified Heavy Equipment and Vehicle Lead Mechanic

Responsibilities include repair and preventive maintenance on a variety of heavy duty diesel trucks, construction equipment, fire equipment, solid waste equipment, small engines and police cruisers.  Candidates must have the ability to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair engines, drive-train, hydraulic and electrical systems for heavy equipment, tractors, trucks and automobiles including gas and diesel vehicles. Candidates must have experience with computerized diagnostics including electrical systems. A complete understanding of mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, structural design, and electrical skills are necessary, along with all types of welding and fabrication skills.  Candidate should have experience with maintenance of fleets with up to twenty five vehicles. A Class A or B CDL license is preferred, along with appropriate certifications as needed.  ASE certifications are desirable. Vocational training at either public or private programs is desirable. Must be self directed and coordinate repairs for six departments. Good organization and communication skills are necessary. Familiarity with computerized maintenance records and inventory is desired. A minimum of three (3) years experience is required. Candidates must be available in emergency situations and pass initial and periodic drug screens. Candidates must be located within 45 minutes drive time of Canaan. Current salary range is $38,912 to $45,027 depending on qualifications.
