Eastern Edge Gallery has been a committed artist-run space for the sustained and burgeoning contemporary art community in Newfoundland since 1984. Established in the heart of St. John’s as one of Atlantic Canada’s most vital and admired non-profit arts organizations, the gallery plays an essential role in the advocacy and exhibition of contemporary artistic practice.
Encouraging and facilitating crucial dialogue on issues explored by local, Canadian and international artists alike, Eastern Edge is dedicated to rigorous professionalism bolstering a diverse and intersectional community of art makers. Though initiatives such as the rOGUE Gallery and Hold Fast festival the artist-run center can engage and promote exciting contemporary arts programming to a wide range of audiences.
Currently, we are seeking a Director with equal commitment to the established position Eastern Edge Gallery has achieved within the community. We also expect that they will take a lead in expanding opportunities for artists, professionals, and audiences to become involved within the gallery. The successful candidate will ideally have expertise in Atlantic Canada’s contemporary art networks and familiarity with the current climate of visual arts communities in Newfoundland and Labrador. We are looking for an enthusiastic vision to help improve the experience for Eastern Edge members and broaden our points of access and impact across the province.
Qualifications:
Foundational and current knowledge in contemporary art and cultural practices on local, national, and international levels
Post-secondary degree in visual arts, museum studies, or equivalent
Arts administrative skills and experience working in collaboration with a Board of Directors
Advanced experience working in a gallery, museum, artist-run centre, or non-profit cultural organization (ideally 3-5 years)
Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with gallery stakeholders, members, and employees
Proven financial management track record with fluent knowledge of current funding bodies
Excellent oral and writing skills for purposes of grant writing and the communications role on behalf of the gallery
Advanced experience with display methods, media, and presentation technology for installation
Working knowledge of computer applications including: Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Suite (Photoshop, InDesign), various social media outlets, and web page management
Substantial expertise in event organizing and the creation of fundraising initiatives

HOLD FAST Contemporary Arts Festival

Eastern Edge Gallery seeks local, national, and international artists to present their work as part of HOLD FAST Contemporary Arts Festival. Each festival artist will give an artist talk, share skills in an artist-led workshop and present their work in the downtown Art Crawl.
This year we are also offering an artist residency opportunity in the gallery main space from July 4th- August 11th with the expectation that the chosen artist will present/ perform/ participate in the Hold Fast Festival Programming too. All interested artists should specify their interest in being considered for the residency program.
About the festival:
HOLD FAST is a four-day celebration of contemporary art practice held in August in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. Now going into its 18th year, HOLD FAST is St. John’s only festival dedicated to contemporary art and the longest running in the province. HOLD FAST regular events are free and open to all.
Previously known as the Art Marathon Festival, HOLD FAST delivers accessible, meaningful and critically-relevant contemporary art programming across an array of media including: installation, performance, screenings, artist talks, dance, community events and artist-led workshops for people of all ages.
Individuals, groups, curators and collectives in all visual arts media may apply.
The Art Crawl is the premiere event of HOLD FAST: one night of contemporary art installations and performances that transforms downtown St. John’s into a hub of artistic activity. For the Art Crawl, artists are encouraged to propose a variety of contemporary art actions, which may include:
Performance art (site-specific or staged in public parks, storefronts, local galleries, etc.)
Local community collaboration (participatory art works or interventions with public space)
Video/sound/off-site installation and sculpture
Professional fees for exhibition, artist talk, and workshop will be paid when applicable. Eastern Edge Gallery covers travel expenses up to $300 and provides billeted accommodations for exhibiting artists.
We are dedicated to cultural diversity in our programming and encourage applications from contemporary artists and curators of diverse communities and backgrounds.
Proposals should include:
CV/contact info (1-2 pages)
Short artist bio (50-100 words for promotional use)
Artist/curatorial statement (up to 1 page)
Art Crawl project description (include equipment list and special technical needs) (1-2 pages)
Art Crawl Project overview (50 words summarizing core concept of project description for promotional use)
1-4 HR Workshop proposal (include material and technical needs) (up to 1 page)
Image list (1 page)
Support materials in the following formats as appropriate to the proposal:
Up to 10 images in Jpeg format 72 dpi, dimensions of 1024 x 768 pixels (approx. 500 KB), RGB or SRGB colour mode only
Video (max. 5 minutes) (If too large to attach in email please provide link)
Audio (max 5 minutes)
All submissions must be sent as email attachments (no zip files), and must not exceed 25 MB. – Please do not send additional documents. Please send images as JPGs and text files as PDFs.
Please indicate if you would like to be considered for the artists residency and if so include a residency project description with your submission.
