Kon Wajiro: Sketches and Social Spaces
The VT Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center will be displaying select works from architect Kon Wajiro this month, from March 16 to 24 in the Red Room. In conjunction with this exhibit, visiting lecturer Dr. Izumi Kuroishi will present three talks:

Spring Break integrated project team outreach to the underserved MLSoC, in partnership with Peacework, works to support the accessibility of sustainable agriculture education, employment opportunities, and affordable fresh food in communities throughout Kaua’i, an island with surprisingly high homeless and underserved populations. Students from Building Construction (BC), Construction Engineering and Management (CEM), Architecture, and Industrial Design apply their skills and education to deliver construction and engineering projects that support local initiatives. This year's project is the construction of a garden facility for a local Hawaiian immersion school, "Kawaikini". The garden is part of a larger initiative to ensure all students, including low-income students who qualify for a school food lunch program, have access to healthy, local, culturally relevant foods.

Studio Collective is now accepting work from architecture, industrial design, interior design, and landscape architecture students to be published in the student work section of our journal, released in May 2017.
Work will be judged by a panel of faculty and students, and receives significant recognition if chosen.

DEADLINE THIS FRIDAY - Undergraduate students at Virginia Tech in all fields are invited to submit a poem to The Steger Poetry Prize contest, established by President Emeritus Charles W. Steger and University Distinguished Professor Nikki Giovanni. The first place prize is $1,100. The second place prize is $500 and third place is $300. The prize is administered by Professor Giovanni and judged by a committee of faculty from various disciplines at the university. Deadline is Friday, March 17th by midnight. submission form

NEW - Studio North is a six day intensive building workshop. The workshop offers students the opportunity to engage with the rural landscape and to imagine, develop and construct inventive design solutions. An architectural education is best experienced through engagement in all aspects of the building process. This workshop is a fully immersive design experience. The workshop takes place in Norwich, Vermont. Each session investigates a particular interest and responds with the design and construction of a complete prototype structure. The workshop is limited to ten participants and lead by architect Keith Moskow FAIA and Robert Linn AIA of the Boston based firm, Moskow Linn Architects. Studio North is currently seeking applicants for this summer's workshop of scheduled for June 4-10, 2017. The workshop is open to interested students of all abilities. NEW - Yale School of Architecture is hosting a Spring 2017 symposium, "Material Light :: Light Material." The symposium, organized by Michelle Addington, Hines Professor of Sustainable Design, will take place on April 7-8, 2017 at the Yale School of Architecture in New Haven, CT; the keynote speaker will be Kazuyo Sejima of SANAA.
The event aims to challenge the increasing normalization of homogeneous environments through an exploration of the behavior of light and its interaction with human perception. The design disciplines have approached light through the design of lighting, i.e., light as determined by tangible artifacts that over-privilege planar materials. By assuming that lighting is the resultant of constituent properties and surfaces, this approach neglects the contingency of perception. Light, however, is both an instrumental means and a performative end and, as such, the most strategic use of materials would be as discretionary interventions at the micron scale to facilitate the movement of light. Light is at the nexus of the physical and the physiological, the material and the virtual, the formal and the phenomenal. How do we invert our normative approach and design what we see by designing what we can’t see?

The goal of this year's conference is to facilitate a discussion on the subjects of architecture, design and urban planning in the context of global technological progress. DEADLINE THIS WEDNESDAY - Island Design Assembly brings together a team of students and architects for eight intensive days to live off-the-grid while designing and building a project for an island community in Penobscot Bay, Maine. The June session is open to students from all colleges and universities. No experience with design or construction is necessary. IDA is led by McLeod Kredell Architects, and student participants may consider the experience a professional externship with the firm. IDA projects have won three AIA awards for excellence in architecture, and the program is one of sixteen case studies to be featured in the forthcoming book from Routledge Press, The Design Build Studio: Crafting Meaningful Work in Architecture Education.
