Say no to single-use

Last year Sustainable Neighbourhood volunteers from around the city agreed to coordinate an education campaign to discourage the use of plastic shopping bags, and other single-use plastics.

Steve from Toronto is coordinating a series of shopping centre displays to educate the public about the impacts of single-use plastics and demonstrate simple actions to avoid them.  We will have some reusable bags to give away, and other displays to engage with the public.

The stalls will be at:

  • Toronto Town Square, Thursday 6 April, 4-6pm
  • Belmont Citi Centre, Monday 10 April, 4-6pm
  • Charlestown Square, Thursday 13 April, 4-7pm
  • Glendale Stockland, Saturday 15 April, 9am-12pm
We are looking for volunteers to help out on the stalls.  Do you have an hour or so to assist?  Please contact Steve, and let him know your availability.
Clean Up Australia Day
Sustainable Neighbourhood volunteers made a big contribution to Clean Up Australia Day this year.  Sustainable Neighbourhood Groups registered their own sites in Toronto, Redhead, Charlestown, Myuna Bay and Swansea Heads, along with many other sites across the City.
More than 10 tonnes of rubbish was collected, as well as 96 tyres!  Well done to everyone who lent a hand.
The Rathmines Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group are off to a great start after their recent launch event.
The Wangi Mens' Shed, local Landcare, Council Rangers and local Pet Care were on hand with informative displays.
A steady stream of locals attended throughout the day, along with the Mayor and a number of Councillors. Everyone enjoyed the displays, raffle, BBQ and meeting their fellow neighbours.
