Elevate Education Presentation: A presentation from Elevate Education on ‘Ace Your Exams’ was well received by Sixth Form students. Elevate’s policy is to use young presenters who have just completed their degrees, making the advice more directly relevant.
Responses included:
‘helpful with a range of different techniques to choose’
‘good advice on how to stay calm during an exam’
‘helpful advice from someone who understands’
‘they emphasised the importance of practice papers for successful revision’
‘read the work of other students that have gained higher grades than you’
‘re-correct work that is wrong - don’t think that you will remember’
From 111 responses, 100 students would recommend the Elevate presentation to their peers, and 97 said it was time well spent.
Oxbridge Convention: Abbie Arkell travelled to Surrey to attend a selective conference on making applications to either Cambridge or Oxford University. Students were advised on the application process and Abbie attended subject seminars on Psychology and Social Human Political Sciences. She saw how the courses are structured and this has inspired her to plan to apply to Cambridge. Other seminars were delivered on student life at university. Abbie felt the time was well spent and she now understands the importance of making her application competitive.
Head Boy and Head Girl elections: We have had the Trump and Clinton battle - now we prepare for the campaign to beat all campaigns. The Head Boy and Head Girl elections have begun again. The applications are in and interviews have been held to determine who will be entering the next stage of the process. With six Head Boy and nine Head Girl applications there is a competitive atmosphere among potential candidates. All will be notified this week if they have been successful and will begin their campaign after the Easter break. Each candidate will deliver their speech in House assemblies with pupils and staff voting at the end. It certainly is an exciting time and we look forward to the new appointments!
Special thanks: A special thank you to Year 12 students Chimi Chukwudire and Jermaine Brown who are a credit to the Sixth Form and school having helped with all rugby fixtures both in school and away this year. They have run training sessions, coached pupils in all years and travelled to games to support and encourage the teams. They are a credit to the PE department and will be looking to take on their own teams next year to help develop their coaching skills.

Library news: Every day fake news is in the news. There is no getting away from it. News which was previously distributed by newspapers, radio and TV is now just as likely to come from Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and other means of communication. How can we ensure that our students know where to find trustworthy news and have the questioning and critical-thinking skills to evaluate information from wherever they find it? This is why we subscribe to The Day. For further information please contact School Librarian Jayne Davidson.

Year 9 Rugby Essex Plate final: The U14s put on a brilliant performance at Barking RFC against Swyene Park School. They had recorded five wins and a draw en route to the final but had to settle for the runners-up spot after losing 10-5. Charlie Tremayne had an exceptional game and was Man-of-the-Match, a massive achievement considering he is a year young. Special mention must go to Sixth Formers Chimieze Chukwudire and Jermain Brown for helping out on the evening and during training sessions. Mr Calver sald: "The boys put everything on the line during the game and it was sad to come runners-up, although it bodes very well for next year with so many of the boys playing up an age group. Next year we will look to enter Essex and national competitions so the boys will have plenty to get their teeth stuck into.”
Squad: Haydon Steel, Zyad Zikyra, Mason Noble-Williams, Muhsin Khan, Callum McEvoy, Dominic Small, Dylan West, Makyle Bayley, Max Cotterell, Harry Turner, Andrew Jones, Charlie Treymane, Adrian James, Peter Orikahi, Brandon Smith, Wylde Tulip, Oliver Regan, Callum Glanville.
Award for Owen: Under-18 Hockey Player of the Season Owen de Graff (Year 12) has received an award from the Mayor of Redbridge in recognition of his talents and efforts at Redbridge and Ilford Hockey Club. Owen started playing in the mini league U10s and U12s. He has come a long way in a very short space of time and now plays with the men’s 1st team. Owen is quick on the pitch, has excellent skills and is always thinking about the game. A well-deserved award. Well done Owen!
