“Sometimes small decisions – choices you make in an instant – have such heavy consequences.” Shaun Tomson

I am sure that your daughter(s) would have shared at least some of the stories that surfing legend Shaun Tomson told us on Monday in Assembly.  It was such a pleasure to see their rapt attention to Shaun’s motivational talk in which he encouraged the girls to develop their own ‘Code’ for life.  He suggested writing up a short list of no more than 12 ‘I Will’ statements.  The one that has grabbed my attention is “I will be myself”.  So much is wrapped up in those four words as they encapsulate all the values that have been inculcated in us by our parents and friends.  My challenge to all the girls is to try and be the best version of "you" possible.  Pay attention to those things that make you happy right down in your soul - those things that are the ultimate reason others enjoy your company and love you.

I have been given 30 copies of Shaun's new book "The Code" by the sponsor Liberty Life.  I would like to make these available to the first girl in each Form Class to hand in their own ‘Code’ of 12 ‘I Will’ statements.  These can be handed to their Form Teacher who will write the date and time carefully on the back and pass the first neatly done ‘Code’ on to me.

Shaun would also be glad to have these posted onto his website www.indi.com/shauntomson -  please indicate that you are from Rustenburg Girls’ High, as he’d like to see the impact this will have on us as a school. Girls are encouraged to be creative with their submissions.

There is never a quiet week at Rustenburg with so many opportunities for girls to be involved in activities that excite them.  We look forward to the Jazz Band playing at the V&A Band Slam this Friday evening at 18:00 and I hope to see many of you there, supporting our girls.  Ignition are away on a camp; Water Polo matches take place at Somerset College; the PGSGU Tennis Tournament is hosted on our courts and the Cape Town Cycle Tour fills the city this weekend.

By the time you read this newsletter, we will have completed a Whole School Evaluation by the WCED. My thanks go to all the staff who have worked very hard this past week to provide all that the Department expects from us.

As a school we offer our condolences to Mr Cedric Van Dyk and his family on the passing of his mother and trust that many happy memories are theirs to hold onto.

I wish each girl the best for the last few weeks of term and know they will all be making you, their parents, proud of their achievements and successes, big or small.

This Friday is a very important day on the Music calendar as it is the Band Slam at the V & A Waterfront Amphitheatre. Our Jazz Band is playing at 18h00.

Crowd participation is an important criterion that helps to determine whether you succeed to the next round. May I request that as many Music parents and Band parents support this 20-minute gig. Welcome to our new Brass Teacher Mr Buitendag

My name is Murray Buitendag. I am originally from East London but have been living in Cape Town for the past 6 years. I pursued my love for Music in 2011 and studied for a Bachelor of Music degree majoring in Jazz Performance. Since obtaining my degree, I find extreme satisfaction in performing art and teaching what I know to the young musicians of today.

Some of the Music groups that I am involved in are AM Quartet, West Coast Quartet, Grassy Spark, MC Big Band, Darryl Andrews Band and various other solo/side projects. Grassy Spark has played at every major festival in South Africa and will be playing at Kirstenbosch on 26 March. We opened for UB40 during their SA tour in 2016 which saw us playing in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban. The AM Quartet took us touring Sweden in 2015 and landed us on the bill for the prestigious Stockholm Jazz festival.

I look forward to continuing to teach the girls in the RGHS Music department. After all, Music is a never ending journey of passion, information and creativity.

Lerato's Hope Food Drive Results

Thank you to the Lerato’s Hope brand ambassadors Khanyo, Caitlin and Talitha as well as the volunteers who helped them: Noa, Alex S, Lara Rule, Rebecca, Helen, Mia and Kayla and to those of you who contributed.

An assortment of 230 items of non-perishable food items and toiletries like toothpaste and soap as well as some cash were collected outside the Westerford Spar. The estimated total value of items collected was R2904.09.

Most of the above items have been delivered to Abahlobo Children's Home in the Barcelona Township. They receive items every month from Lerato's Hope, usually from items gathered at the food drives.
