New 1.Question Below: Mark Ingram / Athletic Director / UAB (Part I)
Next Sunday's NCAA MBB Tourney Selection Show will only be 90 minutes in length & the bracket will be revealed within the first 30, a change from last year's drawn-out process that received some rough reviews. CBS Sports Chair McManus says the NCAA has also taken the appropriate steps to further guard the make-up of the field & eliminate the possibility of leaks, another black mark from last year. "They’ve constricted the pool of people who have the bracket (ahead of the show) so that it’s smaller than ever, and I’m confident they have their arms around this and we won’t have a leak." (link)
Thankfully all are safe after the plane taking the Michigan MBB team to the B1G Tournament in Washington D.C. was forced to abort its takeoff attempt due to high winds. The plane suffered extensive damage after sliding off the runway, but everyone aboard was evacuated and there are no reported injuries. (linklink); Michigan MBB manager Davis tweets out a brief video depicting the plane's condition and the high winds that caused it. (link); The Wolverines will now head to D.C. here in just a little bit (7:30a), land 8:45a, play at Noon. (link)
The Daily Press' Teel raps with ACC Commish Swofford prior to yesterday's games in Brooklyn as Swofford notes the importance of having a strong presence in the southern, Mid-Atlantic & northeast corridors of his league. The MBB Tourney is set to return to Greensboro in 2019, pending HB2 developments, "The time will come over the next couple months if nothing has clarified itself through legislative action in the state that we will have to make that decision simply from a practical standpoint, because a tournament like this you’re looking at an arena for a week. … We’ll reach a point where we can’t wait any longer." On the FB title game front, Swofford would like to re-establish roots in Charlotte or build on last year's event in Orlando. Notes the likelihood of some strong league FB match-ups out of the gate for the linear ACC Network in 2019 (Virginia Tech-Clemson a possibility), doesn't comment on exact financials, but expects the league to compete well on the financial front. (link)
After yesterday's close loss to Miami (FL) in the ACC Tourney, Syracuse MBB HC Boeheim sounded-off on where the event should be held on an annual basis, points to recruiting centers of NYC, Atlanta, Washington D.C. "There's no value in playing in Greensboro, none. It's there because the league's been there and the office is there, and they have 150 people that the ACC needs. That's why it's there. It shouldn't be there." (link); Via Twitter, the City of Greensboro lobbed back sharply, "We kindly disagree. But I guess you can lose in the 1st round anywhere. At least it's a quick ride home." (link)
Big East: The Women@Forbes' "Day in the Life" series follows Commish Ackerman during her hectic March Madness stretch. Notably, Ackerman talks about making time for campus student newspaper requests when at all possible, and how, when she began her career, all her mentors were men, but believes that, "it's conceivable, if not certain" that a woman will eventually hold the top spot in a power conference that sponsors FB. More. (link); Former Commish Tranghese emphasizes the importance of the league tourney being identified with Madison Square Garden, and recounts how former Commish Gavitt pushed the issue with MSG once Patrick Ewing committed to Georgetown as a PSA because "now we've got the cache." During his tenure, Tranghese was approached about moving the tourney, an idea he was quick to squelch, calling it "heresy" due to its importance in recruiting and TV negotiations, and opposition from league coaches. (link); Georgetown & St. John's MBB scuffled a bit last night during their opening round match-up in The Garden. Johnnies HC Mullen & Hoyas AC Ewing Jr. with some words & all sorts of connections to the past. (link, link)
The Knoxville News Sentinel's Adams at it again, wonders if the way the Tennessee AD search was handled may impact the future of new AD Currie's tenure. Adams continues to stump for former Vols FB HC Fulmer & UT Chattanooga AD Blackburn, who he says never got a call back after a meeting with Turnkey Search. Former FB AC Matthews believes the decision was up to Cleveland Browns owner & mega UT donor Haslam. "Eventually, (controversy over the hiring process) will blow over, but there will be a tremendous amount of scrutiny on Currie. People will watch him like a hawk watching a mouse in the field." (Can't help but shake my head at this passage, "The hiring of Currie took place so quickly that there was no media scrutiny. For months, Fulmer and Blackburn were subjected to such scrutiny." Adams clearly has no shame.) (link)
Former Baylor Prez Starr opens up about the ongoing sexual assault investigation and former FB HC Briles, whom Starr calls "an honorable man." Starr acknowledges that all the facts associated with the investigation have yet to be revealed, saying that "we have these email and text messages (made public through a legal filing by regents earlier this year), and I don't know how to assess them. I've always been of the view that you need to have all the facts and then you assess them. ... We need to have truth out there so we can come to informed judgments." Starr also contends that universities are not equipped to adjudicate Title IX investigations, saying he is "deeply vexed by the entire structure that has been erected in American colleges and universities -- fundamentally, on the basis of institutional incapacity -- to be effective adjudicators of these kinds of issues. ... We're not courts. We simply lack the expertise, and I think we lack the traditions of the law and the judicial system to ensure all persons, to the fullest extent possible, are fully protected." Full interview. (link)
More tension around the Kansas MBB program as stand-out freshman Jackson has been suspended for the opening game in the Big 12 Tourney for the Jayhawks stemming from a fender bender where he left the scene back in early February. Perspective from HC Self: "I think almost all of it is self-inflicted. This would never, ever be an issue if he [Jackson] didn’t have a prior issue." Senior big man Lucas: "There’s already a big enough spotlight on us, there’s already eyes on us. It’s kind of like a glass house with everybody. We already kind of have that understanding. […] That’s what coach has kind of been harping on. There’s no reason to let it carry on to the court. When you’re on it, it’s a whole different world. It’s a nice little escape for us." (link)
Boulder's Daily Camera publishes an editorial supporting Colorado's hiring of an outside law firm to investigate the university's response to domestic abuse allegations against former FB AC Tumpkin, but issues a series of questions it believes the investigation must address. At the top of the list, find out who at CU, if anyone, informed Tumpkin's attorney of the allegations. "One of the most troubling aspects of the chain of events...is the allegation that two of the victim's phone calls to head football coach Mike MacIntyre were followed by calls to the victim from Tumpkin's defense attorney," whose firm is a "longtime sponsor of CU's annual football kickoff luncheon and was a listed sponsor of the event again last summer." Other questions include whether Chancellor DiStefano or additional leaders at the university were made aware of the restraining order filed against Tumpkin and whether CU referred Tumpkin to the aforementioned defense attorney. "By answering these questions, we hope the university will bring [DiStefano] and the athletic department under the same rigorous standard he has applied to others." Full list. (link)
Hogan Assessment Systems CEO and Columbia University faculty member Chamorro-Premuzic with a zinger of a title for his Harvard Business Review entry: "Why Do So Many Incompetent Men Become Leaders?" Thesis: "When it comes to leadership, the only advantage that men have over women... is the fact that manifestations of hubris -- often masked as charisma or charm -- are commonly mistaken for leadership potential, and that these occur much more frequently in men than in women." More: "The paradoxical implication is that the same psychological characteristics that enable male managers to rise to the top of the corporate or political ladder are actually responsible for their downfall. In other words, what it takes to get the job is not just different from, but also the reverse of, what it takes to do the job well. As a result, too many incompetent people are promoted to management jobs, and promoted over more competent people." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Nike has announced that by the Spring of 2018, "Pro Hijabs" will be on the shelves for $35. The concept stemmed from the struggle Muslim women have "with finding headgear that will not slow them down or distract them from arduous physical exercise." Last month Nike unveiled the "What will they say about you?" campaign featuring female athletes from the Arab region. (link)

Adidas CEO Rorsted says the brand is poised to boost profitability by selling more full-priced products, improving the supply chain and bringing more in-season products to market in order to alleviate inventory loss. In addition, Rorsted cites a new factory in Germany and a planned factory in Atlanta to speed production to keep up with demand, specifically that of its popular Boost sneakers, which Adidas has had trouble keeping on shelves. Rorstead: "Boost is one where we left a lot of money on the table." Accordingly, the company raised its sales forecast from the high single digits to a 10-12% average annual increase through 2020. Net income from continuing operations is also projected to increase between 20-22% during the same period, an increased forecast from the previous 15%. Finally, Adidas says it will focus on its flagship brand, along with Reebok, and is currently seeking a buyer for CCM Hockey, with plans to move Taylor Made, Adams Golf and Ashworth in the future. (link)
HC Notes: Ohio State AD Smith publicly supports MBB HC Matta, "While we are not currently where we aspire to be with our performance on the court, Thad understands better than anyone that component has to improve. I am confident in his leadership to return the program to the winning ways that we have all enjoyed during his 13 year tenure." (link); Nebraska AD Eichorst does the same for MBB HC Miles, who will be back to lead the Huskers again next year. (link); Missouri AD Sterk is looking for a MBB HC with proven DI success, could pay in excess of $2.2M annually, notes that some candidates may play well in to March. (link); Georgia MBB HC Fox on the backing he's received from AD McGarity, "I didn’t know a statement was coming until he had to make a statement, obviously. To be honest with you, I never felt any lack of support from him or our administration. They’ve been terrific the entire time. I was never caught up in that whole thing because I always felt terrific support from them." (link); Former Georgetown MBB great Iverson believes HC Thompson III is still the right guy to lead the Hoyas. (link); South Carolina MBB HC Martin sounds like he wants to stay in Columbia as his name is being connected to openings. (link)
The Reno Gazette-Journal sits down with Nevada Senior Assoc. AD Bennett, who is serving the third year of a five-year term on the NCAA WBB Tournament selection committee. Bennett says watching enough games and gathering sufficient information is the most difficult part of selecting all 64 teams and adds that the committee has all the game resources they need, from ESPN archives to streaming access via the conferences to Synergy film share. "On the committee, we have ongoing e-mail chains and text messages where we make sure we’re looking at all the right teams. We’re all assigned four conferences. ... We report on those conferences, we listen to everybody else’s reports, we provide to the NCAA what teams we watch and what our feedback is and the staff comes back to us and says, 'We really need to get eyes on these teams.'" Bennett will serve as chair next year & says former leaders have told her about the difficulty of balancing personalities, but being consistent & objective in picking the right field. (link)
Of interest for a new AD at Boston College as BC Interruption's O'Neil takes a look at how to put butts back in seats, arguing that increased giveaways, an organized chant schedule for students, improved scheduling, and renovations to the Conte Forum are all ways to improve the fan experience. O'Neil also writes that the next Eagles AD needs to be a BC grad or former employee, should understand, but not overstate the importance of academics, and has to focus on generating excitement on campus by connecting with the university community. O'Neil: "If BC makes a good hire at AD, there is no reason why the Eagles cannot be great again in the next few years." (link)
Michigan State Director of Sports Medicine & Performance/Head Team Physician Kovan, as well as former Women's Gymnastics HC Klages, along with two others connected to MSU, have been named as defendants in an amended complaint against former university & Team USA Gymnastics doctor Nassar. A university statement says it can't comment, but takes all allegations very seriously. Preliminary hearings set for mid-May. (link)
Headlining author and sports media reporter Jim Miller tells Dan Patrick that he believes sports consumption will eventually move to an a la carte pay-per-view model where prices fluctuate based on demand, similar to the business models of StubHub and Uber. "We could be looking at a situation where you go on your phone, you go on your laptop and you buy that game. So you don’t have an NBA pass for the entire season or you don’t have some big cable bill but you do everything from your own customization point of view. ... And it doesn’t even mean you have to tie yourself into a particular league. Just like you go on iTunes and pick out a song, you can pick out, 'OK, I want to watch the Warriors and the Cavs tonight, and I’ll pay $3.99 for that game or two bucks or whatever.'" Miller also tells Patrick that were he an NFL owner "I would actually think about selling in the next couple of years," citing a downward trend in ratings and shortages in the "supply chain," which he calls a more serious problem due to parents steering their children away from HS and NCAA FB. MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
U.S. District Court Judge Pratt cites precedent set by the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in ruling that the NCAA transfer rule, which requires student-athletes to sit out a year before participating in athletics at their new school, is an eligibility regulation related to education, not a restraint on trade -- as had been argued by lawyers for former Northern Illinois FB student-athlete Deppe -- and therefore does not violate antitrust law. Pratt also rules that Deppe has no legal grounds on which to sue the NCAA due to his not being enrolled at a DI school or attempting to play football; however, Pratt adds that Deppe could potentially establish legal standing "by adequately pleading a sufficiently concrete and particularized injury." Pratt gave a similar ruling in a case involving student-athlete Pugh, who was attempting to transfer from an FBS to an FCS school. NCAA chief legal officer Remy: "It is unfortunate that plaintiffs' lawyers continue to file meritless lawsuits while ignoring multiple court decisions that uphold NCAA transfer rules." (link)
Still no word on a new AD at Sacramento State, but here's evidence the on-campus presentations actually took place as the student newspaper grabbed quotes from two of the four candidates. Louisiana Monroe AD Wickstrom: "The reason I am willing to leave an FBS school to come to an FCS program like Sac State is because I know we can win national championships here." Cal Executive Director of Business Partnerships & Services Fulp: "We are going to be comfortable winning championships." A bit more, including a pic of Oregon State Deputy AD for Capital Projects & Internal Operations Massari during his session. (link)
NM Fishbowl's Libit has filed an open records lawsuit naming the University of New Mexico Foundation and as well as the UNM Board of Regents. Libit explains the lawsuit as challenging "the Foundation's argument that it should be exempt from the New Mexico Inspection of Public Records Act (IPRA) because it is a private, non-profit entity. The lawsuit contends that this claim is merely a canard designed to keep actual public records locked away from the actual public." The lawsuit stems from last year's naming rights deal with WisePies at The Pit, and after being redirected by the university to the foundation, Libit relays his response from communications director Kemp, who denied the request: "Our relationship with The University of New Mexico is contractual. The UNM Foundation is not a public body, and is therefore not subject to IPRA, although we strive to be as transparent as possible without compromising the privacy of our donors or employees." (link)
ESPNW's Fader explores the questions often attached to recruiting junior college WBB student-athletes at the DI level. Gulf Coast State (NJCAA) WBB HC Scovel says she fights against those misconceptions on a daily basis: "There is definitely a stigma that us juco people have to fight every day. It's important that we show people they're wrong. They don't understand that we're not dumb. We're not stupid. We can read and write." With success stories like Sheryl Swoopes and Saudi Roundtree, coaches such as Troy HC Rigby, who guided the Trojans to the NCAA tournament last season for the second time in school history and regularly recruits juco players, says she is "proud to be associated with junior college. It can change a person's future and their kids' future. It improves people every day." (link)
In a recent anonymous survey conducted by 247Sports, which polled 16 prospective FB student-athletes from the Dallas area with offers from 'Power 5' schools, Texas A&M graded out the lowest when it came to hosting recruiting visits. One recruit noted: "Texas A&M was the worst. They didn't even know who I was." Baylor's sexual assault developments and new Texas FB HC Herman were also subjects included in the survey. (link)
Also Noticed: Missed this behind the scenes video of new Arizona AD Heeke's presser & introduction to staff that the Wildcats released last week. Goes along nicely with the last two days of 1.Qs with Assoc. AD for Communications Services Sharpe. (link); We love to watch college hoops here in Louisville & once again the Derby City was the top rated market, followed by Raleigh-Durham, Kansas City, Indianapolis & Greensboro-High Point. (link); Teamworks continues to pile up the wins, this time its the ACC Basketball & Baseball Championships. (link); Arkansas FB will play at Colorado State in 2018. (link); Lock Haven may move its Field Hockey program from DI to DII amid cost cutting. (link); Delaware FB will be one program using Ridell's new Precision-Fit technology next season. "Riddell Precision-Fit is a process that utilizes state-of-the-art 3D scanning techniques to build a completely custom-fitting helmet liner system for individual players." (link); More new content from new Texas FB Creative Director Lange.
