Dear Friends and Colleagues,
we at MTN hope you had a good start into this year and are sure that you are working on great and inspiring new projects. While we are counting down to the opening of MTN 2018 in February next year - we will keep you informed - you again have the chance to watch MTN winning productions live during the next couple of months.
The MTN winner from 2012 "Have a Good Day!" from Lithuania is adding two more cities to their list of worldwide performances. After shows all over Europe, Russia, Shanghai and New York the work about cashiers in a super market will be shown in Portugal (March 10th) and the Netherlands (May 17th).
Annelies van Parys' successful film opera "Private View", MTN winner 2015, will also be performed this month for the first time in Norway. On 11 and 12 March, the Bergen Nasjonale Opera will present two performances during the Borealis Festival of New Music.
And "Slumberland" - the breathtaking film-like musical journey into the world of the night - is still touring through Europe.
We very much hope to see you around at the one or other event. Especially meeting at this year's edition of Operadagen Rotterdam - taking place from May 12th-21st - would be great. We will be there for sure.

Since 1962 World Theatre Day has been celebrated by ITI Centres, ITI Cooperating Members, theatre professionals, theatre organizations, theatre universities and theatre lovers all over the world on the 27th of March. This day is a celebration for those who can see the value and importance of the art form "theatre", and acts as a wake-up-call for governments, politicians and institutions which have not yet recognised its value to the people andto the ndividual and have not yet realised its potential for economic growth.
Each year an outstanding figure in theatre or a person outstanding in heart and spirit from another field is invited to share his or her reflections on theatre and international harmony. What is known as the International Message is translated into more than 50 languages, read for tens of thousands of spectators before performances in theatres throughout the world, and printed in hundreds of daily newspapers. Colleagues in the audio-visual field lend a fraternal hand, with more than a hundred radio and television stations transmitting the Message to listeners in all corners of the five continents.
The message author of 2017 is Isabelle Huppert, the theatre and cinema actress from France.

MTN @University
Prof. David Roesner from the University of Munich, who was giving a lecture during the last MTN Meeting in Rotterdam, is deepening his work on the selected projects of MTN. He was recently holding a seminar for scholars of theatre studies dealing with the various productions of MTN 2015. Part of it were also interviews with members of the creative teams.
Maybe we can look forward to some scientific articles on MTN productions in the future?!

The opera Have a Nice Day! (for 10 voices, piano and live electronics) is a strange ode to capitalism, that illustrates the inevitability of consumption. The anonymous cashier, a person one meets every day, becomes a collective character.

With the suspense of a thriller, the tension of a whodunit and a good dose of humour, in her first opera Annelies Van Parys weaves a subtle web with references to Hitchcock's visual idiom. Following her composition for the successful production "Ruhe" she is continuing her artistic course in musical theatre. This time she is collaborating with the Scottish poet Jen Hadfield, winner of the T.S. Eliot Prize, and the Irish director Tom Creed. The Dutch 33 1⁄3 Collective is responsible for the video and set design. The audience is drawn in and shares the view of a voyeur who shamelessly penetrates into other peoples’ lives. "Private View" confronts us with the ambiguity of watching and being watched, an issue that seems more relevant today than in the past: Big Brother is watching you, more than ever.

Before MTN was established in 2008 the International Theatre Institute already had a long tradition with new works of music theatre.
In 1983 they initiated a triennial event, the Music Theatre Workshop, whose goal was to exchange ideas on new works and developments in this genre. The artistic teams – composers/and or librettist and directors were invited to give lectures presenting the productions with the use of video.
In order to find out more about the hot and new stuff from the past, MTN will bring the old publications to the www and make digitalised copies available online.
