Last winter at this time we were in the middle of a heat wave, worrying about our fruit trees setting buds too early (they did) and our hoophouses getting too hot (they did). This year we’re vacillating between crazy warm weather and frigid cold. Again, we worry about the stress this erratic weather causes to plants and animals. But when the sun rises earlier and sets later, it triggers a decades-old response in Amy and me. It’s time to plant seeds!
Amy has already planted thousands of seeds this winter, for her perennial pollinator plant nursery, because they need cold treatment to germinate. But now is the time we plant seeds for our summer vegetable garden. Such a miraculous gesture of faith. We take the teeny seeds and put them into germinating mix. We give them some warmth, water, and sunshine. And they grow, from vulnerable seedlings that get planted in the soil into strong and healthy plants that bear food that we harvest and cook and share and eat.
The act of planting seeds always fills me with hope and wonder. When my mind wanders to troubles and travail; when my heart forgets about faith and trust....I plant seeds and witness the little green sprout emerging...tender new life that knows how to grow. I grin, knowing that our precious seeds will make delicate seedlings that will grow into vigorous plants that we will harvest and carry into our kitchen. We will chop and dice, roast and braise, stir and whisk our way into your homes and onto your tables to share with your families and friends.
