Our e-newsletters to you are generally filled with upbeat news of the Semillas de Amor kids busy lives. Today, however, we are asking you to read something different.
Yesterday a fire broke out at a Guatemalan government-run children's home that had been built for 400 and housed over 800. The fire killed 32 teenage girls, many others are critically injured. The government is pointing fingers at each other. Tragically these children lost their lives and more than likely suffered abuse from before they entered this supposedly "safe place". At Semillas de Amor we have 11 children, ages 9-16 and keeping up with them is a challenge. What we are sure of is that because our donors are investing in the kids they live in a safe environment, have an amazing education, are truly loved and have opportunities. These kids will not be gang members. They will not be begging for money on the street. Our kids have bright futures. We have fought long and hard for the children and those fights have been with the Guatemalan government. For some reason, our investment and commitment to our kids has been seen as a threat. The fire that killed those girls was just waiting to happen. The exact same thing happened at an orphanage in Zaragoza, Guatemala where I worked for many years, the kid were locked in and 7 died in the fire. I made a promise when I founded Semillas de Amor that our kids would be safe and because of our amazing donors, they have been saved from "the system" that was created to protect them.

Dooney is a STAR!
On a much more positive note our Tibetan Mastiff, Dooney was a shining star as he attended science class on taxonomy with Frankie and Espe.
