Hampi sunset - rock cutting (sous-titres français)
The cutting of the sacred rocks of Hampi

Hello,

Hampi is a unique place in the world, most of it due to its incredible landscape made of hills of big rocks.
These big rocks are the reason why the kings and the gods of India have chosen to live here.
There is something that cannot be explained about the harmony that reigns around these rocks.
A very powerful energy that is one of the main reasons why I spend so long here.
But the reality of "Incredible India" is that often behind the marvels that make this country so incredible, you find a sad truth.

While I was exploring the surroundings of Hampi with my Enfield, I saw some rocks with very uncommon shapes, they were flat and pointy.
I stopped to grab some shots. Very soon after, some people arrived, being very kind and they invited me for lunch. They explained me that these stones were cut by people and that it was a big and dirty business.
I enjoyed this delicious meal and followed my path to meet the people behind this.
I found them and behaved like a tourist who doesn't know that what they do is not very clear.

"Hello!" #beingnice #smiling
"Wow, very strong! Hard worker!"
We share couple words. The usual "Country please? Name please?" and of course the "selfie please?"
They are very proud of their work, their strength and explain me that they do this all day under the heat of the sun.

Later in the day while drinking chai and enjoying the view of the main temple by the river at Laughing Buddha, a very nice guest house, I met Deepak, the owner of the place. We shared some good talks. He is very open minded, well educated and has an extensive knowledge of everything around Hampi (culture, history, spirituality, environment and social issues).
I already knew that this situation was a disaster. These rocks are what make Hampi so magic and seeing them disappear is really heartbreaking.
He told me that it has been going on for a long time now and that they were a group of people who wanted to push the government to react.
They needed images, so I found the motivation to go out and grab more pictures for them:

First view of funny rocks
Full power smashing rocks
The usual "selfie please". Enjoying my role of happy photographer
Abstract stones. Finding beauty behind this sad story.
shattered landscapes
Drawing a line. natural posing
Cutting in action. Big hits after big hits
Massive boulder torn in two and cut to pieces
Reflexion?
Beauty of Hampi and disappearing landscapes
Happy gang of bad boys
Result of many hours of hammering
Lifting heavy rocks
I grabbed one of the rocks to throw it in the trailer and realize the weight they lift.
They tell me to be careful because the stones are very sharp and then show me their hands full of marks.
Happy muscle display
More muscle
The black marks are blows from dynamite.
It's a real pleasure for me to share these images with you.
I have really fallen in love with this magical land and even if I have a good time taking these images, just seeing them hurts me.
I hope that I will be able to publish them and help protect Hampi from this destruction.

Please do not hesitate to share this around you.

All the best

Geoffrey.
