I was very honored to be invited to speak at the Des Moines Women's Club in Des Moines, Iowa, this past Wednesday.
Founded in 1885, the club—whose stated mission is to improve the lives of its members through lifelong learning, to enrich its community through benevolent and scholarship activities, and to preserve and enhance Hoyt Sherman Place—has a rich and fascinating history.
Hoyt Sherman Place—the magnificent former home of the brother of famous Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman—has served as the club's weekly meeting place since 1907. Thanks to the Women's Club, it became the first public art gallery in Des Moines, and has hosted many guest speakers over the years, including Amelia Earhart and Helen Keller.

My talk centered on the importance of 'metabolizing'—or absorbing—love, and how I believe a combination of happiness, art, family, friends, creativity and love…
…can help us all lead happier, healthier, more fulfilled lives.
The audience was generous, kind, highly engaged and eager to learn. They laughed at my basketball jokes…
Cheered happily for their favorite team(s)…
And didn't mind when I snuck in MY favorite: a Kansas Jayhawk!
On the drive home, I told my wife and son—who both accompanied me—that it felt almost as if I were talking to a room filled with clones of my own mother and grandmother!
I think it may have been more than simple happenstance which landed me in front of this incredible group on International Women's Day – and I'm grateful I was able to spend it with them.
Thank you, Des Moines Women's Club. You've given me a very happy heart indeed!

Several weeks ago, I gave a quick lesson in creating greeting cards. Here's a way to put those new skills to good use:
Seven-year-old Katelyn LaFaye Davis of Van Alstyne, Texas was recently diagnosed with cancer, and has asked for cards from around the country to read while she undergoes chemotherapy.
Katelyn's parents, and neighbor Jill Martin, came up with the idea of asking for what they call 'Happy Cards' to help Katelyn stay positive through her battle with cancer. (Click here to read the full story.)
Happy Cards. I like that. Here's mine…

You can send Katelyn cards at the following address:

About Me
Hi. I’m D.E.Uhlig. I’m an artist, author, husband and father.
For as long as I can remember, I have loved to draw. Years ago I gave my wife a hand-drawn card for our anniversary, and she loved it so much she made me promise to ALWAYS hand-draw her cards. Then our three kids made me promise to do the same with their birthday cards. And when I posted some of my drawings online, people began asking how they could purchase my work—so I created this newsletter. I believe in something I like to call “The Happiness of Art” and I hope it makes you smile.
