Pac-12 Commish Scott gets a contract extension through June of 2022. UCLA Chancellor Block, who also serves as Chair of the Pac-12 Board of Directors, "During Larry’s tenure, the Conference has been transformed, not only by expansion, but by innovation and excellence in almost every aspect of our activities. We believe in his bold vision for the Pac-12, and have great confidence in Larry's ability to help us write the next chapter of our Conference’s illustrious history." Scott thankful to CEO group, "We have many challenges and opportunities ahead, and I look forward to working with our presidents, athletic directors, administrators, coaches, and student-athletes to move the Pac-12 Conference forward in the coming years." USA Today's Berkowitz notes Scott has received bonuses from 2011 to 2014 ranging between $900K to $1.4M, total comp in '14 was more than $4M. (link, link)
Turnkey Search has been on a roll. There's little disputing that fact as AL.com's Talty reviews the trend lines. Turnkey Prez/CEO Perna awards credit to Managing Director & former Boston College AD DeFilippo who, in the last 15 months, has helped to complete AD searches at Michigan, Minnesota, Bowling Green, Georgia Tech, Alabama & Tennessee, as well as a FB HC search at LSU. Bayou Bengals AD Alleva: "They were fantastic - a huge help. They have years of football experience and know all the coaches and their agents. They were invaluable." Perna believes his firm's differentiators include 1) DeFilippo was never dismissed from an AD post ("There is one search firm now that has two ADs, and between the two ADs they got fired five times."); and, 2) Truly starting from scratch on every process ("We are priced at the higher end because we feel like we are a higher end service. If you want a search firm just to bring you the slate they brought to the last school, you can get that cheaper. Call up Parker, and they'll give you a really affordable price, and they'll just dust off the last search they did, and here's the group of candidates for you."). More. (link)
More comments reported from Notre Dame AD Swarbrick during the "Business of College Sports" panel at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference last week. "I am not troubled at all by the notion of trying to find the right way to allow students who are athletes to capture value for their name, image and likeness. You’ve got to have a group licensing approach like the professional sports unions do. I think there are ways to get there and we’re going to have to explore them in the future." On cost of attendance, "People worried about competitive equity focused on that differential, rather than saying, 'Hey, at our institution, students get this.'" Article includes video & a transcript from the entire panel, which also included Big East Commish Ackerman, Learfield COO Jenkins & NCAA SVP Gavitt. The second link here is a 14-day free trial to all of the MIT Sloan content. (link, link)
Former North Carolina administrator Crowder, who has been squarely involved in the academic saga in Chapel Hill, says in an affidavit she did not create courses in the African & Afro-American Studies department to specifically benefit student-athletes. In documentation sent to the NCAA, "The courses in question were 'generally available to students. The courses were academically rigorous and did not violate any official university policies. And all students were treated the same with respect to all material aspects of the courses." Maybe more importantly, Crowder's attorney indicates she's considering cooperating with the NCAA. (link)
New Tennessee AD Currie has a lot to wrap his head around in Knoxville, says he hasn't watched nearly enough of FB HC Jones' program to have an opinion on where it stands, but he is fully aware, especially given his previous senior-level tenure at UT, of the Vols strong FB heritage & specifically notes the accomplishments of former HC Fulmer. Currie believes the 'Power 5' landscape has never been more competitive, points to the ability to raise money as a key skill & mentions his team's work in Manhattan, as well as Ole Miss AD Bjork as another key example. "It’s a competitive, competitive world, and we have to make sure that we’re truly doing the things across our programs to build toward those things. Coach Dickey talked for years about playing for the championship or biting the butt of the guy who is." (link)
Vegas 16 won't be executed here in a few weeks, though chairman & former UNLV AD Livengood still believes it has a future. "We really thought over the last two weeks we still had a good chance. We felt we needed more confirmation and assurance that teams would be there." Tipping two weeks after the season ends seems to be one sticking point, as is competition from CIT & CBI, plus, "...more and more we were seeing from a contractual sense if you weren’t in the NCAA Tournament or (National Invitation Tournament), you were not in the postseason." (link)
The eight-year $68M campus-wide multimedia rights deal between Clemson & JMI that SBJ's Smith first reported on back in early December finally went public earlier this week. Tigers AD Radakovich: "This partnership will benefit both our campus and our athletics department, and creates new collaboration opportunities throughout the Clemson community. The new eight-year agreement is a significant step forward from the previous, athletics-only arrangement." (link, link)
Sticking with the topic of multimedia rights, the University of Kentucky's Public Relations & Marketing department produced an article & video on longtime industry headliner Host, who recounts how he got into the business, which was a result of a failed political run. Host's first office was above a barber shop, "It started as Jim Host and Associates because I didn’t have any associates, but I wanted to make it sound like a big company." JMI's Stultz on his former colleague, "He had the creativity to create an industry that did not exist before that time." NACDA Executive Director Vecchione: "Jim was blessed with an uncanny vision. He was able to foresee how ideas and trends would play out years down the road, and he used his infectious enthusiasm to make others believe it!" Host: "I had two rules in my business, do not lie or misrepresent about anything. Do not steal 5 cents from the expense account. Those things denote integrity and character." More. (link)
Inside Higher Ed's New reviews the recent history of political lobbying by the powers that be in college athletics with a focal point on the intentions of LEAD1 under longtime Congressman McMillen. "The legislative agenda is set by the presidents, and the institution’s government representatives will be primarily charged to try to implement it. We hope we can help them on college sports-focused issues where our expertise may be needed -- issues like Title IX, drones flying over stadiums, tax reform -- but we will not take the lead. The PAC is purely a way to build relationships." Interesting note from the article, "Specifically, the PAC will focus on members of Congress who are former college athletes. There are 46 of them." NCAA Prez Emmert has previously said the governing body's lobbying efforts won't curtail as a result of LEAD1's voice. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
FIFA boss Infantino continues to say travel policies could impact the bid process for the 2026 World Cup & points specifically to the United States. "It's obvious when it comes to FIFA competitions as well, any team, including the supporters and officials of that team, who qualify for a World Cup need to have access to the country, otherwise there is no World Cup." Important to note that while the bid process will begin next year, a selection won't be made until 2020 for the 2026 event. (link)

The Wichita Eagle's Suellentrop analyzes comments from AAC Commish Aresco, who said earlier this week his league has no interest in adding "multiple basketball schools." Suellentrop thinks the word "multiple" is key as it pertains to the potential candidacy of Wichita State. More from Aresco that would lead one to believe the Shockers could be in the mix, "We have 11 basketball members. I’m not certain what we’ll do in the future. We’re always evaluating our basketball to see if we can make it stronger. Right now, there is nothing going on." (link)
Details from Michigan MBB's travel scare on Wednesday includes the plane finally skidding to a stop not too far from a ravine. HC Beilein "had fumes pouring in his face as helped hold down the inflatable chutes. Once everyone deboarded, he checked with each person individually." Senior student-athlete Walton Jr. sustained a cut that needed stitches & many were shaken by the event. (link); Also, as you likely know, the Wolverines played yesterday in the Big Ten Tournament using their practice uniforms as all bags on the flight are part of the incident's investigation. UM was given the choice of pushing back its game time, but opted to compete close to the original tip time. Michigan ended up beating Illinois, 75-55. (link)
HCs in the News: Contracts for UConn WBB HC Auriemma & MBB HC Ollie show the pair is owed nearly $31M through 2021. $13M for Auriemma & $17.9M for Ollie. (link); UMass AD Bamford the latest leader who will hire a new MBB HC. (link); South Carolina WBB HC Staley will lead the U.S. WBB National Team for the 2017-2020 window. (link); UC Santa Barbara AD McCutcheon is another on the MBB HC hunt. (link); South Alabama AD Erdmann says MBB HC Graves will be back for a fifth season after compiling a 51-79 mark in his first four. (link); Outgoing Missouri MBB HC Anderson will receive $650K per a separation agreement, says after last night's loss to Ole Miss he probably expected to get fired when he took the job given the challenges. (linklink); New Ohio State FB OC & former Indiana HC Wilson believes he wouldn't still be coaching if the claims from Bloomington had merit. (link); Tennessee State WBB HC Inman resigns for personal reasons. (link)
Purdue AD Bobinski characterizes his time as NCAA Tournament Selection Committee chair "one of the greatest professional opportunities I think I've ever had." The formation of the bracket, he says, is much more a "mechanical process" while the at-large selections are where the real conversations take place. As for conspiracy theories and ulterior motives, Bobinski says that's "complete and utter nonsense. ... Is it always going to turn out 100% with what everybody would like it to be? Of course not. Never. But I can tell you no one's cooking the books or doing it in a way that's not above board." Finally, Bobinski says while the top teams tend to stand out "it's in the middle where this becomes an unbelievably murky situation" with lots of repetition, rehashing of debates, and constructing new seeding every day. "And we'd seed 1 through 68, then figure out the bracket. It's not, 'This team feels like a 4 seed, so they should be a 4'. It's very painstakingly detailed."  (link)
The Atlantic's Cole examines the duality of the NCAA and elite universities and posits that the two in many regards are diametrically opposed. Citing the investigation at North Carolina, the cancellation of seasons at Harvard (MSOC), Princeton (S&D) and MBB's "one and done" culture as the result of NBA regulations, Cole posits that highly selective universities "ought to roll back the percentage of recruited athletes" and "withdraw from the NCAA and form their own league since they are not trying to build national championship programs." Cole also contends that the NCAA itself needs a "complete rethinking and overhaul" which focuses more time on "showing off the fantastic women's basketball, volleyball, softball and swimming teams." In short, Cole says it's time for universities to closely examine what purpose their athletics programs are serving in the broader context of a higher learning institution. Full piece. (link)
TV: Last year's March Madness pulled in $1.24B worth of advertising money, the second largest post-season property behind the NFL's Playoffs, which did $1.32B. The impact of FB bowl games equaled $358M. (link); CBS boss Moonves: "Look, the tech giants all want to be involved in the NFL. It's the best product in television. There's going to be a lot of activity. As we head toward that large deal, I think these companies are going to be part of it, [but] I think the NFL still believes in the sanctity of broadcasting. […] There's a reason there's been no Super Bowl on cable, that the three major packages are still on network [TV]. You know, ESPN has ["Monday Night Football"], but I think there's the belief and the knowledge that you can't get 115 million people watching the Super Bowl online." (link); Disney head honcho Iger: "The charge that ESPN is exhibiting significant political bias is just a complete exaggeration." (link); Notable ESPN/CAA/SNL author Miller follows-up his thoughts from Wednesday, "If anybody tells you they know for sure what things will look like decade from now, be very suspicious. Such is this moment in time." (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Southern Miss AD Gilbert discusses the importance of scheduling by comparing it to shaving: "If you don't keep on top of it, you could look up in a few days and have this beard that's a little out of control." Gilbert adds that FB scheduling will demand a high priority and explains that his formula is based on two principles: what is best for the athletic department and what is best for fans. Part of that, he says, means negotiating home-and-home contracts with Power 5 teams, which can be admittedly difficult. "The remaining FBS games, they ought to be regional-based. ... In general, my philosophy at Southern Miss will be to try to get games, both home and away, that are more regional in nature. I think you have to find the balance of scheduling really good opponents that help elevate your program and are games that your fan base wants to see." Senior Assoc. AD Feig adds: "One of the most basic things is market research to find out two things: What does the team we're talking to typically pay? Then, two, what is the market nationally like in that particular year? ... I suspect I'll make 20 or more calls to different institutions before a deal gets done." (link)
Minnesota AD Coyle tells the Minnesota Daily student newspaper he's proud of the turnaround in MBB. "I'm talking academically, socially and athletically. They've worked so hard, and it's great to see that hard work pay off with the success they've had." Coyle also notes the excitement surrounding FB as spring practice gets underway with new HC Fleck and comments on reports that Fleck communicated with a former player at Western Michigan (before the announcement that UM would self-report a minor violation). "I can tell you, when information comes across our desk, we want to make sure we understand what that information is and most importantly, we react on any information that comes across our desk. Again, we didn’t see any recruiting of student athletes. We’re not recruiting anyone from Western Michigan and we move forward from there." Full interview. (link)
Eastern Michigan continues its fundraising momentum, gets a $500K commitment from former Board of Regents Chair Incarnati to go toward facility upgrades & community engagement efforts. It's the third largest cash gift in department history. Incarnati is a former EMU FB student-athlete & is currently CEO & Prez of the McLaren Health Care Corporation. (link); Eagles AD Lyke also rolls-out the new "The Oak Society" leadership giving group that will celebrate donors who have committed an active pledge of $25K or more, done $100K or more over their lifetime or have "a documented legacy of commitment to EMU Athletics." (link)
The California State University System may have to pay almost $2M for former San Diego State WBB HC Burns' legal fees and expenses that would bring the total bill from the wrongful termination lawsuit to $6M. Burns' legal team had requested $6.89M. Last year a jury awarded $3.35M to Burns, a ruling which SDSU is in the process of appealing. (link)
Around Higher Ed: San Diego State Prez Hirshman will exit for the same role at Stevenson University (DIII). Hirshman will start in July & the move takes him back to the Baltimore area as he previously served as Provost at UMBC. (link); Virginia brass may consider a non-traditional leader as the new Prez in Charlottesville. Board of Visitor's member Murray, who is also on the search committee, "It is a growing trend and it may eventually become a majority of university presidents [who come] from the business and private world." (link); Mississippi's House of Representatives voted 57-56 "to withhold proposed tax exemptions to public universities that refuse to fly the flag." Right now, all eight public universities in the state have stopped flying the flag to do its racist roots. However, House Ways & Means Committee Chair Smith believes the provision will be eliminated from the final version of a larger bill. (link)
Also Noticed: NCAA Prez Emmert has donated the remaining $49K of a $100K commitment he previously made to Washington when he was Prez in Seattle. (link); CBS will use the Luther Vandross version of 'One Shining Moment' for this year's MBB Tourney. (link); This sounds like an interesting read on NC State AD Yow, "Executive Voice: Debbie Yow revives NCSU in a changing sports era." But, it's behind a paywall, so I can't get to it. Maybe you can. (link); Check out UTSA AD Hickey doing a jig after her MBB side beat Western Kentucky to open the C-USA Tourney. (link); With the Poinsettia Bowl no longer, San Diego County Credit Union will now be the lead sponsor for the Holiday Bowl. (link); The NCAA & Getty Images did a deal. (link); A couple of pictures of upgrades to Washington's Baseball locker room & lounge. (link); From Law360: "With the yearly 'March Madness' tournament less than a week away, the National Collegiate Athletic Association filed a trademark infringement lawsuit Wednesday over online fantasy games called 'April Madness.' (link); Facebook copies more of Snapchat, launches Messenger Day. (link)
