Spring is here and the outdoor season of activities will soon be upon us. I look forward to reading in the next mid-monthly newsletter how our large group of cross country skiers gets on in Norway at the end of this month. Please bounce around the items below to find something to keep you healthy and active.

1. RUNNING

GET FIT, HAVE FUN, MEET NEW PEOPLE!

BEGINNER’S RUNNING SESSIONS
This taster session is aimed at anyone aged 18+ who wants to try running.
It is a free beginner running taster session for all fitness levels and abilities with follow up support to join a local running group or club near to you. Why not bring a friend or family member?

Guide runners will be present to support people with a visual impairment if required.

WINDRUSH AQUATHLON
Swim 500m in the beautiful open air Brockwell Lido, then run 5km on a traffic free course around the lovely adjacent Brockwell Park. There are some hills but your efforts will be rewarded with views of the City of London and the friendliest volunteers to cheer you on. Want to make it a family day out? No problem, we have races for children aged 8 upwards too, with distances varying according to age. The adult race is also part of the London League.

2. METRO NATIONAL OPEN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

17TH JUNE 2017

Metro Blind Sport – Welcomes athletes of all ages and experience, throughout the UK, to join us in our annual competition. We hope you are all in training, especially those who attend their local Park Run on Saturday mornings across London boroughs and beyond. Come along and run, jump or throw at Mile End Stadium with your friends/family, all races are electronically timed.

Entry forms will be available later this month on the Metro website www.metroblindsport.org. Help us celebrate our 41st year by supporting these games. The event is FREE to all participants along with t-shirts and catering. We have already received enquiries from Royal Blind School Edinburgh so if you have VI friends outside of London make sure they come down and enjoy the day.

BRITISH CYCLING DISABILITY HUB SESSIONS
British Cycling Disability Hubs are sessions delivered on a monthly basis at traffic-free facilities across the country to enable riders to have a fun, get fit and improve in a safe environment. Whether you are a complete novice, a seasoned rider, or somewhere in between, there is something on offer to meet your needs. A range of adapted bikes (including tandems and handcycles) are available for use during the session to support your riding.

Announce dates for para-cycling activities in London. The sessions are coaching sessions to help riders develop the techniques, knowledge, fitness and confidence.

SENSE INCLUSIVE CYCLING
Ever tried it? Ever wanted to?

These sessions are accessible and a great opportunity for anyone with a sensory impairment or complex needs to come along to one of the FREE sessions and give cycling a go. It doesn't matter whether you're a cycling pro or a complete novice, Wheels for Wellbeing have so many different types of accessible bikes suitable for everyone. Whether the bike is powered by your legs, your arms, a friend or there are even bikes that your wheelchair can attach to, we would love for you to come along and give it a go. 2 Instructors will be at each session to support you if you need it. Friends, family and support workers are all very welcome.

Access sport in partnership with Hammersmith BMX club launched a brand new WEEKLY inclusive BMX session called Wingz BMX.

INCLUSIVE SWIMMING sessions are accessible to anyone with a sensory impairment or complex need in London who is over 14 years old, if you’re happy to travel there we are happy to have you come along and join in.

The sessions are run in partnership with GLL Better Leisure who have some great staff lined up to meet you all. Novice, intermediate and those verging on moderate swimming abilities will be able to receive coaching; if you are a more experienced swimmer you are still more than welcome to come along and join in but priority will be for less experienced swimmers. Friends, family and support workers are all very welcome

INCLUSIVE COACHING WEEK PROGRAMME, STARTING ON 20 MARCH.

Are you involved in sports on a professional or voluntary basis? Do you have an interest in supporting disabled people to take part in sports and physical activity? Then look out for a series of FREE courses taking place as part of Motivate East’s Inclusive Coaching Week Programme, starting on 20 March.

There are a range of workshops on offer, each of which will be delivered by disabled people with expertise in the relevant field.

The workshops are suitable for sports coaches, sports and physical activity providers, aspiring sports leaders, volunteers and support workers.

Places are being offered on a first come, first served basis. Right to write is a new writers’ meetup for Visually Impaired people who want to share their writing or be inspired to write their own work. The meet up group is a friendly environment where we can talk about our ideas, have our work read, gain group feedback/encouragement, and learn more through trips to the theatre.

Membership 2016/2017 – How to Join.

A very warm welcome to all those members who have joined recently.

We now have over 300 members and it’s thanks to you that our events are running so successfully with your support. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like any help in taking away barriers and obstacles which prevent you from participating in any activity.

If you have any friends or family members who want to join, see below:
Membership for adults over 18 years is £5.00 per annum and £50.00 for life membership and free membership for under 18’s.

Joining Metro online saves a considerable amount of administration time and cost to our charity.
Your details are then correctly stored and you will receive the 2 monthly newsletters and all Newsflashes in the format of your choice.

Your 12 months’ membership will start on the date you joined online and the computer system will send you an automatic thank you and a reminder in 12 months’ time for renewal.

Payment options below:

Pay By Bank Transfer - BACS.
It is extremely important when using BACS that you use your name as the reference at the time of transfer as this will show up on the bank statement and then we can manually update your details onto our membership system.
