Two Houses One Heart

March 2017

Our Journey Continues...

Where we are
To date $4.0 million has been committed toward our $4.8 million goal to build and furnish two convenient, ADA compliant, energy and maintenance efficient Cottages.  This includes many generous gifts, both cash and in-kind.  Recall, $1M of this goal is to build our operating endowment to help ensure fiscal stability when the two Cottages are in operation and we have that covered. The remainder, $3.8 million, was budgeted to build and furnish the new Cottages
What’s happening now
WOW!  Exciting progress on the Henson Avenue Cottage is being made, spurred by the Home Builders Association of Western Michigan (HBAWMI) and their members and friends.  If you are in the area, stop by and see it…you can’t miss it.  The roof is on and the windows are installed.  Plumbing and electrical rough-ins are nearly complete!  It’s really beginning to look like a Cottage!

The House touches people from far and wide and construction help is coming from far and wide as well.  HBAWMI has received product/material donations from both national and local suppliers and donations of labor from as far away as Mount Pleasant!  Every single donation helps defray the cost of construction.
In addition to the Henson St. construction progress, we also launched a new Two Houses One Heart campaign video.  The video describes what we do and why we need two new Cottages. A special thank you to our partner hospital CEOs Kathy Young and Frank Sardone, Executive Director Judy Markusse Paget, Campaign Co-Chair Lisa Carriveau and our guests for their role in making the video great!

Where we are going
Next stop…South Burdick Street!  Bronson Hospital and the House have agreed on a site on Burdick Street just south of Vine Street.  We hope to begin construction in the late summer-early fall of this year.  We are thrilled to kick off planning for this location!  All that said, we still have $800,000 more to raise and with your help, we’re going to “git ‘er done”.

How we are going to get there
Grant writing and individual and business appeals will continue.  We also seek in-kind donations (materials, services and labor) and offer other giving opportunities:
  • Local designers are invited to design and help furnish specific areas of the Cottages.  If you are interested or know someone who may be, contact Peggy Rohs, 269-321-1791 or pegrohs@gmail.com.
  • Gift registries have been set up at Target and AmazonSmile featuring items on our furnishings list.  There is also an appliance wish list containing items we need from George’s Appliance.  Our thanks to Borgess and Bronson nurses who already started shopping!  We invite anyone, group, or organization to go shopping for the House!
  • Commemorative paving bricks will be sold at  $60 each.  There is a limit of three (3) lines, fourteen (14) characters, spaces, punctuation per line. To learn more, call the office at 269-341-7811 or visit our website.
In the meantime…

Operational funding is always needed, so next up is the April 21 Tasting on the Town, our annual fundraiser with proceeds supporting operations.  Tickets are $75. Sponsorship opportunities are available.  Plan to be a part of this fun event.
