RAPHAEL GIMENES & AS MONTANHAS DE SOM

It is a great pleasure for me as an independent record company, to introduce you to the young upcoming Brazilian star, Raphael Gimenes. He impressed the musicians from Danish Radios Big Band when working with them, and he straight away impressed me when he wrote me for a collaboration. I think I went one minute into the first song on his album, when I responded with a big YES.
Raphael's music is mesmerizing, magic, calming, deep, subtle, rich, personal, imaginative, detailed, elegant, indispensable. It reminds me of my first love with The Beatles and my first loves with Jobim and Gilberto. The album is all what an album should be: A musical experience!
Carolina Vallejo, One World Records 2016

"The finest Brazilian album coming out this year is from Denmark and by Raphael Gimenes & As Montanhas de De Som. What an incredibly beautiful, timeless super album, with rich arrangements, and full of beautiful Brazilian nostalgia. The songs are all equally beautiful, the arrangements are super rich and the way the album is made up entirely convincing. Unbelievable that this is a debut. It is an absolutely phenomenal debut’ Dick Hovenga, www.writteninmusic.com

'Raphael Gimenes & As Montanhas de Som' is the debut album by the Europe-based Brazilian singer, guitarist, and composer, who won 3rd prize from DPA & Danish Radios Big Band's Award 'New Jazz Name of the Year 2016'

The music blends Brazilian folklore with classical music, ambitious harmonies with psychedelic effects, and African-Brazilian rhythms with classical guitar. Raphael’s music is atmospheric, elegant and at times melancholic. It is a concept album, in which stories about longing, love, hardship, and hope, flow into one another, like a theater play with its different acts.

The opening track, ‘A Serra das Russas’, is inspired by the folk music of the Brazilian northeast, and deals with his past struggle as an immigrant. ‘O Último Jacarandá’ has complex time signatures and harmonies, paying tribute to the rich but endangered nature of Brazil.

The album is produced with a clear reference to the sound of the 60’s and 70’s Brazilian musical highlights, which can be heard in the overdubbed and subtle vocals. More than anything, it tells Gimenes’ own story - that of a of a young man who left his country as a teenager, and now rediscovers his homeland through his music.

The album's core band, As Montanhas de Som (The Mountains of Sound), is formed by international musicians, who each contribute to the music with their different backgrounds. The Danish string group "Who Killed Bambi" colors some of the tracks in epic fashion, while the effects created by Gimenes' bird whistles and percussion instruments lead the listener deep into the Brazilian mountain ranges and rain forests.
