An afternoon of presentations, performances and Deep Listening
On Sunday, March 19 from 3 to 5pm at Kingston City Hall

“Through Pauline Oliveros and Deep Listening I finally know what harmony is...It’s about the pleasure of making music.”
— John Cage, 1989

Kingston, NY, March 10, 2017 - On Sunday, March 19th from 3 to 5 pm the City of Kingston’s Arts Commission will host a commemoration of the life and work of Pauline Oliveros at City Hall’s Council Chambers followed by a reception from 5 to 6 pm hosted by the Kingston Midtown Arts District (MAD). This intimate afternoon of performances, presentations and Deep Listening will include many of Oliveros’ friends, students and collaborators as well as representatives from the City of Kingston and Ulster County.

Pauline Oliveros was an internationally acclaimed composer, performer and humanitarian and founder of Deep Listening Institute who touched countless artistic lives. In a career that spanned five decades, she was a tireless advocate for making and listening to new sounds. As a pioneer of electronic music and inventor of transformative listening methods, Oliveros changed the way music is made and conceived for several generations of musicians.

A resident of Kingston with her creative partner and spouse Ione since 1986, Oliveros was always deeply interested in the arts and artists of the city.  She worked with many of Kingston’s leaders (notably Mayor TR Gallo and Mayor Shayne Gallo) to foster the arts community. In the 1990s, Mayor TR Gallo recognized the Deep Listening Institute (DLI) as an anchor for the arts in the historic Rondout, where the organization produced 10 years of international arts programming with outdoor festivals and concerts. Along with many other arts leaders and businesses, Oliveros and Ione, Artistic Director of DLI, inspired Mayor Shayne Gallo to create the Kingston Arts Commission. Oliveros’ last public appearance in Kingston was this past October during the MAD launch party. Ione exclaims that “it was extremely gratifying to us both to see the community efforts come to fruition in Midtown and to see so many good friends and collaborators celebrating together. Pauline was deeply moved by the event.”

For those inspired by Oliveros or curious to learn more about her beautiful life and work, the March 19th commemoration of her life and work will provide an opportunity to learn, reflect and listen. Contributors include Mayor Steve Noble, Ione, Peter Wetzler, Susie Ibarra, Richard Teitelbaum, Linda Mary Montano, Deep Listening Certificate Holders and members of the Center for Deep Listening at Rensselaer, as well as many of Oliveros' longest musical collaborators.
