From the PTA President
Yorktown PTA March Meeting Has Been Rescheduled for March 20
The Yorktown PTA meeting on the calendar for last Monday was cancelled due to the snow. We will now hold this meeting on Monday, March 20, 7:30-8:30 p.m., in the library.
In addition to reviewing general PTA business, the meeting will include a vote by the general membership on a nominating committee that will identify a slate of candidates for the 2017-2018 PTA Officers.
Next year’s Yorktown PTA officers will be elected at the May 8 meeting. Once the nominating committee is established, more information will be available for anyone interested in serving as a PTA officer and the school community at large.
We hope you can join us for this meeting—
Kathy Mimberg

TACKLING BIG NEEDS WITHIN ARLINGTON'S LIMITED SPACE
Roundtable Discussions: Tackling Big Needs Within Arlington’s Limited Space
Yorktown families are invited to participate in the Joint Facilities Advisory Commission (JFAC) small interactive roundtable discussion about the unique opportunities that Arlington County has to acquire new land for various uses. Arlington has limited space for urgent needs such as schools, parks, recreational facilities, and essential operational and support services such as school and ART bus parking, equipment and storage, and contractor staging. The roundtables offer residents the opportunity to help inform JFAC on their recommendations to the County and School Boards, including specific tasks related to the Buck property on N. Quincy Street, a related potential land exchange involving property on Shirlington Road, and the Virginia Hospital Center’s Carlin Springs/Lee Highway/16th St. North sites. Registration is free and required. The schedule and register are available here: https://commissions.arlingtonva.us/jfac/
APS FINE ARTS APPRENTICE PROGRAM
The APS Fine Arts Apprentice Program provides specialized experiences beyond the regular art, music and drama curriculum for selected high school students (rising 10th, 11th, or 12th graders). Applications for the 2017 - 2018 school year are due on Tuesday, March 28, 2017. To watch the Online Apprentice Information Presentation visit the Fine Arts Apprentice webpage https://www.apsva.us/arts-education-overview/fine-arts-apprentice-program/. Students selected for the Apprentice Program receive a pass/fail grade and a 1/2 credit for a minimum of 75 hours of arts experience outside the school course requirements. These opportunities take place outside the school day and are often offered in the evenings and on weekends. Students are able to select opportunities of interest that work with their school commitments and extra-curricular activities.
