Foundation Aid

From Assembly Member Robert Carroll
  • Foundation Aid is the formula used to determine funding for school districts after the NYS Court of Appeals ruling in 2006, which found that New York State was violating students constitutional right to a “sound and basic education” by leaving schools without the funding necessary. Foundation Aid accounts for Teachers, Para-Professionals, Principals, and other operating expenses associated with running our schools. In accordance with the Campaign for Fiscal Equity, New York City is actually owed roughly $9B in Foundation Aid in the upcoming FY 2017/2018 budget.
  • Governor Cuomo is only allocating $7.3B in Foundation Aid for New York City Schools, which means, we will be shorted $1.7B in critical Foundation Aid. Further, Governor Cuomo is seeking to repeal the Foundation Aid formula and turn back the clock on funding our public schools.
  • Foundation Aid was designed to create an equitable district by district funding structure so that all of our children are able to receive a sound and basic education. In his attempt to repeal the foundation aid formula from Education Law, the Governor will exacerbate the inequities in districts across our city and I, along with Speaker Heastie and my Majority Colleagues will fight to make sure that New York City Schools get the Foundation Aid to which we are entitled.
  • I urge you to sign this petition and call the Governor at 518-474-8390 and tell him to fully fund our New York City Public Schools.

On International Women's Day, March 8th, women and allies will act together for equity, justice and the human rights of women and all gender-oppressed people, through a one-day demonstration of economic solidarity.

When millions of us stood together in January, we saw clearly that our army of love greatly outnumbers that of fear, greed and hatred. Let's raise our voices together again, to say that women’s rights are human rights, regardless of a woman’s race, ethnicity, religion, immigration status, sexual identity, gender expression, economic status, age or disability.

ACLU ACTION
From the ACLU:

At the ACLU, we know it’s important that we not only defend our civil liberties in the courtroom, but also in the streets. That’s why we’re kicking off our effort to organize the grassroots resistance to Trump’s unconstitutional agenda: People Power.

If you don’t already know, we’re hosting an important Resistance Training livestream on March 11. At the event, we’ll be unveiling a specific action plan. Then we’ll get to work to defend our communities from the worst abuses of the Trump administration.

More than 1,800 volunteers nationwide are hosting local events to show the stream. The most important thing you can do right now is attend a local event. They all start at 4:30pm ET/3:30pm CT/2:30pm MT/1:30pm PT. Here are some nearby events:

ACLU People Power Action Event - March 11
71 Cranberry street, Brooklyn, NY (1.2 mi away)

ACLU People Power Action Event - March 11
110 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, NY (1.2 mi away)

ACLU People Power Action Event - March 11
143 22nd St, Brooklyn, NY (1.9 mi away)

You can also find more events near you on our map.

Once you’re signed up to attend one of these local events, the next step is to invite your friends and family. The bigger this movement grows, the more powerful we’ll be when standing up to Trump and his administration.

The survival of our most cherished freedoms is at stake. We know that the strength of our movement comes from the people. And it’s going to take millions of us standing together in solidarity to overcome the challenges ahead. The work starts in earnest in just six days.

The People's Climate March will occur in Washington DC on Saturday, April 29.  Like the recent Women’s March, the People’s Climate March aims to galvanize a broad constituency of people to demand that politicians and corporations take action on the urgent problem of climate change.  Immediate action is essential to protecting our environment as well as human health and well-being.  The last People's Climate March was in New York City in September 2014; an estimated 400,000 people attended.  Given the current political climate, we are seeking to have a greater turnout in 2017!

Buses are already scheduled to transport people from various location in New York City to Washington, DC.  These buses will leave early in the morning, and return to NYC after the March.  You can purchase a ticket here. Tickets are sold on a sliding scale, ranging from $20-$100. The real cost of the ticket is $55; the sliding scale enables those with more financial resources to subsidize the cost for others.  Please buy your tickets early! Early registration will enable 350Brooklyn and other organizations to charter additional buses.
