Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that the business plan for Health Innovation Manchester (HInM) has now been approved by the HInM board. Additionally, the HInM business case has been acknowledged by the Greater Manchester Health & Social Care Partnership. The business case supports the initial set-up of Health Innovation Manchester, and has secured development funding for the recruitment of a CEO and for work around the change management process. We are very focused on achieving some of the quick wins set out in this case – targeting some of the disease-specific improvement work already in our portfolio.

The creation of HInM is being led by Rowena Burns, Chief Executive of Manchester Science Partnerships and Executive Chair of HInM, and is being supported by an executive steering group, which includes representatives from both GM AHSN and MAHSC.

We look forward to sharing more about Health Innovation Manchester's progress over the coming months.

Managing Director

Supporting a digital solution to diabetes foot health

Entec Health Ltd, a Surrey-based healthcare innovation company, has successfully engaged via GM AHSN’s Innovation Nexus with two lead clinicians at Central Manchester University Hospitals Foundation Trust (CMFT).

Entec’s Silhouette® product enables rapid escalation and de-escalation of patients with diabetic foot ulcers to and from secondary care, and increases accuracy and objectivity of assessments through use of 3D wound imaging technology. This will reduce the number of follow-up appointments taking place in hospitals, by enabling remote review of patients’ wounds in their community.

RESEARCH & INFORMATICS

Developing national outpatient letter standards

As more care and a wider range of specialist services are delivered out of hospital, the importance of well-structured outpatient letters is essential to good communications between clinicians and patients. They are the main method of contact and communication between hospital staff and GPs and communicate to the patient a record of the consultation and decisions. They are often the sole record of the consultation held by the outpatient department and hospital.

The PRSB are carrying out a project to improve continuity of care by helping clinicians to communicate relevant information more quickly, reducing transcription errors by enabling re-use of key data in the GP system and producing better information for audit and research by carrying information in coded format, where appropriate.

Draft PRSB standards for outpatient letters have now been developed following an evidence review and a recent workshop held on 19th January 2017 with patients, carers and healthcare professionals. As a PRSB liaison member, GM AHSN would now like to invite you to participate in a consultation on these proposals. Your feedback at this stage will ensure that the resulting recommendations are practical and fit for purpose. We would be very grateful if you would complete this survey and circulate widely among your colleagues.
