 The People's Greenway
A great president once laid out the sacred compact for our government to be "of the people, by the people, for the people." That high standard, spoken so eloquently by Abraham Lincoln in 1863, is a goal for us at the East Coast Greenway Alliance as well.
By its public nature, the Greenway is "for the people" — bringing communities together now at a time of political polarization. It's also "of the people" and "by the people": Our project is thriving because volunteers are becoming leaders in the greenway movement. Read more

Kevin Hicks (pictured here, center) leads youth from the Chapel Hill, NC, area on two-week bicycle tours of historical sites. He also volunteers for bike events in the Raleigh-Durham area and serves on the East Coast Greenway's Advisory Board. Read more.

Farewell to John Andrews, a 'real trail champion'
John Andrews, who founded the Eastern Trail Alliance in 1997, died last month at age 79. Andrews was a tireless advocate and fundraiser for the 65-mile Eastern Trail, which stretches from South Portland to Kittery, Maine, and is a key segment of the East Coast Greenway. In 2012, a bridge on the trail over U.S. Route 1 in Saco was named the “John R. Andrews Bridge” in his honor. Read more.

 Congratulations to Barbara Preston of Rocky Hill, NJ, who shot this scene of the East Coast Greenway crossing Lake Carnegie in Princeton, NJ. Preston walks the Greenway daily with Rory, her Australian Shepherd. Normally, she says, this bridge is full of fishermen, and she can watch Princeton's crew team practicing on the water. Read more.

After tragic loss, Popper plans 450-mile Greenway walk
 Two summers from now, Jennifer Popper plans to set out from Nomahegan Park in Cranford, New Jersey, and walk close to 450 miles along the East Coast Greenway to Gouldsboro, Maine. It’s a remarkable goal and a fitting tribute to her husband, Michael Popper, who died last summer during a kayak accident in which Jennifer nearly died as well. With her walk, she's raising funds for the East Coast Greenway and FreeWalkers. Read more
