Sociology Undergraduate Awards

Best Paper Award
Have you written an awesome paper for one of your Sociology classes in Spring 2016 or Fall 2016? Submit it for a chance to win!
Jane Addams Sociology in Practice Award
Submit a 1-2 page statement reflecting on what you have accomplished, explaining how sociological thinking enhanced your understanding of a social issue or problem that you were involved in. Consider in your reflection what you learned from the experience.
Meghan K. Beebe Senior Speaker Award
This award recognizes an enthusiastic sociology student who has strong writing and public speaking skills that will speak on behalf of sociology at the SBS Senior Celebration Commencement Ceremony. Submit a 1-minute speech, illustrating the impact that sociology has had in your personal life, or describing sociology as an inspirational outlet for making a difference and impacting the lives of others.
C. Wright Mills Award for Sociological Imagination
Submit a response (3 pages or less) answering the following question – “How has sociology affected your college experience?” You might approach the essay by asking yourself: Has your point of view changed because of sociology? Has a major in sociology affected what you thought you wanted to do with your life? Was there an eye-opening, aha! moment in your sociology undergraduate career?

The Feinberg lecture series continues this semester. March 27th at 4, come hear the talk "Pelican Bay Prison and the Rise of Long-Term Solitary Confinement" by Keramet Reiter, assistant professor in the Department of Criminology, Law and Society and at the School of Law at the University of California, Irvine.
Upcoming Course Information
Registration for Spring CPE courses that begin in March is now open.
We have two classes that are relevant to CJ students:
Final Summer course information wlll be up on Monday March 13th. Sociology is offering the following SEVEN classes that are of interest to CJ students (please note this is not absolutely, officially final until the 13th):
Fall on-campus course information will be posted on SPIRE March 20th
Careers & Internships
Remember, our new CJ program director is now seeing students. Come meet Bob Ryan on Wednesdays from 5:30-7 PM to discuss summer or fall internships in the field.
You can also talk to Sociology advisors about course planning and questions about the certificate. Stop into peer advising for advice on classes, or make an appointment to come in and talk to a staff advisor. Remember, we can also do phone appointments!
CJ Student Spotlight
First in a series of reflections from current students about their CJ experience:
My name is Connor Lein, and I am a junior transfer student studying Sociology. At my previous college I graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice. I am currently applying for a job opportunity at the UMass Police Department. I heard about the opportunity to apply through the UMass police. My advice for you is that Criminal Justice has been such positive experience in my life and don’t hesitate any longer! Get involved in CJ! It has given me many new and special opportunities to participate in. The best advice I can give you about getting an internship opportunity or even a job, is to talk to some type law enforcement official. This may seem weird but they will give you a straight forward answer and how to get the opportunity you are looking for. I was able to participate in a ride-along because I talked to an officer about it.
