Solutions for the Human Side of Business
A Message from Jonathan Creaghan
Over the last couple of years I’ve had numerous requests from people and past clients wanting to access more of our insights and observations on Life, Leadership, and How the World Works. So we are making available our 25 years of tools and knowledge through this newsletter, publishing LinkedIn articles, posting on our website blogs, and the upcoming "Leader Library". We will also be introducing "Motivational Mondays" where you can ask me anything regarding succeeding with the Human Side of your Business.
In this edition, we explore working with Millennials, not just how they are different, rather how they are on the leading edge of a shift of workplace values. Also found in this newsletter is a link to a 2016 TOP 10 article we wrote for an International Business Magazine on Business "Growers".
Information on how to access the "Leader Library" and "Motivational Mondays" coming soon

The Surprising Thing about Millennials... well not just Millennials

We’ve all heard about the challenges of working with Millennials in the work place, but what if this wasn’t true?

Though we like to categorize people, it is becoming clear in business literature that there is actually a blending of needs and values between the generations. So what the Millennials are looking for in work are also been sought by GenXers and late Baby Boomers. This is because workplaces are evolving, technology is playing a larger role and people are having to adapt to different ways of making a living.  So though this article's points are specifically focused on the up coming generation, they are just as relevant to how established staff want to be treated and lead.

Our position, based on working for many years with people across generations, is that though people of different generations  work differently, there are universal values shared across all groups. For instance how workers view productivity and what constitutes a work day varies across generations. The values listed below are common:
  • Being listened to
  • Wanting to make a difference
  • Feeling included
  • Celebrating successes
If you are a Boomer or an "Xer" who leads the upcoming generation the work by Jason Dorsey, a researcher on Millennials, might be helpful. He has discovered that there are two streams of Millennial workers and a split within the cohort occurs around age 30. The first stream is hard working, will put in long hours and is outcome oriented. The other stream will struggle with career and purpose for awhile longer. The latter are the ones that people typically complain about.

Go to "Check Out on Youtube" in the right panel of this newsletter to access some clips by Jason Dorsey, Simon Sinek, and Chris Collins experts on working with the upcoming generation.

We will be leading a talk on strategies for working with Millennials, dates to be published in future editions.

Cheers,
Jonathan Creaghan
