Today we are sharing a few of our favorite picks for Spring gardening!

Don't be afraid to make your working wardrobe as colorful as your garden! Deb absolutely loves her Rosie's Workwear overalls; their washability and the built-in knee pads are perfect for gardening, not to mention they are available in a variety of fun colors.

Flannel shirts are a timeless workwear go-to. Take this opportunity to pump up the color of your flannel to complement a pair of floral gloves. And if you're looking to treat yourself, go for those pink boots you've always wanted. Functional, fashionable, and durable.

Finally, don't forget to top the look off with a stylish straw hat, and add your own signature flair with a colorful ribbon. Now grab your tools and trusty wagon, because you're ready for a day in the garden.

One of the many beautiful aspects about having a garden is, no two are alike.

Whether you prefer an organic English style garden with controlled chaos or pride yourself on a well manicured contemporary space, we believe you can NEVER have too much lavender!

Adding a special piece of art or a sign to your garden can be fun way to create personal style to your space. Will you be growing your own vegetables this year?

And, if you haven't already, brave the rain and plant a few beautiful dahlia bulbs. They are truly a gift that will feed your soul all summer long.

Heather!

Heather, an Iowa native, earned her Bachelor's Degree in Fashion Design from Chicago's IADT in 2005. One short year after graduating, she and (now husband) Daniel, ventured cross-country to Portland where they, as well as their two cats and yellow lab, have called home for the past 11 years. Made On 23rd feels lucky that Heather joined our team of skilled artists; she has a diverse background in design ranging from screen printing to owning her own Etsy shop, Squeak Designs, which specializes in accessories. Her consistent hard work, and ever entertaining conversations throughout the work day are a few things that make our studio so special here at Made On 23rd.

Just for Fun
The blackberry bushes are about the only thing that are loving the relentless rain we have been having in Washington. But it's not all bad! Plentiful blackberries mean spring and summer pies, cobblers, and of course, scones!

We stumbled upon this recipe from the Half Baked Harvest and it screams Spring! Blackberry lavender scones, too good not to share with all of you...

Blackberry Lavender Scones

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter grated on a box grater just like cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk + more for brushing
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
  • 1/2-1 cup white chocolate chips

Lavender Glaze

  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon dried lavender use 2 teaspoons for a less intense flavor
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add the butter and toss with the flour. Add the egg, buttermilk and vanilla. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix. Fold in the blackberries and white chocolate chips.
  3. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and then pat into 1-inch-thick square. Cut the dough into 2 inch squares. Place pieces, about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets. Brush each piece with buttermilk.
  4. Bake until golden brown, 15 to 18 minutes, rotating sheets halfway through. Let the scones cool slightly and then drizzle with the lavender glaze (see below). Serve warm with butter.

Lavender Glaze

  1. Place the milk and butter in a small saucepan and set over medium heat. Cook until the milk is steaming, but not boiling. Remove from the heat and stir in the lavender. Cover and steep 5 minutes. Strain the milk through a fine mesh strainer and discard the lavender. Stir in the the powdered sugar, adding water if needed to thin the glaze. Drizzle the glaze over each scone
