Commitment. We need it.

Since September of this school year, we have had over SIX HUNDRED people attend an orientation and tutor with San Diego Refugee Tutoring. But, somehow, we were short 15 tutors last Tuesday. We need approximately 60 or 65 tutors per Tuesday and Thursday and for some odd reason, we are having a hard time reaching that. Perhaps some students completed their community service hours. Others of you come during the days and help at Ibarra. But, we are asking each of you for a commitment to our kids. It not only helps us reach a 1:1 ratio and keeps our program running smoothly, it is the best chance you'll have at actually getting to know one of the students well. Also, please let us know if you RSVP and then can't make it. Kids wait for you and we hold your spot. We need to open spots if you can't come. Thanks so much to all of those who come regularly!

Please go RSVP now on our website now! We tutor until March 23rd and then will be on a month long break until April 27th.

Tutoring Tips for the Old & New

What do we do when our middle schooler's or high schooler's homework is way too hard?
We have many siblings of our elementary school students who come to tutoring regularly and bring homework that is simply WAY over their heads. The ESL programs in middle school and high school in our neighborhood have been cut dramatically and the students are getting very little instruction at their levels. This is both tragic and complicated. Many of these kids want nothing more than to do the homework they have been assigned. But, it could take hours to teach the skills needed prior to being able to actually do the assignments they are given. Our recommendation is to tread lightly. These children have very fragile self-esteem. In fact, some are dropping out of school altogether. So, perhaps you can spend a small amount of time attempting part of the homework. Or, you can ask them other questions about what they are doing in English or math class and try to find a book/game/activity that pertains to that topic. Writing sentences, paragraphs, etc. is always a good idea. Reading to them is also time never wasted. Spending time conversing is also a good tool for them as they work to communicate in English. And, never hesitate to flag down a lead teacher for ideas. Try to be as respectful as you can when you communicate about your student aloud. Thanks for entering this educational dilemma with us.
Book Giveaway: Thurs., Mar. 23rd!

We are preparing for the end of the trimester on Thursday, March 23rd during tutoring, when we have a large Book Giveaway for all of our students! Our goal is to get literacy materials into the homes of our students, especially over their month-long spring break! So, please start collecting new and gently used books for our kids and bring them to tutoring with you starting this week! We prefer preschool to 4th grade level books.

There will be no tutoring from March 27th through April 26th due to a month long spring break. Tutoring resumes on Thursday, April 27th.

From Patti:
Tonight they had the opportunity to find a painting from a Master Contemporary Artist and to use wonderful watercolor pencils, donated by artist/educator Rivian Butikofer to create their own work.
