MARIN ULTRA CHALLENGE

Hi, <<First Name>>!

Inside Trail's next event, the
Marin Ultra Challenge, is coming up this Saturday, March 11, 2017. The MUC is our premier Marin County trail race, delivering ample hills and sweeping descents. March 11th marks the 6th edition of this tour of some of Marin’s best trails. Meticulous effort went into the design of each course for the MUC; all three distances are physically demanding and exceptionally beautiful. The journey begins at Rodeo Beach, then traverses the Marin Headlands, Stinson-facing Mt. Tamalpais and Muir Woods, exhibiting a range of terrain, from exposed fire-roads with incredible coastal and inland views to tight, technical single-track with redwood canopies. You’ll quickly realize why Marin County has become the ideal trail runner’s destination.

Due to the recent rain throughout Northern California, there have been changes made to the Start/Finish location as well as to portions of the course. Please make sure to read through this entire email, as it details all of the new information about race logistics and the festivities leading up to, and after, the event.

Of course, we couldn't host an event such as this without the support our incredible volunteers. Please be sure to thank everyone who has taken the time out of their schedules to help ensure you have a safe and fun race experience.

We're looking forward to seeing you in Marin this weekend!

RACE DAY PARKING

Runner parking is prohibited at Rodeo Beach. Free parking is available in a number of lots nearby within the GGNRA. Primary parking will be available at the Annex lot near the Marine Mammal Center (.4 miles away from the Start/Finish). WEATHER REPORT FOR MARIN COUNTY

It looks as though we are going to have perfect running conditions on race day! The forecast looks great, but this is the Bay Area and you never really know what you’re going to get.  We recommend that everyone running carry at least 20 ounces of water with them while they run.

Aid Station Information
Aid Stations will be located every 3.6 - 6.6 miles along the course. Expect to find variety at all of our aid stations, including a plethora of Larabar and Gu products, as well as sweet and salty offerings like trail mix, pretzels, potato chips, Oreo cookies, Pop Tarts, boiled potatoes with salt, PB&J finger sandwiches, regular soda (Coke or Pepsi), Mountain Dew, Ginger Ale, water, Tailwind Endurance Fuel, PB&J sandwiches, M&M’s, Mike & Ike’s, salt tablets, etc... There will also be general first aid items.

In addition to the items listed above, the Tennessee Valley and Muir Beach Aid Stations will have warm soup and sandwiches.

We are not permitted to distribute any sort of gel or Gu at Aid Stations within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. We will have Gu Energy Chews, as well as a plethora of other goodies for you to get carbs, calories and electrolytes. If you require gel throughout your race please carry it with you.

Due to diminishing daylight, we need to be firm with all of our intermediate cut off times.
COURSE MARKINGS

The course markings are color coded as follows:

50 Mile - Orange
50K - Orange Out to Yellow Shortcut to Orange Return
25K - Pink

In addition to being marked with colored ribbon, there will be signs placed at critical intersections, including "Wrong Way" signs. Upcoming turns will be indicated by 3 or 4 ribbons placed closely together, before and on the same side as the upcoming turn. After you complete the turn, there will be ribbons indicating the correct route (“confidence” ribbons). The most important course marking is blue ribbons. If you run past a blue ribbon you are going the wrong way!

Occasionally, vandalism does happen on the course. Even though the route will be marked extremely well, we do recommend that you carry a map with you while you are running.

Please be courteous on the trail. If you're passing another runner or hiker, announce your approach. On out and back sections please give the uphill runner the right of way.

Please have your bib number clearly visible when you approach and aid station and when you cross the finish line to ensure accurate results. Your bib number will be color coded to indicate the distance that you're running. If you want to change your distance, please let us know at check-in, at the latest. If you do decide to change your distance while running you must let the nearest aid station and finish line volunteer or timer know.
DROP BAGS, HEADLAMPS, AND PACERS

Drop Bags and Headlamps
With the sunrise on March 11 being at 6:27 AM, all runners should start the 50 Mile and 50K races with a headlamp. Headlamps can be left at any aid station after they are no longer needed, and will be delivered back to the S/F area after the Aid Station closes. Any runner who expects to be running beyond 6:30 PM should also plan on having a headlamp in one of their drop bags.

Drop bags will be available at 2 different aid station:
1) Tennessee Valley AS: Mile 10.5
2) Cardiac AS: Mile 19.8
3) Cardiac AS: Mile 29.3
4) Tennessee Valley AS: Mile 45.8

All drop bags must be left at the designated spot near the Finish line by 5:45 AM. Bags will be returned to the Start/Finish are immediately after each Aid Station closes. We will also have a designated location at both drop bag locations where you can place your drop bag after you are done using it. Any bags placed at this location will be returned to the Start/Finish area before the Aid Station closes.

Crew/Pacer Information
Runner crew is able to reach every aid station. Detailed driving directions to each Aid Station (from the Start/Finish area) are available above.

Pacers may join runners on their second pass through Cardiac Aid Station, mile 29.3.
TRAIL ETIQUETTE

We are committed to maintaining the beauty and sensitive nature of the trails and parks we run in. To that end, please respect the trails and do not litter. If you are seen littering you will be disqualified from the race. Please stay on course and out of all environmentally sensitive areas.

You can expect to encounter equestrians, mountain bikers, and hikers on the trails. Please be aware of all trail users and be cautious as you approach any horses. If the rider asks you to slow down, or walk, please heed their warning... it is for your own safety. If you are listening to music, please keep the volume low so you can hear other trail users call out.

Please be courteous on the trail. If you're passing another runner or hiker, announce your approach. On out and back sections please give the uphill runner the right of way.

If you choose to listen to music while on the trails, please be sure to keep the volume low, and to remove your headphones as you approach an aid station or the finish line.
