Attend: "Memory And Continuity Of The Southern Italian Jewish Legacy" (16 March: UCLA)

Fabrizio Lelli (University Of Salento) will present "Memory And Continuity Of The Southern Italian Jewish Legacy,” the Viterbi Lecture In Mediterranean Jewish Studies at 4 Pm on Thursday 16 March at 314 Royce Hall, moderated by Daniel Stein Kokin (Ucla).
 
This lecture looks at the history of Apulian Jewish culture and its major intellectual achievements in the late Middle Ages and also concentrates on written and oral testimonies of former Jewish refugees, who at the very end of WWII resided in the United Nations transit camps that were established in the region of Apulia. In this talk, Lelli will focus on this extraordinary spiritual rebirth of contemporary Judaism, by comparing it with other intellectually significant phases of Apulian Judaism in the past.
 
About the Speaker: Since 2001, FABRIZIO LELLI has been teaching Hebrew language and literature in the Faculty of Languages of the University of Salento (Lecce, Italy). Before and after his affiliation at Lecce, he has had fellowships and visiting appointments at the University of Turin, the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, the Institute for Advanced Studies in Religious Sciences in Florence, the Herbert Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of California, Los Angeles. His research activity focuses mainly on the philosophical and mystical literature of late Medieval and Early Modern Italian Jewish authors. In the past few years, he has been working on a project aimed to preserve the memory of the Jewish refugees in the United Nations transit camps, which were operative in Southern Italy after WWII. Dr. Lelli is the curator of the permanent exhibit of the museum “Palazzo Taurino—Medieval Jewish Lecce” which was opened in Lecce in May 2016.
