President's Message

Hello friends,

This is both a dismaying and a heartening time.  Scientific thought - a beautiful and essential process that lies behind our understanding of the world, our health care, our technology, and more - has been targeted by politicians and others that reject evidence, logic, and reason. 

On the positive side, we're seeing a strong outpouring of support for science, evidenced by the upcoming March for Science and hundreds of satellite marches around the world on Earth Day.

It's imperative now that we re-double our efforts to inspire current and future generations to care for the natural world and to appreciate learning.  There is no better or more inspiring set of places from which to lead this process than our national parks.  We will strive to reach more students, community members, and visitors through our programs and our partnerships.

Transition and Leadership Opportunity

Schoodic Institute has regretfully accepted the resignation of Erika Rowland as the Schoodic Institute Director of Programs due to a family medical issue.  Our search for a new Director of Programs to lead the Institute’s programs and partnerships in science and education is underway.

During the transition, four of our core program staff will be taking on additional interim responsibilities.  Education and Research Project Manager Hannah Webber, who leads Schoodic Institute’s intertidal research programs, will provide team coordination.  Nick Fisichelli will oversee development of research and university partnerships, including internship programs, in addition to his work as Forest Ecology Program Director.  Bill Zoellick will provide leadership and oversight for all education programs and partnerships, expanding from his current role as Director of Education Research.  Bird Ecology Program Director Seth Benz will coordinate public outreach programs, including presentations, lectures, and family events.

AP Summer Institute registration open

Schoodic Institute offers Advanced Placement Summer Institutes on the Schoodic Education and Research Center campus in Acadia National Park. The park provides a unique setting for intense work with other teachers and institute instructors. Two sessions are now available; July 23 -28, 2017, and July 30 - August 4, 2017.

There are accommodations for participating teachers on the Schoodic Institute campus at Schoodic Point, surrounded by spruce and fir forests and the Atlantic Ocean.  College credits are provided by Endicott College through the Maine Educators’ Consortium.
