Springing into action

Litter heroes from across Haringey turned out in force for the Great British Spring Clean last weekend.

Tidy-ups were held from Queen’s Wood to Bruce Castle Park, with dozens of bags of litter taken away.

Ed Richards, from Friends of Bruce Castle Park, said: “It was great to see people of all backgrounds from the community helping to make the park even more beautiful than it already is. We have a monthly litter pick and it was bolstered by a number of new arrivals who came along as part of the Great British Spring Clean.”

Well done to all the Haringey litter heroes – look out for more pics in the next edition of Haringey People magazine.

All aboard for Routes to Work

Hundreds of would-be apprentices flocked to Spurs’ White Hart Lane stadium this week for a Routes to Work Apprenticeship fair hosted by the club and the council.

A range of employers were on hand to give practical advice on how to make the most of apprenticeship opportunities across the borough.

The event, part of National Apprenticeship Week, built on the council’s ongoing commitment to supporting local people into employment.

Information about apprenticeships and other training and employment support can be found on the council website.

Flying the Commonwealth Flag

Residents are invited to join the Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Ali Ozbek, for a flag-raising ceremony to mark National Commonwealth Day.

The event, which celebrates unity, will see the flag raised outside the Civic Centre in Wood Green at 9.30am on Monday (March 13).

Haringey Deputy Lieutenant Peter Baker will read the Commonwealth affirmation and Father Simon Clark will say a short blessing. The ceremony is open to all residents.

Regeneration partner confirmed

Leading property developer Lendlease has been confirmed as the preferred partner for the council’s ambitious Haringey Development Vehicle (HDV), which will bring thousands of new homes and jobs to the borough.

Haringey and Lendlease will now begin detailed discussions on how the regeneration partnership will operate, before a final decision on whether to go ahead with the HDV is made this summer.

An HDV partnership would allow the council to keep control of future developments while bringing in significant investment.

Get the trend ahead of London Fashion Week

Style-conscious residents are invited to a drop-in sewing workshop to find out how to transform older clothes to bring them bang up to date.

The Get The Trend workshop – led by Love Your Clothes, Barnardo’s and Charity Fashion Live will give people simple skills to customize clothing, recreating key looks from the catwalk.

The workshop on Saturday at Crouch End’s Barnardo’s shop, on Broadway Parade, will be a focus on fabrics – highlighting how embroidery and sewing can give clothes a new lease of life.

Get the Trend is geared towards raising awareness of more sustainable fashion.
