As very hot temperatures impact the waning production from the Southwestern Desert regions, California is bracing for another round of wet weather next week. As the jet stream slides to the south it will funnel in a series of storm systems to California beginning early next week. The first system expected late Monday 20th looks to bring up to an inch of rain to Central California into Wednesday
with lesser amounts to the south. A stronger system moves in on Friday 24th
with significant rain expected across the state over the weekend. Longer range forecasts diverge with some keeping a wet pattern and others moving to dry conditions the following week of the 27th. Growers throughout the state have been scrambling to work the ground and shape the beds to get seeds planted in the recent dry conditions. The next round of rains will once again delay field work and plantings in the saturated ground next week. The rain and cooler temperatures will slow growth rates and increase mold, mildew and disease pressure in the stands impacting yields. These Coastal California fields already well behind in plantings will take another hit with this latest significant rain event. The 5 month period of October to February was the wettest in California since records began in 1895. With more rain on the way as we begin the transition to these coastal fields the supply situation will remain limited likely through the en re spring season.
