The race with the goods
No nickel and dime stuff at the Colfax Marathon. Registration includes it all on Sunday: timing chip, Pace Teams, Gatorade, Clif Shot gels, volunteers supporting you, age group awards and music along the way. Register for weekend events at RunColfax.org.

Let’s Doo It!
Spring is here, and dog waste left in the parks will really start to stink. It’s time to jump on the Let’s Doo It! campaign, a partnership of Lakewood and Jeffco Open Space to protect the environment and preserve our park experiences by encouraging dog owners to pick up after their dogs. Take the pledge to keep parks beautiful at Lakewood.org/parks.

Police Department seeks public comments
A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) will begin examining all aspects of the Lakewood Police Department this month to determine if it meets national standards for policing excellence. Community members are invited to offer comments about the department as part of this process at 6 p.m. on March 21 in the Training Room, 445 S. Allison Parkway. Details at Lakewood.org/news.

Above & Beyond

Police named Public Health Champions
The Lakewood Police Department and several staff members have been named 2016 Public Health Champions because of their work to become the first law enforcement agency in the county to promote the Points West program and to administer lifesaving medicine to overdose victims.

The Jefferson County Public Health Department names the champions each year to honor those working to prevent illness and promote health. The following staff members were named as part of the award: Police Chief Daniel McCasky; Division Chief Steve Rickels; Commanders Pat Heffner, Randy McNitt, Rob Buchan and Mike Maestas; Sgt. Marc DiRezza; and agent Aaron Lowe.

The health department developed the Points West program, which provides several resources to address drug use. Lakewood Police distributed the Points West information in the community, and Police Chief McCasky along with agents helped design and star in two training videos for law enforcement officers and a public service announcement that are all being used widely in the metro area. The department’s use of the lifesaving medicine reversed several overdoses in the field in late 2016.
