UN Summer Internship Reminder - Deadline TODAY March 19!

Established in 1946, the United Nations Information Center (UNIC) is responsible for US/UN issues and serves as a liaison to Congress, the US government and foundations in Washington as well as to the media, academic institutions and public across the United States. The Center includes a small reference library that houses official UN documents as well as other materials published by the United Nations. The office also supports high-level visitors from headquarters and field offices around the world. UNIC’s internship program presents an enormous opportunity for college students and post-graduates seeking a challenging work experience in international relations. The Center accepts interns three times a year (fall, winter/spring and summer) with deadlines posted on the website on an unpaid basis for a period of three months or more.

The UNIC is currently accepting applications for summer 2017 internships until TODAY March 19, 2017.  Most internships will begin in May, with some flexibility as to exact start dates, and last for at least three months. Click here to learn more and apply.

Upcoming Virtual Career Fairs: Veterans and Diversity

The Diversity Virtual Career Fair, held on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, is open to diverse students and alumni from college and universities throughout the U.S.  It is free for jobseekers to attend. You can learn more here, and register for the event here.

There are many upcoming opportunities for veterans to network and job search via a Virtual Career Fair.  A few are listed below:

Upcoming Federal Employment Webinars
 
These events are for applying to positions with the U.S. Federal Government, which only hires U.S. citizens.
 
A Senior Federal Recruitment Advisor with the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) in Washington, DC will be presenting several practical webinar information sessions during this spring 2017 semester to help students learn more about how to find and apply for federal jobs and internships (including Pathways) and strategies on preparing their federal resume. 
 
Each webinar lasts approximately 90 minutes, including a Q&A period. There is no cost for the webinars, which are delivered via a link to Adobe Connect, a web-based software application that allows students to participate in the webinars from the convenience of their own individual laptops/desktops, wherever an internet connection is available.  There is no separate phone line as audio will be through the participant’s laptop/desktop speakers.
 
Please note that registration for each session is limited to 1500 participants on a first-come, first-served basis. 
 

Writing Your Federal Résumé  - This webinar teaches you how to develop and write your federal résumé.  By the end of this session, you will:
  • Know the importance of your résumé in applying for federal jobs and why preparing a thorough résumé is the single best step you can take towards obtaining federal government employment
  • Leave with tips and guidelines for improving your résumé
  • Learn how to use the USAJOBS Résumé Builder to create a new résumé

Foreign Policy Association Excelsior Student Membership
 
The Foreign Policy Association (FPA) Excelsior Student Membership Program is an exciting opportunity for current SIPA students to gain exclusive access to the brightest minds in international affairs.  Students accepted into the Foreign Policy Association Excelsior Student Membership Program will receive one year of FPA membership, the benefits of which include, invitations to attend numerous guest lectures, the annual World Leadership Forum, exclusive receptions with guest speakers, and networking events tailored specifically towards outstanding students looking to begin careers in international affairs.   

The first-established international affairs education organization in the United States, the Foreign Policy Association strives to strengthen our democracy by providing public learning opportunities and by developing informed opinion on U.S. foreign policy and global issues.  In 2018, FPA will celebrate its 100th year serving as an independent, nonpartisan, and not-for-profit organization. Since its creation, the FPA has stimulated wider and more effective participation in world affairs, enriching national debates about America’s role in the world through education, inclusion, imagination, and open exchange of perspectives and ideas. 

With the introduction of the Excelsior Student Membership Program, the Foreign Policy Association commits to further expanding its reach while placing greater emphasis on inspiring and supporting the next generation of foreign policy leaders. The Excelsior Student Membership Program will give students the opportunity to interact with the Foreign Policy Association’s Fellows, as well as to attend the FPA’s robust lecture series. The Foreign Policy Association’s distinguished fellows include ambassadors, CEOs, entrepreneurs, and prominent academics from a large variety of fields and backgrounds.

In order to apply for the Excelsior Student Membership Program, students must submit a cover letter addressing the attached questions, in addition to submitting an updated resume and an unofficial transcript.  Applicants must be current SIPA students. The Excelsior Membership will begin in April 2017 and end in May 2018. The deadline to apply is March 21, 2017.

Dubai Business Internships

Run under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Dubai Business Internships (DBI) offers outstanding graduates from the United States, China, Kazakhstan and Russia a fully-funded management training programme which is an unrivalled opportunity to study and do business in Dubai, a dynamic and multicultural hub for global commerce, and to develop as cultural ambassadors and business leaders of the future.

The ten-month programme will start at the end of August 2017. Participants will receive academic and management training and build their skill-sets through an internship with one of Dubai’s home-grown global leaders in a sector central to its economy, including trade, tourism, finance and logistics.

On Wednesday, March 22 from 5:00pm-6:00pm in The Garden Room at Columbia University (116th Street and Broadway), Programme Director James Maughan and a DBI Alum will deliver a presentation and Q&A. CCSI Now Accepting Applications for Summer Internships

The Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment (CCSI), a joint center of Columbia Law School and the Earth Institute, is now accepting applications for internship positions for summer 2017.  Interns are staffed to one or more specific research projects depending on the background and interests of the particular applicant.  Unpaid and paid opportunities are available; summer internships are full-time (35-40 hours per week).

CCSI is a leading applied research center and forum dedicated to the study, practice and discussion of sustainable international investment.  Their mission is to develop and disseminate practical approaches and solutions to maximize the impact of international investment for sustainable development.  The Center's work is organized around three major areas of research: Sustainable Investments in Extractive Industries, Sustainable Investments in Land and Agriculture, and Sustainable International Investment Law and Policy.

John D. Solomon Fellowship for Public Service

The John D. Solomon Fellowship for Public Service is a student fellowship devoted specifically to emergency management. The program provides ten graduate students in the New York City area with the opportunity to complete a nine-month, paid fellowship in a New York City government agency or non-profit organization.

The 2017-2018 participating agencies are: 
• NYC Emergency Management 
• NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene 
• NYC Department for the Aging 
• NYC Police Department 
• NYC Department of Education 
• NYC Department of Homeless Services 
• NYC Fire Department 
• The American Red Cross of Greater New York 

Fellows are current graduate students residing in the NYC metro area who are pursuing degrees in Public Administration, Public Health, Emergency Management, Public Safety, Public Policy, or other related fields. 

Fellows engage in a wide variety of activities, including representing their agency at community and local government meetings, undertaking various individual and agency-directed projects, organizing and participating in community service projects, and overall, working toward enhancing the preparedness and resilience of New York City.

MTA New York City Transit Internship-Mentorship Opportunities/Summer Internships Available - Apply Now
 
MTA New York City Transit has paid and unpaid internship-mentorship opportunities for graduate students available this coming summer and all throughout the year. These programs are open to not only U.S. citizens and permanent residents, but also international students. Deadlines vary by position and students are encouraged to apply early to ensure consideration.
 
MTA New York City Transit established their Internship Program in 1981 and currently has a partnership with more than 200 colleges and universities throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. Internships include paid and unpaid projects. The program has been a success for New York City Transit, colleges, universities and students. A minimum of 170 students participate in the program during the school year and more during the summer. Since the program’s inception, a considerable number of participants have been hired for full-time positions after graduation.
 
MTA New York City Transit project managers have a variety of skills that they want to share. Students can gain hands-on experience in these areas:

1. Submit the following information to sipa_ocs@columbia.edu via an email with subject “Your Name” MTA-NYCT INTERNSHIP APPLICATION.

2. OCS will submit your information into the MTA system. You will receive an email with a user ID and log-in information within 48 hours. The log-in information will remain active for 30 days. With it, you will be able to access paid and unpaid projects for which you are eligible.
 
3. Use your log-in information to apply for internships on the MTA-NYCT Internship homepage. Internships are listed under "Current Projects and Positions".

 
Reminder: Spring 2017 Internship Paperwork Reporting Requirements

Internships are an integral part of the student experience at SIPA.  While matriculated within their MPA or MIA degree program, students are required to complete at least 120 hours of an internship along with submitting completed paperwork as part of their academic coursework.

Students may also choose to complete the internship requirement with no credit (no course registration required), or they may choose to register for: U9013 course section 001 for 1.5 credits (for 120+ internship hours) or U9013 course section 002 for 3 credits (for 240+ internship hours).  The internship must be related to the student's concentration/specialization, as well as it must include professional, substantive work.  Lastly, the internship may not be conducted in a family-owned organization/business.  For full details, please review all sections of the Internship Requirement page here.  Information regarding the required paperwork can also be found at the same link under the "Required Paperwork" section.

The deadline for all paperwork (the student's Internship Report, the Internship Employer Information Form to be completed by the student, and the Supervisor Evaluation Survey) for Spring 2017 internships is *April 15, 2017.

*However, students graduating as of May 2017 should submit their paperwork before the April 15 deadline, so that they may be certified in time for graduation upon review of their internship information.

PLEASE NOTE: International students should be aware of special regulations when seeking paid internships in the United States.  Please review the International Student Work Authorization section of the OCS website here.
