Brenda Schmidt Named Saskatchewan's 7th Poet Laureate
Sage Hill Writing is proud that Brenda Schmidt, recently named the Poet Laureate of Saskatchewan, is one of our very own board members and a Sage Hill alumna. Congratulations, Brenda!
A naturalist and visual artist, Brenda Schmidt "explores creative paths between the natural and digital worlds." Brenda has published a book of essays and four books of poetry, and is a three-time Saskatchewan Book Awards nominee. "Her work has been published, performed, shown and broadcast across Canada and was part of a poetry installation at the University of Exeter (UK). A past reviewer of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry for Quill & Quire, she founded the Ore Samples Writers Series in 2016" (Saskatchewan Writers' Guild, "Seventh Poet Laureate Announced").

On her Sage Hill Writing connection, Brenda Schmidt writes, "I've been a participant twice, working with Fred Wah in the Spring Poetry Colloquium and Daphne Marlatt in the summer Poetry Colloquium, and both times were life-changing in the best possible way. My writing is very different from theirs, and that's precisely why I chose to work with them. I came away thinking differently, seeing my work differently, and my writing broke free and moved forward as a result.
"Equally important, I connected with writers from across the country and many of them are friends today. Sage Hill has given me a great big community and that really matters to me and my writing life. I just want to say thank you over and over. I want everyone reading this to know how important Sage Hill is to me."
All the best to Brenda in her time as Poet Laureate of Saskatchewan.
Her term begins April 1, 2017 and runs until December 31, 2018.
