World Winter Games in Austria 2017

Special Olympics GB is proud to update you every day of the #TEAMSOGB’s 21 athletes - eleven Alpine Skiers and ten Figure Skaters – who are representing their country at the 2017 World Winter Games. Athletes from Wales, Scotland, South East, North West, Midlands, Yorkshire & Humberside and East of England regions are representing Special Olympics GB at World Winter Games #Austria2017. The showpiece Special Olympics World Winter Games is held every four years and the largest disability sports event of 2017 anywhere in the World. A spectacular opening ceremony will be held in Schladming on Saturday 18th March 2017.

18th March Competition Update

Alpine Skiing
Today we had three athletes divisioning in the Super G event - James Millard on intermediate and Alex Scarborough and Owen Stephen on the Advanced course. James catapulted himself out of the start with his race cry after he had flown down the course coach Joshua Murphy asked James how he was feeling to quote James " it's an absolutely amazing feeling I've got such an adrenaline rush going through me ".

Figure Skating
Boarding the bus at 2.30pm we were driven to Schladming where we got to meet up with the the rest of the GB Team who we have not seen for a few days.
Lots of high fives, and the chance for more pin badges swapping with other countires whilst waiting to parade into the Opening Ceremony
The team walked in extreemly proud, waving to the cheering crowd and cameras.

Special Olympics GB athletes represent Global Change and Leadership at World Games in Austria
|

|
Three Special Olympics GB athletes are providing inspirational leadership for the organisation on a global stage at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria this week.
Matt Dodds from Hertfordshire is participating in the Global Youth Leadership summit, while Ian Harper is a leading figure at the ‘Unified Talk’ session in Schladming on Monday. In addition, from the North West, Kiera Byland is taking part in the Special Olympics Europe Eurasia Athlete Input Council.
Karen Wallin, CEO of Special Olympics GB, said: “To have three of our athletes involved in such prominent roles within the organisation on a global stage makes us all feel very proud. They are not only representing Special Olympics but also their communities where they are making a huge difference and advocates for change and inclusion.”

Special Olympics GB skiers Lauren Payne and Lauren Cain who are pictured at the link below with our 13-year old #TEAMSOGB figure skater Meg McFarlane (middle) have a message they would like you to read and share. They are three of 3,000 athletes with learning disabilities from 110 countries taking part in the Special Olympics World Winter Games over the next week. Meg is one of the youngest athletes at the Games. #Austria2017
