Q1 2017

Welcome to this review of the year so far......

Taolu, Sanda & Knife Disarm seminar

What a great start to the year with 30 entrants in Round One of the SSK Taolu & Sanda Championships in the various categories.

The Taolu team event was won by the Green Team from our Bethnal Green club (Dita, Hannah and Jack).  This was the first time Bethnal Green entered this competition and what a fantastic start.   Particular congratulations to Dita Tang who also won the highest individual's marks of the day.
Congratulations to Dita Tang who is currently leading the Taolu event.  The final Taolu event is on the 17th September at the Dan Tien Centre.   The scores from these Taolu events are combined to determine the overall Taolu Champion for the year.

Results from the Taolu and Sanda combine to determine the All-round SSK Champion for 2017.
The Sanda competition saw twenty rounds of kick punch throw fought out following International Wushu Sanda rules.   The gold medal winner in the heavyweight category was Jon Alagoa; at middleweight Matthew Collino was the winner gold medal winner. The winner at lightweight was John Machell.  John is our current 2016 Taolu and Sanda Champion; he is making a great start to defending his title.

In terms of Sanda points John is nicely in front of the other two gold medalists.  However all could change with the British Chinese Council of Martial Arts National Championships on the 16th July and Round Two of our SSK Championships in September.
The Sanda Leader-board after the first round of bouts.  Next up is the BCCMA British Championships in July followed by our own Taolu and Sanda event in September.
Following on from his eye opening self-defence techniques for ground escapes workshop last year, one of our 3rd Degree Black Belt Dion was asked to run a specialist workshop on combat tested knife disarming techniques drawing on his extensive experience as a military instructor.  This event was oversubscribed and ended too quickly for the attendees – we will be repeating this event on Tuesday 4th April in Watford for those who missed out or want more.
Whilst we thank Dion for a fascinating seminar we must also thank those other unsung heroes who constantly help us at our many events.  Big thank yous go out to Rosa for the administration of the Taolu; to Catherine for providing valuable assistance.  Also we cannot fail to thank Ada for her continuing to provide medial cover for our events - thank you ladies.
Other activities
The SSK year got off to a very rapid start on January 2nd with our one week intensive kickboxing course held in conjunction with Independent Drama.  These courses cover real kickboxing skills and fighting for theatre and film certification. The courses are predominantly attended by actors and stunt men and women; the kickboxing intensive element is run by senior instructors David and Jon.  A number of our members also attend these events to support the novices getting to grips with martial arts techniques.  The next course is scheduled for 31st July.   Anyone interested in attending please speak to your instructor.
