From the Board

Come to our Volunteer Recognition Celebration April 25th!

Without our members volunteering, there would be no LakeShore Ski & Sports Club.  So, join the party and come out to honor and recognize the twenty-six members who made everything happen for LSSC this past year.  These are your trip and event leaders, ski instructors, communications assistants, and board members.  The party starts at 6:30 PM at Jak’s Tap, 901 W. Jackson, and we’ll start the program about 7 PM.   Also, you won’t want to miss a special surprise some of our musically talented members are planning.

BIKE HOLLAND MICHIGAN
Friday, Jul 14, 2017 to Sunday, Jul 16, 2017

Enjoy summer in Holland, MI with two bike riding options.  Join the Holland 100 bike ride over country roads with riding options of 18, 36, 67, or 100 miles.  Registration for the Holland 100 is separate and is prorated for when you register.  The earlier you register the cheaper the ride ($30.00 - $40.00).  It has great food stops and is well supported with sag wagons.  Another alternative is to ride along Holland’s bike paths out to the lakeshore to see Big Red (the Holland lighthouse) and enjoy lunch along the way.  Holland has a wonderful Farmer’s Market to shop at either before or after your ride.  Sunday offers the opportunity to ride the Kal Haven trail on your way back to Chicago or to stop in Saugatuck to enjoy the shops, galleries, and good eating.

This is a self drive trip which includes double occupancy, a continental breakfast, and a wine and cheese party.  *NOTE: The Holland 100 requires a separate registration which can be done at www.holland100.comEd Hanlon will be the ride leader.

ART PRIZE - GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN
Friday, Sep 22, 2017 to Sunday, Sep 24, 2017

LSSC is returning for the third time to Grand Rapids ArtPrize.  The hotel is an ideal location within walking distance from all art venues and restaurants.   Visit Meijer Garden and Sculpture Park.  Japanese Garden is very much worth seeing also. Its only 5.6 miles from the hotel.

ArtPrize is recognized as the most-attended public art event on the planet according to The Art Newspaper, and was recently highlighted in The New York Times’ 52 Places To Go in 2016.

For 19 days in the early fall, around 400,000 attendees descend upon three square miles of downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan where anyone can find a voice in the conversation about what is art and why it matters. Art from around the world pops up in every inch of downtown in over 160 venues—museums, galleries, bars, restaurants, theaters, hotels, public parks, lobbies, buildings, walls, bridges, laundromats, and auto body shops—and it’s all free and open to the public.

It’s unorthodox, highly disruptive, and undeniably intriguing to the art world and the public alike.

EVENT RECAP

BANFF and LAKE LOUISE DOWNHILL and X-COUNTRY - Feb-March, 2017

By Margaret Sheridan

How to sate snow-starvation in Chicago? Head to Calgary, Canada.

That’s what 32 LSSC members did in February. And returned home, well-fed. A week of endless sun and surplus snow at Lake Louise and Banff rewarded 13 cross-country skiers, and 19 down-hillers.

Kudos to organizers Larry Kyte and John Grubbs, and many volunteers who shared driving, organized dinners and enlightened us with GPS and map-reading skills.

The 19 down-hillers managed icy, vertical drops at Lake Louise then two choices of terrain in Banff, including the favored Sunshine Village area. Good weather make for a great ski trip with 5 days of all the skiing you could want.  Add to it a beginning  welcome party, dinner parties every night and a friendly bar at the lodge, and ending with a great  Greek Dinner party made for a made for a very memorable trip.

The cross-country group crisscrossed a snow-covered Lake Louise, admired the guts of ice climbers dotting a frozen waterfall like ants, and then discovered various forest trails back to our hotel, Lake Louise Inn. But impeccable grooming at Canmore Nordic Centre, Banff (the site of the 1988 Olympic Winter Games), made it the hands-down favorite for classic striders and skaters.

No one returned home malnourished or parched. Afternoon tea
at Chateau Lake Louise and Banff Springs Hotel earned an audience. So did strolling around the town of Banff from our hotel, Caribou Lodge. Some stopped at the Whyte Museum of Canadian Rockies and others sauntered to the cocktail lounge at the Banff Springs Resort, visited numerous boutiques, galleries, and restaurants. Culinary memories include strawberry rhubarb pie at Railway Station Restaurant; passing appetizers of calamari and smoked s’mores dessert at The Distillery; forking bread cubes for Swiss cheese fondue, and swilling Chilean rose wine during happy hour at Juniper Hotel Bistro. Lucky Dani and Andrew who met a wine-maker from Bordeaux who kept the stemware busy at a Swiss restaurant at Lake Louise.

Before returning to a snowless Chicago, member Allegra Atkinson summed up the Canadian experience: “Just being outdoors in this magnificent scenery and fresh air is enough. But the snow and sunshine? Amazing.’’
