National Charter School Week: Tell Us Why You Love Your Charter School!

May 1-5, 2017 marks National Charter Schools Week. All across the country, schools will celebrate more than 25 years of innovation in education - nearly 15 of which have happened right here in Tennessee. Since the first charter school opened in 2003, Tennessee has been a leader on the education reform front and today more than 33,000 students have the opportunity to attend 107 public charter schools and counting. National Charter Schools Week is a chance for everyone to not only celebrate the impactful contributions that charter schools are adding to public education, but to educate themselves and others about what charters are and how they work. Read more about why we celebrate National Charter Schools Week here.

And, don't forget to follow us and share your stories on all of our social media platforms to keep up with the awesome stories from #TNcharters across the state! #CharterSchoolsWeek
Tennessee High-Quality Charter Schools Act Passes Legislature
The Tennessee High Quality Charter Schools Act (HB310) passed out of both Tennessee Legislative chambers with a significant majority. An overview of key provisions from this piece of legislation is available here, and the amended and final version of the bill can be found hereThanks to feedback from charter school leaders, TCSC, and education partners across the state, we were able to address the issues most important to students, leaders, and the success of high-quality public charter schools to include facilities funding support and establishing frameworks for encouraging stronger authorizer best practices. This is a great step forward and we are excited to lead into National Charter Schools Week with such positive news!

Days Off the Hill: Welcoming TN Legislators Inside Charter School Classrooms and Communities

This year, instead of taking charter school kids to the Nashville Capitol, many schools got on board with "Days Off the Hill" by welcoming legislators to experience their innovative schools first hand.

"Inviting legislators into my classroom has been a value add for me, my students and all kids who deserve access to high quality schools.  My students are amazing--as I'm sure every teacher believes.  The most powerful moments in my classroom have happened when my six year olds have shared their thoughts and opinions with legislators.  It has helped my students to believe that their voices are important--and it has brought their stories to the capitol..." - Katie Hoffmeir, KIPP Kirkpatrick Charter School, Nashville, TN

TCSC is highlighting each visit on our social media, so follow us to see more compelling reasons why legislators are going off the hill and into the classroom!
