SEC Commish Sankey believes his league is regaining momentum on the MBB front as five member institutions will participate in the NCAA Tourney starting today, the most since 2008. Points to personnel additions of former Big East Commish Tranghese as a special adviser & former NBA/longtime college AC Leibovitz as Assoc. Commish for MBB as "very helpful in the nature and substance of the conversations around men’s basketball." On the court, success in high-level non-conference play, HC continuity, a common byproduct of the right hires, as well as success in March are essential to continued growth. Longterm: "Our expectations for men’s basketball are what we see in other sports, which is six, seven or eight teams participating in the postseason. That’s certainly our hope in the future." (link)
MAC Commish Steinbrecher defends the conference's FB schedule, which includes no Saturday games in November, by saying it's just the way the schedule worked out this year. "We've been playing midweek games since 2003. There's not been a change of philosophy or anything else. ... We walk a tight rope. We want to make sure we provide a great fan experience at stadiums, but at the same token, we have a very unique and valuable opportunity to gain some national exposure and provide resources back to our universities." Steinbrecher also calls making the CFB playoff an "uphill battle" but favors that over a separate playoff for 'Group of 5' teams, saying the four-team playoff provides more opportunity for a MAC team than the previous BCS model. Acknowledging that MAC schools are not in a position to match compensation that can be offered 'Power 5' members, Steinbrecher asserts the league has a different appeal. "Come into this league, it's a very level playing field. The difference from the highest budget to the lowest budget is the smallest bandwidth across all of FBS. If you're successful here, it's because you're the total package." (link)
The Wichita Eagle examines the effect state budgetary woes are having on the athletic departments of MVC institutions, citing two consecutive years of low postseason MBB participation, with only Wichita State (NCAA) and Illinois State (NIT) earning postseason invites this year. Missouri earlier this year announced cuts of roughly $82M to higher ed funding while Iowa legislators recently announced cuts in excess of $25M to the state's regent universities, Iowa, Iowa State and Northern Iowa. Missouri State AD Moats: "We're going to be part of those cuts. Perfectly understandable. It might be more than ($750K) by the time they get done." Moats envisions a scenario with fewer offerings, putting sports such as tennis, swimming and T&F at risk. "Are you going to be able to be good and fund a lot of sports or are you going to have to reduce the number of sports? That's difficult. It's difficult from a morale situation and it's difficult philosophically." Southern Illinois AD Bell says the university "simply ran out of options" when the state's ongoing budget impasse played a part in SIU's decision to drop tennis as part of a $1M budget reduction. Meanwhile, Wichita State is less reliant on state appropriations, which comprise about $2.5M the overall $25M budget. Overall, Commish Elgin says that "we haven't surrendered. There are conferences that I think have an understanding that they are one-bid leagues. I don't think that will ever be us, and not just in basketball." (link)
More Elgin, this time on his frustrations on Sunday night, "Not only the news that Illinois State doesn’t get into the NCAA Tournament, but the seeding of Wichita State as a 10 seed. It was disappointing to say the least." Calls Illinois State HC Muller's Twitter push for some high-major opponents "beautiful," plus, "It was on point because if the requirement is you have to play top 50 teams, and you can’t get those top 50 teams, does that exclude all of those teams who were unable to get top 50 teams on their schedule? Or do not have those teams in their league?" (link)
With only four mid-major teams getting an at-large berth to the NCAA tourney this year, The New York Times' Tracy examines why the number of mid-majors getting invited to the Big Dance has been declining in recent years. To put things in perspective, mid-major teams received seven of the 36 possible at-large bids in 2011, the year the tournament expanded to 68 teams. That number was 11, 11 and 10 the following few years before dropping back to seven again and then six in 2016. Several mid-major leaders quoted in the piece, with most of them echoing MAAC Commish Ensor's thoughts: "There seems to be a bias somewhat inherent in the structure." (link)
The NYT also examines Kentucky MBB HC Calipari's "media empire," consisting of a massive Twitter following, podcast and website, all of which Calipari administers without knowing how to tweet, never using email or even having a computer in his office. Collectively, the various platforms serve as a "rapid-response mechanism for one of the sports world's most in-demand and polarizing personalities," according to the NYT. Calipari: "We're going to give out our message, but they're also going to be able to see who I am, who my friends are, what I do, what I read -- and it's not filtered through anybody." Founding editor of CoachCal.com Scott says Calipari has always sought to connect directly with fans and recalls the coach delivering pizza to students waiting in line for games at UMass. "His major was marketing, and he's used it every day of his life." Calipari can also use the platforms to respond to disparaging reports and says that in the "old days, you had to wait. You can get on a day later on the radio, but it's too late. It's already singed in their mind. Now, I can respond in 30 seconds." Full profile. (link)
Illinois will spend upwards of $2.15M on contract buyouts associated with MBB HC Groce and WBB HC Bollant, both of whom have been let go in the past week. UI Board of Trustees Chair Koritz: "The harsh reality of it is it's a business. You don't have to look any farther than Big Ten football, the salaries that coaches are being paid. It's almost like an arms race. I think in a lot of states, two of the highest paid state employees are the football coach and the basketball coach. That's just the way it is right now." Koritz adds that he has "tremendous faith" in AD Whitman and that it's "important we let him run his shop." Prez Killeen echoes that sentiment, noting that Whitman presented charts on income projections and the cost of coaching changes when deciding to part ways with Groce and Ballant. "The financial side of this has been very carefully looked at. As usual, AD Whitman is very analytical in his approach to these things." Killeen adds that he has not given Whitman a salary ceiling for hiring new coaches, but has discussed scenarios. "I'm very comfortable with what I've heard." (link)
Another large gift continues East Carolina's push toward the Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium southside revamp. This time it's a $1M sum from BB&T Corporation, bringing the total amount raised to over $28M. The overall project pegged at $55M & AD Compher says BB&T's commitment "is a testament to the corporation's dedication not only to ECU Athletics and the Pirate Club, but its willingness to continue to support economic growth in eastern North Carolina." (link)
Vivature inks its ninth statewide deal as the University of Tennessee System agrees to terms on a five-year pact "worth several millions of dollars combined." Per the release, Tennessee, UT Chattanooga & UT Martin should each see new six-figure annual revenue streams as a byproduct of using NExTT athletic training software & billion solution. Vivature CEO Bass: "The level of detail covered during contract talks was amazing and a testament to the professionalism of this system." (link)
A trio of authors contribute to this Harvard Business Review piece: "Research: How Incentive Pay Affects Employee Engagement, Satisfaction, and Trust." Thesis: "Our analysis showed that performance-related pay was positively associated with job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and trust in management. Profit-related pay did not have similar positive effects; in fact, some levels of profit-related pay resulted in employees being less committed and trusting management less." Only performance-related pay was positively associated with the perception that work is more intense, lots more. (link)

From Cheney to Gainesville, FB coaches from Eastern Washington are sleeping in Florida HC McElwain's garage while they observe the Gators' spring practice and pick the brain of the former EWU S-A and AC. Remembering when he wasn't roaming the sidelines in the SEC, McElwain understands how some programs must do more with less: "That's what you do at that level. You can't afford a hotel room, so they're sleeping in the garage." (link)

SI's Thamel frames the importance of Mount St. Mary's play-in game win on Tuesday night over New Orleans, "For a tiny conference like the NEC, with a budget of just over $3 million annually, the bounty from the extra NCAA tournament unit is a complete game changer. Every trip to the NCAAs gives a league like the NEC a $264,859 rolling payout every year for six years. Every victory adds an extra unit, meaning an extra set of payouts—$1.6 million—over the same six-year span." NEC Commish Morris: "For the NEC, it’s a significant impact because we don’t have the big media deals that the other leagues have. So this is really a revenue generator for us." (link)
HC Notes: Washington AD Cohen describes the decision to part ways with longtime MBB HC Romar as "emotional." More, "This was such an important decision. It impacted so many different people. There was no decision until a couple days ago." (link); Missouri AD Sterk turns to Cal HC Martin with a seven-year, $21M deal to take over in Columbia. (link); Connected to both moves, The Ringer's Uggetti asks if top-rated prospective student-athlete Porter Jr. did or did not sign his NLI with the Huskies with reports that his dad will join Martin's staff. (link); Statement from Oregon on news that Volleyball HC Moore will retire on the 15th of May, "Coach Moore and the UO have come to realize that his coaching style is mismatched with the standards of the University of Oregon athletic department. He has acknowledged that his coaching style may have been viewed negatively by some student-athletes and for that he is sorry." AHC Ulmer takes over the Ducks. (link); UMKC AD Wilson is in the market for a new WBB HC as five-year boss Frese exits. (link); New Hampshire Men's Hockey HC Umile will coach the 2017-18 season & then hang up his skates after 28 years of leadership & 18 NCAA Tourney appearances (at this point). (link); ESPN's Goodman clarifies that Quinnipiac could pay up to $800K, but only for a select few MBB HC candidates. (link)
WDRB columnist Bozich asserts the time for Indiana AD Glass to decide on the future of MBB HC Crean is now. "Either A) add another season or two to the three years remaining on Crean’s contract or B) wish Crean the best at his next coaching opportunity, after thanking him for navigating Indiana back from the Kelvin Sampson NCAA probation. (That choice comes with a $4 million buyout and coaching search.) There is no C), D) or E)." Bozich posits that fear fans would "sound their growing unhappiness about a program that missed the NCAA Tournament for the second time in four seasons" is what "drove Indiana to surrender a home game" in the NIT. As for Crean's future, Bozich notes that MBB openings abound, though none with the prestige of IU. "Perhaps Louisiana State, North Carolina State, California or Washington will consider Crean. Or [Glass] can make the decision that will define [his] tenure as the Indiana athletic director." (link)
Bloomberg examines the speed with which licensed sports merchandise moves from event to retail availability: "minutes and seconds, not hours and days." Four minutes passed from the time Northwestern officially earned its first NCAA Tournament berth to the time Fanatics had available for purchase on its website, purple Northwestern t-shirts that read "Chicago is Dancin': The Road to the Final Four." While the Northwestern tourney bid was pretty well decided in advance, other occurrences, such as major tournament upsets, are more difficult to anticipate. To that end, Fanatics keeps around a dozen paid "rapid responders" in its offices in Jacksonville and San Mateo during tournament games. President of Fanatics' branded apparel division Peck: "That's my Ferrari team. They only go fast." Using design books with approved logos for each university, the "Ferrari team" takes "all of a few minutes" to design a t-shirt. From there, once the team receives approval from the university -- which can be almost immediate, especially with programs with whom Fanatics has a long-standing relationship -- the t-shirt is listed on the Fanatics website. From "final shot to first sale," the entire process can take less than 15 minutes. (link)
Buffalo Wild Wings is once again going all-in on March Madness, has already launched the "We Do It For You" campaign that you may have seen around NCAA Tourney programming. One spot we haven't seen yet is contextual to overtime games that tells fans to "enjoy the five extra minutes of free basketball and not question who or what might have caused it." Facebook, Twitter, Instagram Stories, themed Snapchat filters, plus a visible presence at the Final Four are all pieces of the activation puzzle. (link)
Media/Tech: Another study of note as LEK Consulting finds Millennials lean toward eSports over traditional options & online viewing over TVs. (link); Interesting data on ad sales around March Madness as last year's haul was $1.24B. Auto brands General Motors, Nissan & Volkswagen all spent $28M more, with GM's $98M topping the charts for all advertisers. Of particular note, some brands push hard the first weekend & then don't air another ad the rest of the tourney. Applies to 10 of 71 overall spenders. (link); Twitter does another sports deal, this time with the National Lacrosse League. (link); More importantly, it sounds like Twitter will announce plans next week to allow media outlets to stream live directly into the platform. From The Information, "The company will open up its live-streaming API, allowing media firms to plug directly into Twitter’s software... Right now, media firms that want to stream live on Twitter have to arrange deals with the company or else use its Periscope app." (link); Nielsen still hasn't released ratings from earlier in the week as a power outage affected its reporting facility. The Knoxville News Sentinel's Potkey reviews emails uncovered via a FOIA request around the AD hire at Tennessee. Of note, Chancellor Davenport asked members of the committee to not make individual contact with any potential candidates & that everything should run through Turnkey Search Managing Director DeFilippo. Not surprisingly, Davenport received recommendations to hire UT Chattanooga AD Blackburn. Atlanta looks to have been a meeting spot for conversations with candidates, more. (link)
Nebraska continues to formalize its FB recruiting department & promoted Van De Riet to Assoc. AD for FB Administration as he will now oversee the unit alongside Executive Director of Player Personnel/Special Assistant to the Head Coach Devaney. So, recruiting & player personnel areas will technically be separate now & HC Riley previously explained the decision, "When you use that word ‘recruiting’ — like the coaches going out to recruit a player — it kind of morphs into the whole idea about, ‘Is the guy recruiting or evaluating?...So there’s two separate entities that everyone lumps into one word — recruiting." (link)
Yahoo's Eisenberg profiles former Gonzaga MBB HC Monson, who left Spokane in the summer of 1999 to become the HC at Minnesota, four months after leading the Zags on an improbable run to the Elite Eight. It was an agonizing decision for Monson at the time, who ultimately made the jump for financial reasons: "It was going to take me 15 years to make the same amount of money at Gonzaga that I would make in two at Minnesota. I asked myself in the mirror, 'Does it really make sense to turn down the chance to set your family up for life just because you’re comfortable where you are?'" According to Eisenberg, to this day, it’s still a question with which Monson continues to wrestle. And although the program has grown to a stature that Monson could have never imagined 18 years ago, he still remains a part of the program. Zags HC Few, who remains close with Monson: "He’ll say, 'If we would have made that shot at the end …' and he’ll be talking about my game. That’s pretty cool. He is the guy who got me into this profession. He has his hands on the foundation of this whole thing. So we want him to think like that because he’s a big part of this." (link)
California Assemblywoman Gonzalez Fletcher introduces the Athlete Protection Act which would create the country's first Athlete Protection Commission tasked with health and safety oversight for college athletes. Among its responsibilities, the commission would ensure that every campus maintains accurate medical records for its athletes, ensure athletes have enough time to complete their coursework, and require transparency in the way programs operate as it relates to players' rights. Gonzalez Fletcher: "The NCAA has forfeited its responsibility to keep players safe, and too many colleges and universities have forfeited our trust when it comes to player safety. I have introduced the Athlete Protection Act to do the job that the NCAA and campus administrators have utterly failed to do of keeping players safe. No parents should ever lose a child because a school valued winning a game more than they valued the health of a player." (link)
Another profile from Yahoo, this one on Arizona State Senior Assoc AD Boyd's role in driving overall success for ASU student-athletes, who rank second only to Stanford in several academic measurables across all sports, including NCAA Graduation Success Rate, which stands at 87%. In FB, ASU ranks third with a graduation rate of 80%, and since 2000 ASU ranks second in Academic All-Americans produced. From 2001-2014, Boyd says his job entailed not only academic support for student-athletes, but also oversight in "life skill development." Boyd: "There is an entirely separate but integrated area called life skill development, which is surrounding decision making, drug and alcohol education, and awareness, sexual responsibility, managing effective relationships, career transition and other types of life skill development. ... My energy is towards a holistic, systematic program that pushes student-athletes to achieve at their highest level in every area of life. Not just academics, not just life skills, but how to empower athletic trainers, academic cultures, sport cultures and counselors all to pour into these student-athlete lives that help them to be high achievers for the rest of their lives." Full profile. (link)
Also Noticed: Tweet from DetroitNews.com's Paul, "Central Michigan is hiring national search firm for its new athletic director. Went outside the family with last hire, and that worked out." (link); North Carolina has still not responded to the NCAA's latest NOA as it is "awaiting guidance from the committee on infractions on a new schedule." (link); NCAA Director of Media Coordination/Statistics Worlock: "The 2017 #FirstFour concludes with the lowest total scoring margin in its 7-year history. The 4 games were decided by a total of 16 points." (link); The Duke-Notre Dame ACC MBB Tourney champ game "drew nearly 3.7 million viewers over TV and streaming — the most-watched ACC tourney game since 1998." (link); Check out every MBB Final Four logo since 1979. Neat. (link); Old Hat has a new podcast, "Stop the Clock." (link); Looks like notable sexual assault spokeswoman Tracy talked with West Virginia FB yesterday. (link); Important note for many markets as Sinclair "is close to buying" the Tribune Company's 42 local TV stations.
